2018 & 2019 recruiting classes, something to think about

James Franklin signed 25 in his first transitional class & 25 in his first full cycle for a total of 50.

Urban Meyer signed 25 in his first transitional class & 24 in his first full cycle for a total of 49.

Jim Harbaugh signed 14 in his first transitional class & 29 in his first full cycle for a total of 43.

We have 18 guaranteed available (all senior scholarships) for the 2018 class, not including the +3 allowed by the B1G. As of today, we have 19 scholarship juniors.

Assuming Frost is the next coach, how many do you think he'll sign in 2018 & 2019?

Plus a QB and a WR to test the draft.
Plus regular attrition.

Push this as far as possible and continue to manage the roster.

If some of the players hinting at leaving actually leave I could see him taking 25. Pure guess at this time.

This will be interesting. While he has two recruiting classes, the other two classes plus redshirt seniors were not his recruits. So we really don’t know much about his recruiting ability though he has shown he can coach up inherited talent.

So who you hearing? Spielman and Stanley are the only two I've seen mention it but I would think Spielman would stay since he's already redshirted. I doubt we see much turnover of potential contributors. Where would Miles fit in his offense though? No fullbacks right. He would either have to be a TE or maybe Blount style RB but he can't have Blount's speed. There will be some that leave as there is every year. Stanley? Whatever. As long as Spielman, McQuitty and Lindsey stay we're ok until he can recruit more. IF you take 25/year you can flip a roster pretty fast.

Hopefully 18+ then as many as we can take the next year. Cant keep putting ourselves on self imposed probation taking too few recruits every year.

I think all those WR will be back. They are all in line to get a lot of touches and no one is going to sit on the bech a year, when they could be producing. As for Stan, I just didn’t see him being a high enough draft pick to justify leaving. Plus, if Walters gets the Rice or UCF jobs, KW could be back.

This would be the year to be careful on who you take. Don't fill this one just to get bodies. Make sure they're players then try to take a full class of big time recruits next year would be my take.

Hope we can add Keyshawn to that list of players staying.

Are we in on any WRs, who are a Husker lean, depending on coach Williams status?

Josh Moore is a must keep WR commit IMO. We were in on some other guys who obviously are in limbo with the coaching changes and probably going elsewhere. No doubt Frost will probably have some kids that he's been recruiting for UCF that we would like. We'll see. Folks on RSS might have a better idea on what recruits we're in trouble with because of the coaching change.

Good point, let me point out with UCF...
  • 10 of 22 on offense 2-deep signed by Frost
  • 17 of 22 on defense 2-deep signed by Frost
  • 17 of 44 combined

At Nebraska he'll have...
  • 18 of 22 on defense returning + additional experience (Gifford, brain freeze etc)
  • 17 of 24 on offense returning + additional experience (Farmer, Decker, etc)
  • 35 of 46 combined return. That's a large number, minus attrition but add in those not listed due to injury but started and/or got enough action...
Source is same, change teams in drop down.

Try to get difference makers for this class but don't fill slots just to fill numbers. After LOI pound the JUCO ranks much harder then Riley.

It all depends on who his retained from the 2017 staff to assist on the evaluations. Also, who wants a fresh start elsewhere. That question is too tough without knowing those 2 items.

Can't take guys just to take them but also gotta make sure it's a full class but I believe they'll be fine. For sure, gotta sign the minimum of 21 (18 guaranteed plus the BIG +3 allowed) because that's the number in front of you. Bad answer, I know, but it's where I'm at.

Me, the fan, I push the number to at least 27 if needed

Sucks with Ben Miles. I had high hopes for him. One guy mentions him not one person touched it. There’s got to be away Frost (whomever) to keep Miles and use this kid. He could be a beast but how to use him? I’m with most, I bet all the WRs stay (even Speilman). The way it’s looking KJJ will be coming back. I know he’s like Riley here but he’s fallen in love with the Huskers and he bleeds Huskers now. I think that’s why Senior is coming around. We all know Josh Moore checked out Bama but looks like he’s staying with us. Like KJJ, he loves the Huskers now and knows he’s got a huge opportunity ahead of him hear. I haven’t heard a word about Cam Brown since the Riley deal. I am going out on limb and guessing we keep both. Moore 100% sure and pure guess on Cam Brown.

I am not sure how many he will sign but heard through someone today that the "next coach" wanted the total roster to be 140 again. Not sure if that is true just what I heard. I am hoping that all of the scholarships are used for the first time in a long time.

So 8 or 9 more than current. In January a 10th assistant is allowed that should help.

Good gravy 140? How the heck do you manage 140 and can you find 15 or more quality walk ons every year to keep it at that number as they wash out.

We all have read the stories about Bo leaving the cupboard empty for a couple positions. I think Riley helped fix that issue... but a couple positions had a rough couple years with players leaving, not qualifying, or decommitting late (WR, DB) so... here goes.

Scholarship Distribution Chart

Freshmen: 17 (17)
RS Freshmen: 15 (32)
Sophomores: 16 (48)
Juniors: 19 (67)
Seniors: 16 (83)

Returning scholarship players:
QB: 3 (Includes Lee)
IB: 4
FB: 1
WR: 6 (includes Darlington and Coach Dub's son)
TE: 5
OL: 15 (Does Chris Walker stay on O or move to D?)
DL: 9 (These numbers are skewed as some OLB and DEs have switched)
LB: 14 (Again, some OLB moved from DE and vice versa)
CB: 4 (Stovall will probably play going forward, might get a scholly for SR year?)
S: 5
ST: 2

From looking at the numbers, I think we are short in a few positions. You should at least have 3 players deep at almost every position... right?
(Some positions can have a player play multiple positions to help out, such as OL, DL... for example: we don't really need 3 DTs at each position in a 4-3 do we? Or we could have a player like Freedom slide in to DT in a pinch.)

We need to push hard to get a few WRs in this class and the next, especially if Frost likes to run 4 WRs at times. (I don't have a clue if he does or not...) If you have two get injured, you are down to only 4 (excluding true freshmen, but includes Darlington). We need at least 3 WRs in this 2018 class.

DB looks like it needs a big boost in numbers as well. 9 returning players for 8-10 positions (4 DBs for base defense and 5 for nickel defense). No 3 deep! We need at least 4 DBs in this 2018 class. Does LJ stay?

Here is what I would take in each class (2018, 2019):
QB: 1, 1
IB: 1, 1
FB: 0, 0 (Current UCF depth chart doesn't show a FB)
WR: 5, 3 (For sure 5 if no KJJ)
TE: 0, 2
OL: 2, 4
DL: 4, 3 (We gotta get better on DL overall) (Not separating DE and DT due to unknown of 3-4 or 4-3)
LB: 2, 3 (Not sure if we will run a 3-4 or 4-3)
CB: 3, 3
S: 3, 2
ST: 1, 0 (A kicker for 2018)

2018: 22 (89)
2019: 22 (92)

We will lose at least 2 players from the current roster with the coaching transition... right?
Can we really end up pushing out up to 7 players by the fall of 2019? Who knows...:)

Recruit more than you need because something always happens to lose players. I am tired of being on the short side of 85!

I don't understand why we only have 18 available when other teams always seem to have more than us, especially teams in the SEC. What am I missing here?

Forced attrition. At the end of the season you bring in the bust 4 star kids and say, "son, you've got a lot of talent and would probably start for a lot of teams, but you're never going to play for us. You should look around for a place without 4 guys ahead of you on the depth chart". They don't necessarily have to say they aren't renewing his scholarship but I imagine some do. If you recruit highly ranked kids who want to play in the NFL and they see themselves buried on the depth chart, some of them are going to look around even without the talk.

I think it could be a fairly large class, I think we see 8 to 10 players move on. If this happens
we will take a fair # of Juco & grad transfers to fill gaps. We need a couple of wide outs, OT,
QB, OLB, pass rusher DE, ILB with size, 2 DBs for depth.

This will enable us to take a class of around 20 high school players. There will be some forced
attrition, with the new staff they will figure it out. 18 seniors, 8 players leave, + 3 over the limit
gets u 29 available ships. By fall camp we will be at 85 scholarships, no more self imposed
probation.

Additional competition for starting spots will get the slackers going or benched, something
we have not seen in a long time. I think Frosty with a strong staff can get his culture in place
by fall camp. Exciting times r coming, competent coaching, player development, strong schemes
on both sides of the ball, simpler to execute & strong support from the administration.

The zone read scheme will really highlight our best players, Morgan, Spielman, Lindsey, McQuitty
split wide with single coverage. I hope Gebbia will be the man at QB, has the potential to be be
big play, dynamic offense.

Defense, it’s of work to be done at all three levels. I really like Stille & Miller as pass rushers, Stille
could be strong side OLB that can help the D & set the edge. A lot of young guys got some valuable
experience, lots of work after so many debacles.
