Did I understand correctly, we gave Croom a 10 Year contract?

How much cash did we receive from Mullens?

Croom did not have a 10 year contract. 4 years is the maximum allowed by state law.

There's no such thing as a "10 year contract" for coaches at public IsHL in Mississippi. The max is 4. State law.

No. The earlier post to which I think you are referring said something along the lines of "Templeton was determined to give Croom 10 years". No, if I remember correctly he was given a 4 year contract. The way I read the post was that had it not been for Doc getting rid of him, Templeton would have stuck with the Croom experiment, which failed miserably.

This. Croom was quite bitter about being let go and claimed that Templeton had pledged to him when he took the job that he would have 10 years to build the program the "right way". Apparently Croom was not going to be able to work on the offense until the last 5 years.***

This helps explain that outright lie Croom told on 30 for 30 about his offensive coordinator leaving, which we all know it was defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson that left. Johnson's defense was the only reason we won 7 games in 07 because Croom wouldn't separate himself from McCorvey. If Croom had of gotten anywhere near a legit OC, things MAY have been different, but I doubt it.

LOL, that's as good as anything I could come up with. My bet is that he'd still have McCorvey and would still be recruiting Omar Conner-like players for QB.

I don't know how we've had this persistent myth that Woody McCorvey was coordinating MSU's offense during the Croom years. That was 100% Croom's offense and he used McCorvey as a meat shield to take the heat for it's failure to operate. I spoke several years ago to a gentleman who had played at Clemson during the Danny Ford years and was friends with McCorvey, and he told me about calling Woody once after some terrible game and saying "Woody, I know you're a better coach than the offense yall are putting out there", and Woody's answer was "I run what I am allowed to run".

Don't take heat that belongs to Croom and give it to McCorvey. It was all Croom's fault.

I can't speak for everyone else, but for me it was the fact that Woody McCorvey held the title of Offensive Coordinator, but then again, Les Koenning also held that title, and we know damn well he didn't call any plays.
I also don't doubt a word you are saying, but if McCorvey were worth even half a **** he could have gone somewhere else and had a much better chance to succeed

I heard this as well from a different source. I heard from an MSU guy; third hand, mind you, so take it with a grain of salt.
According to a friend of a friend, McCorvey even said that this offense would never work, but he was told exactly what to do by Croom.

Ok on Croom, so no one in the MSU Administration accountable for NOT having a cash buyout with Mullins on his departure?

My recollection on Crooms was that Templeton promised him 5 years after our probation ended to get the team set up his way. We had not yet received our penalty when that promise was made. We wound up getting 5 years of probation, but only 2 years of penalties, so I was never clear if Templeton's "promise" would add up to 7 years or 10 years. Either way, State law would not allow for that kind of contract to be written up, or be considered enforceable, so all Croom had was Templeton's assurances.

As for McCorvey, hiring him set off all kinds of warning bells in my head. Croom was dedicated to running the West Coast Offense - I wasn't thrilled about that but I was willing to see if it could work. Then he went and hired McCorvey, who had never run the West Coast Offense before. Croom was supposed to be teaching it to him but that doesn't seem like the best way to utilize an Offensive Coordinator.

It's just another negotiating point --- a huge buyout if you fire him, but low buyout if he wants to leave.

Jimbo Fisher has something like a $60-$70 million buyout if he's fired by A&M, but a $0 buyout if he wants to leave. I have no idea what Mullen's was but I'd assume they negotiated to keep it low, as much as he liked looking around for other jobs.

And yet last fall didn't I watch Templeton be inducted into MSU athletic hall of fame, on 50 yard line of Scott field? Am I alone in thinking he was last person on earth that deserved it?

That 5 year deal is a red herring. Anytime you get put on probation there is always a 5 year window where they may monitor you more closely and you are in jeopardy of repeat offender status if you get in trouble again but you aren't really on probation except for whatever comes with the penalties.

That 5 years doesn't start running until your probation is over. So, we got two years of penalties (bowl ban and reduction of scholarships), but five years total probation (although I just looked it up and an old ESPN article said 4 years probation). The repeat offender window is for 5 years after the probation is over, so that would be a total of 10 years (or 9, if ESPN was accurate). I'm not sure what else happens during the part of the probation status that does not have any penalties attached, but I imagine if you are caught cheating again during that time then it would not be good.
