The 2020 U.S. Census is supposed to be taken next month. Since most of the students will be gone, Starkville and Oktibbeha County will be badly undercounted. This court hurt for the next 10 years since a great deal of federal funding is based on the census count.

I am guessing they'll push that back similar to the tax deadlines. Hopefully to the fall cause the summer won't be much better.

Most all students use their parents address anyway on the census. If they didn’t, you’d have 40,000+ Starkville residents over the past 2 or 3 census polls. I think the census also allows the parents to claim whatever dependents they have in their household as residents of said house on the census, even if they are off at school. In those cases, the duplicate reports by the students themselves are omitted.

I did mine online when I got it on March 12. I suspect the vast, vast majority of people will respond online. If not, they'll get a paper form to submit.

And if they don't send that in, they'll get a visit from a census worker. The visiting part is what I find worrisome, given that it means personal contact during the virus period.

This article explains how college students are counted in the census, even if their school is closed: https://www.monroenews.com/news/20200316/census-explains-how-to-count-college-students

It essentially says that college students are counted in their college town. If Starkville's population is 25,000 and there are 22,000 students, does that mean that Starkville's "real" permanent population is only 3,000? I don't think so.
