I found my old 2017 rankings. Well, this looks pretty awful. It wasn't much of a class in the first place, and with the new offensive scheme, it's pretty much a disaster. Jaimes looks like the top contributor so far. No DBs or LBs left. My own rankings weren't that great either (I just do it for fun), but it turns out there wasn't much to go on.

1. Gebbia - May have salvaged this class for Riley, but he's gone now. Still think he'll be a great college QB, but not at NU.
2. McQuitty - Injuries set him back. Thought he was the next Stanley Morgan. Buried on the depth chart.
3. D Thomas - Showed some promise his freshman year, redshirted last year with some injuries.
4. Hampton - Left program, went JUCO.
5. Blades - Never made the grades to enroll at NU. JUCO stud. Will star for Jimbo at A&M. Most talented CB we've recruited to NU in years. Big loss.
6. Roberts - Bigtime recruit, smalltime effort. Transferred to try to play for Trent Bray at Oregon State.
7. Jaimes - Looks like he may be the top recruit in this class. Good LT. Started as a true freshman.
8. Lindsey - Left for the beavers. Was being outplayed by walk-ons.
9. Allen - Contributor as backup TE.
10. Sichterman - Backup OL. Still promising but needs to develop.
11. Miles - New offense left him positionless. Transferred to A&M. Good luck to him. Looked like a good FB.
12. G Thomas - Gave it a go but didn't contribute much. Transferred.
13. Watts - Never made it. Grades.
14. Keyshawn Jr. - Puff and gone.
15. Rafdal - Contributor as backup TE.
16. Ward - Never contributed. Tranferred.
17. Daniels - Backup NG. Promising prospect.
18. Walker - Moved from OL to DL. Haven't heard anything about him since.
19. Bradley - Got buried on the depth chart at running back. Big opportunity for him next season, but hasn't yet shown much.
20. Bando - Backup OL. Still has a chance to develop but needs to make a push.

Early for the OL and DL. The WR and LB attrition hurts. Wasn't Grimm in this class as well?

Would be really nice for Bradley to break out next season. Really liked his HS film and bits of what he showed freshman year. Seems like one of the most balanced backs we have returning in terms of being able to run tough but also having good speed.

I like Deontre Thomas quite a bit and I'm glad he got to RS. I loved his pad level and how hard he was to move in his HS film, think he's going to be a nice rotational player next year with the Davis and Daniels bros, then he can have a shot to start as a junior, which is ideal. You want to be starting upperclassmen in the trenches, not true sophs if you can help it.

Rafdal is a nice player and IMO he and Stoll are in for a really solid year next year. They will be needed with the seeming void at WR. It's JD and ???

NU has had recruiting classes that on paper should have produced competitive teams. But the classes have consistently under performed relative to their ranking.

Fans HAVE to keep this in mind going forward. Having such a poor class means our depth will really hurt in 2020 and 2021...and we could easily take a step backward. Hopefully fans have enough intelligence to understand that recruiting 3 years past matters... and not just the recent crop. I could see us win 10 games this year and then inexplicable only win 7 or so in 2020, especially with a few injuries. Those that think we will be in BCS bowls with the 2017 class being juniors and seniors are living in a fantasy world.

That's a poor excuse. With Martinez and Washington being juniors and Spielman potentially still around and a weak schedule 2020 should be a breakout year for us. You can make excuses for every little thing but at the end of the day, results are all that matter.

There's still some very good players in that class. Hated to lose Gebbia. He probably would have won a game at least for us this past year when AM got hurt. The killer was the complete absence of DBs.

This explains a lot of the reason the staff has been hot on JUCO players and grad transfers. The shortcomings in player development/motivation/retention have shot a big hole through the depth, especially for upperclassmen.

They have to not only try to recruit a current class but also make up for the lack of past classes staying on campus.

Two coaching staffs were at opposite extremes of being insane and then being so lax that players don't really know wtf to do with a staff that doesn't scream and throw fits but expects them to actually work hard and makes playing time decisions accordingly. A lot of guys quit when they found out they couldn't eff around and take a free ride any more.

I think it makes the biggest difference on the offensive and defensive lines. That's where you need players with 3+ years of experience in your program.

Frost has signed the following skill players in his first two classes:

Martinez
McAfferey
Washington
Miles Jones
Rahmir Johnson
Wandale Robinson
Thompkins
Jeremy Nance

And potentially going to add two more 4 Star receivers.

My point is this: I think Frost will continually bring in impact Freshmen who can produce at high level from day one.

But the inability to recruit the linebacker position will definitely hurt going forward.

Like the end of the Colorado and start against Akron games, which in honesty keeped Nebraska from making the Pinstrip bowl..

If you re-order by rivals rankings, 6 of the top 7 rated recruits from this class are gone. McQuitty being the only one still here.

Any time you completely change systems on both sides of the ball, it is a good bet that highly ranked kids who don't fit those systems well are going to leave. It IS one of the problems of coaching staff turnover and one of the reasons Osborne lobbied Bo to keep Watson as his OC.
