Texas didn't kill the SW conference, SMU did with all the scandalous ****. Texas and Texas A&M encouraged Arkansas to leave the SWC to destabilize it because the politicians in Texas would never let the two big boys break up the band carrying the **** eaters (Rice, SMU, TCU, Houston, Tech, and Baylor..) Ann Richards (Gov and Baylor Alum) and Bob Bullock (Lt Gov and Texas Tech Alum) shoved Tech and Baylor into the mix. Bullock apparently told A&M and UT he would cut off every dime to both if they didn't.
Originally it was going to be the Big 8 + Texas and AtM. Thick as thieves they were back then. Richards apparently saved Baylor in the 11th hour as the new big 12 was really wanting BYU instead ( a good natural rival to Colorado and national fanbase.)
The big 12 fell apart because of the Longhorn network, but also because the Aggies lost their mind when Texas won the title in 05'. They actually are the jealous little brother. Don't get me wrong, Deloss Dodds was an A-1 prick, but he was AD from 81-2013. They finally had enough in 2011 when the Longhorn Network came along supposedly... But the reality was it was horrible before that and I believe the Aggies were looking for a way out.
The longhorn fans were shoving it in the aggies face ever chance they got. I worked in an office with mostly Aggies and a few Longhorns and it was pretty funny. Imagine if Ole Miss had won a title in the Croom years, how horrible that would be. The Aggies were horrible under Franchionne and Sherman while Texas was really good.
I guess I am defending the Longhorns by proxy, but the Aggies get a free pass for some reason from SEC fans. They're as ****** as anyone. Look at those idiots.
The milkmen are their cheerleaders.
The "corps of cadets" military school BS (for those who don't know, only like 30% of the Corps of Cadets actually take a commission in the military. The rest are phonies.) The military should not give them special treatment and funding. Just do the RITC thing like everyone else. The few officers I met from A&M were just using the military as a resume filler, but they act like it's a service academy. Even make up a quote from Patton about Aggie officers being better.
Their motto of "Aggies don't lie, cheat or steal. Not tolerate those who do."... Stolen from West Point.

All this is so awful & lame if this happens. I don’t want either & I hope, with our one vote, we say No. All this is just going to create a mad scramble from other conferences too to boost them. No way other conferences will stand for this.
I will never forget how awful the Texas fans were at the Cotton Bowl. I will say that Texas can forget winning a natty in football if they join for a considerable while. Way less cupcake schedule when most the SEC teams are up & competitive.

That is pre NIL. Texas has enough CEO alums to give deals to every member of every team if they want.
Texas may have a top level team every 8 to 10 years but they have so many factions of money within the money all trying to be in charge that they will never be anything near what someone like Alabama is. Bama organized all their money.
I have a very good friend who is an ex player from the yesteryear who has told me this is their big downfall and he's kind of pissed about it. He was a player for UT and the NFL for a little while and it's just high enough within the money boys to know what he's talking about. I told him I thought that sounded incredibly stupid and he said yes but we're talking about too many groups with too many hands in the pot and they all want to stir the ladel.

We're fortunate to be part of the SEC. Do not bite the hand that feeds. The only time you vote no is if 11 or so are voting no and that ain't happening knowing the trajectory of college football over the next 10-20 years. I'd rather be part of it than get left out and have to join the AAC with Memphis and directional Florida.

Anyone who is against this and does not see how this helps MSU is missing the big picture.
Exactly. We don't win the national championship without SEC money. We don't have the facilities we do without being in the SEC. We couldn't pay coaches what we can now without that money and exposure.

You can't compare our situation to the Alabama, LSU, and A&M's of the world. Look around at all the other athletic departments of schools who aren't in the SEC. To everyone on the outside looking in, we are counted among the "haves", and that's solely because of our membership in the best conference in the country. We need to grab those coattails and never let go.

I don't have any problems with is. Texas WILL NOT come into the SEC and rule the roost. They might have been able to do that in the BIG12, but it won't happen in the SEC.
They know that, but it benefits the SEC and both Universities for this to happen. More money for each school is a good thing, and will continue the forward development of Starkville and the University. If you're worried about more competition in football.... don't. We can't win the SEC as it is now anyway.

I really don't know how I feel about this. Will it help MSU or hurt? One thing that worries me is, if TX and OK join the SEC how long do you think it will be before there is a move to remove MSU, Ole miss, or both because we don't bring enough viewership and money? By TX's track record, they are certainly not above trying it.
We get more money. Everyone else gets the same amount of more money. We then look around and see we are well below everyone else yet again.
That money then gets spent on coaching contracts and facilities to just try and keep up with everyone else who has that very same money plus more.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
Vandy, OM, MSU, Mizzou, SC- dominant programs need partners they think they can beat up on.
No natty without SEC money? That’s complete BS. We’ve had a baseball program capable of winning a natty in any given year for the better part of 3 decades. Coastal Carolina and Fresno State don’t get any SEC money the last time I checked.
Yep. They need us for near guaranteed W's, kind of sad to say. If any one of us jumps up and "gets out of our place", then you might see that change.
The analogy I always use is this: would you rather own the smallest nice house on the rich, fancy side of town, or the biggest house in the ****** section of town?
Fans crying about how bad this is for Mississippi State are pussies. Even more money and exposure for us. And more opportunity for us. It will elevate the league money-wise and perception wise, while adding an opponent that we will have a chance to have some success against. Texas isn't going to come in here and dominate the SEC. They couldn't even dominate the Big 12 when they were essentially the biggest show in town with the most resources.

We don't have any leverage. We need the welfare check we get every year. We don't really offer anything to the SEC, but we need them.
You don't have to make absurd statements in this thread.....it's not about covid/masks/vaccines, etc. It's about actual sports, so you are encouraged to drop the schtick and provide more reasonable takes.
They say membership has its privileges. Well, charter membership has even more privileges. They're never getting rid of us.
Not true. That's just an Internet legend. I'm certainly not worried about the SEC ever getting rid of us. IF we ever get left out, it would be because the conferences become irrelevant and the big schools move on to something bigger and we're left in the depleted SEC. And I'm really not losing sleep over that either.

Last time I checked we've been in the SEC the whole time our baseball program has been "capable" of winning. Do you think if we were not in the SEC that Mississippi State University, in Starkville, MS, would have the same Dudy Noble we do now? Would we have the same fan support if our big weekend games were La Tech, UAB, Memphis, instead of LSU, Auburn, Vandy? Would Cohen have been able to go pluck Indiana's head coach if we didn't have said stadium and fans?
If you don't think being in the SEC helps us in many ways, I don't know what to tell you. Your only good argument is the Coastal Carolina and Fresno State outliers, but I would say that Fresno and Myrtle Beach are easier to recruit to than Starkville (without the SEC angle) would be. But okay - anyone can win a baseball title, maybe that's true. This is a big fear of mine honestly. We’re already breaking one precedent and “gentlemen’s agreement” by ignoring TAMU’s “veto” to let UT in. What others will we break moving forward?
Letting UT and OU in is about the money. Kicking the lowest income producers out would be about the money. This could go like Michael Corleone said "It's not personal, it's just business."

Texas and OU coming to the SEC will only strengthen State’s platform to get to the next level— more money greater visibility always matter in recruiting players and coaches. Just true. I don’t worry at all about either Texas or OU trying to kick State or Ole Miss out. Why would they? No good reason. And moreover I disagree with those who think Texas will try to run the SEC. Will it look out for itself? Sure. As do all member schools. Does it think it can run SEC like it ran B12? It has no reason to believe it could. We need to take the W on this move and stop carping about it. Not sure it’ll happen but if it does it can only help State.
It is Keenum who will vote, not Cohen. The Chief Executive Officers are the President or Chancellor of each member school.
It takes a 3/4 majority to extend an invitation, but only a 2/3 majority to kick someone out. So 11 schools have to agree to let them in. Then when there are 16 members, 11 (or more likely 12) of the schools who want to trim the dead weight, could leave us sweating along with UMiss, Vandy, and I'm not sure who else.
I don't think we would get kicked out, but I think College sports will change drastically with moves like this combined with NIL and other financial streams being approved. I do fear us being left behind if the big money schools decide to form some new organization.
Agree. Ask yourselves this: will the SEC make it a penalty for players to flash the "horns down" sign like the Big 12 did? I don't see something like that happening, although it could be a penalty if done directly to taunt a UTx player.
And of course, the Longhorn Network will be over.
Another little trick UTx used to pull in the SWC, was they made member schools charge a premium for tickets when the Longhorns came to play, and that money went to Texas.
I'm sure Texas knows they will no longer call the shots, but it will be interesting to see what they try to pull.
I read it as meaning the SEC money that we’ve been receiving since the major SEC network deal kicked in for the 2012-2013 sports season. Before that, yes we got money from revenue sharing but it was nothing close to what we get now (nor was it head and shoulders above what we would have gotten in another major conference). And in the 80’s, when we first ascended to big boy status in baseball, the TV contracts were practically nonexistent as major revenue streams….and that is where all the shares money comes from (that and the bowl payouts).
Has the SEC money helped us? Absolutely. But its not the reason we have a baseball title.
