Shame the team didn't make a deeper run in the tournament. The increased exposure would likely have helped Pike's recruiting, which while controversial, I suspect a fair number of fans would like to see upgraded. He does not strike me as a shark...more of a long-term relationship builder, which is commendable, but I fear may not translate well recruiting the "free agency" portal going forward. We'll see.
NJHawk provided an analysis a while back, illustrating that most B1G teams have a 3 star base. Perhaps I'd feel better if our recent 3 stars were also coveted by other P6 programs. Perhaps Schiano has distorted my expectations. Regardless, I believe Pike will eventually need to move the program beyond the claimed developmental identity. Speaking of recruit rankings, I was looking at Seton Hall's recent haul:
2021 TRANSFERS
Jamir Harris: AMERICAN | CG | 6-2 | 200
RK | NATL: 294 | CG: 15 | NJ: 10
SR | PTS: 20.5 | 2P% .528 | 3P% .438
Kadary Richmond: SYRACUSE | SF | 6-5 | 180
RK | NATL: 88 | SF: 18 | NH: 4
FR | PTS: 6.3 | 2P% .475 | 3P% .333
Alexis Yetna: USF | PF | 6-8 | 235
RK | NATL: 325 | PF: 82 | FR: 6
JR | PTS: 11.4 | TRB 8.9 | 2P% .593 | 3P% .346
2021 RECRUIT
Jaquan Harris: HS | CG | 6-3 | 180
RK | NATL: 140 | CG: 23 | NJ: 7
And, they all shoot free throws well! Different circumstances and not all plug-n-play of course, but definitely the level of talent needed to help maintain critical momentum at RU. They should help continue Seton Hall's trend line though:
- NCAA's 4 of the least 6 years, not including 2019/20, though likely would have been selected.
- Ranked 4 of the last 6 seasons.
With our conference affiliation, established coaching staff, recent success, and facility upgrades, I think Seton Hall's past 6 years are something that the basketball program should aspire to achieve going forward.
Why not rewind to SHUs recruiting the last 2 to 3 years before this class....it has transfers that were highly regarded at the time they committed and most if not all flamed out. There's a reason they didn't make the NCAAs this past season and by most metrics RU has caught or is considered slightly ahead of SHU after this past seasons results.
I think the teeth knashing, worry warts are going to complain, but you have to show results on the court for me to translate recruiting as a direct relationship to results. Lots of teams across the country recruit well, very few match the rankings with results on the court.
RU hit the NCAAs and made the dance and won a game, which is still a big deal....we had a goal to make the Dance and complete the rebuild. The next phase involves how do you sustain this and develop with 3 and 4 year players.
The scary part is what every program in the country goes through....playing unknown and unproven players and watching them play through mistakes AND having those mistakes potentially become the difference between 4 to 8 points per game.
The portal is the piece that should give more experience for every program to make sure any unproven players, don't get an unlimited amount of rope and cost you games.
An example is there is no way Eugene Omoyuri is the player he is today, if he is not allowed to stumble, travel and make the amount of mistakes he made, if RU wasn't investing in him, during a full rebuild.
Is Mawot Mag, Eugene 2.0....?? Is he a player much further along as a frosh than where Eugene was....can his path to being in the rotation happen between April and November?? If so, RU has a huge amount of confidence that one of it's developmental players solves a problem.
RU needs 3 rotational players to be recruited between now and the start of the 2022-23 season and 2 of the 3 need to be developed or recruited between today and the start of next season.
