Okay? What is your point?

I stated that there is a difference between 8 classifications and waiting for A/AA split for just playoffs. Did you not understand that? Do you want me to explain it more in-depth for you?
So is the split at end of season not better bc it can be changed every season? You said schools with the split had to play 200 against 500 student schools! My point is that wasnt true.

The biggest difference is when they had 1a-4a and the split a-aa classes is when the state did the original classifications the charters were not included. After the classes 1a-4a were decided the charters were then loaded in, with most of them being 1a. So the overall breakdown was not 25/25/25/25. 1a had more schools than any classification but a large number of those did not have football, mostly the charters.

Geez. That was an example.

The split before the season is more "fair". For argument sake, let's say schools have between 1 and 1000 students. If you split them up just for playoffs, that means that you would have classifications from 1-250, 251-500, 501-750, 751-1000. All the schools that are in 1-250 will have to fight for playoffs. This would NORMALLY give the advantage to the schools that have 250 kids. The less kids you have, the less you have to choose from, the less play football, so you are NORMALLY at a disadvantage. Now if you split it up before the season starts, you now have 1-125, 126-250, 251-350, etc.

If you cannot understand that, I can't help you.

I think Northside will match up with Robbinsville the best but can they get by those three charters?
They'll smoke Bear Grass by 40+. I think KIPP beats Wilson Prep and meets Northside for the East title. Will definitely be a tough away game for Northside! Either way the East has some competition for the West this year in 1A!

Last night in the 2A soccer playoffs, Eno River Academy played at Hayesville. Google says that's a five-hour drive and it was on a school night. The NCHSAA really needs to look at this.

Trips like that have been happening for years. It is the nature of the beast for small schools, many of which are located in the extreme edges of the state. Hayesville probably owns the record trip for a 1st round game, 400 miles.

The state at one time went to a "pod" system where travel was greatly reduced . However the schools protested the fact they played the schools they played in the regular season.

Was that a game played on a weeknight? Games played on a Friday or Saturday at least mean no school the next day. The association could deal with this issue by at least advising schools that players should be excused until lunch the next day for such long trips.

The association isn't going to get involved in schools excusing a student athlete on missing classes.

Student athletes, teachers, admin all know how long the trips are and how long the games normally last. As a student athlete its up to you to be responsible enough to work with your teachers on anything missed. Back in the day, I missed class on either having to leave early or games that were on school night and coming in late, but don't remember being penalized. I believe we just had to make up any missed work.

Also, its been a while but what's the difference between "excused" and "unexcused"? Sadly I do have a kid in school, but don't really understand as policies just say "X number of days missed". If I want to take my kid out or needs to miss a day, I personally don't care what anyone at the school or school system has to say or document it as, so maybe that's why I don't know the difference, as it makes no difference to me.

These kids are in high school and obviously play sports. If they can't be responsible enough to make up missed work, they shouldn't be on the team. Not to mention, this isn't a every night thing.

First, I think the part I put in bold is right. It should be up to you to take your kid out of school as you see fit and the school should honor that, but some systems won't. But let's clarify something about what's going on here. Brackets were released Saturday with the first game on Tuesday. So that gave families two days to try to work all this out. And this is largely on the association for how it plans the playoff rounds and the release dates for the brackets. Some parents might not be able to get in touch with their boss until Monday to ask for the next day off so they can drive halfway across the state to see if their kid can get home at a reasonable hour or otherwise taken care of. And then we get into safety regarding who is going to drive the bus all that way and back. I don't think it's practical and I don't think it's safe-the missed schoolwork is the least of it. i believe the law says that workers are supposed to get eight hours of rest after a shift, so I'd say the same thing is appropriate for kids after a long road trip. But if it was my kid, I'd probably try to book a hotel near the playoff game and keep him out of school the next day. Some parents might not be able to do that and the association might at least make it policy that for a trip of (however many miles) teams are to get a hotel for the night with the NCHSAA reimbursing the school for the expense. They can take it out of the $40 million they had in the endowment fund.

Not sure how all the playoffs work, but I know with football, schools do get reimbursed for travel during playoffs if it is a certain distance. Also, when I played, when it was far and we left early for games, we had a charter bus with a paid driver. Getting hotels for a team is a logistical nightmare, and in todays time, I would not want to be in charge of staying the night somewhere with 20+ kids and only a handful of couches. Not to mention, those coaches probably either teach or have other jobs so staying the night isn't reasonable.
