....Sylvester Croom took nine months of positivity and good will with him to Ruston, Louisiana, and we got to watch all of it evaporate in the span of three hours.

Who else was there??

One of the most miserable games I've ever attended. IIRC things were going OK until we muffed a punt and we lost all momentum.

I had repressed that memory, but thanks for bringing it back. I drove back from 52-0 in Gainesville, and I drove back from the South Carolina RAT touchdown pass, but that drive back from Ruston was the longest drive ever.

People always talk about the 3-2 game or the 45-0 Egg Bowl loss but the game in Ruston was the true beginning of the end. Squandered all the goodwill built up from 2007 and never really recovered from it.

Pegues was suspended and in his absence we lost two fumbles on returns. And then I seem remember Tyson Lee having a KJ Costello moment and sliding before the marker on third down when he could have easily gotten the first if he kept running.

It was an absolute comedy of errors. Or, in other words, a typical Sylvester Croom-coached game.

Last straw for me was South Carolina 2006. 3rd year coach, home opener against a mediocre team, and he lost 0-15 with 161 yards of total offense. I gave him every benefit of the doubt for 2 years plus 4 quarters, but it was over after that game.

I still have the stadium cup and drink from it frequently. It brings me fond memories, not of that night which was certainly frustrating, but that it really was the beginning of the end for Sly.

Total disaster. IIRC, Derek Sherrod had injured his foot and missed that game. That's after losing Mike Brown at the end of spring. So we went into that game starting what should have been two second string tackles. Wheels were set in motion 4 months before that game was played.

This is a great / miserable read, found it after googling the subject. https://www.forwhomthecowbelltolls....ssippi-state-louisiana-tech-game-SEC-football

I think that was Jamel Smith trying to catch the punt over his shoulder, LOL. And then Chaney broke his ankle at the end of the game. You could argue that his broken ankle was the best thing to come out of that game - have him redshirt and come back in 2009

Not to quibble, but I celebrate July 1, 2008, as the beginning of the end for crxxmz. Greg Byrne's first day on the job as AD.

I remember at the 2007 Arkansas game in LR fans yelling this and giving McAdams hell. Unbeknownst to any his mother was in our section and got up and left very upset.

That sucks when that happens. Almost opened my mouth at a tailgate with a player's parents there one day. Just a reminder to everyone, before you run down a player, make sure everyone you are talking to is not related to the player.
Small world.

I was there.. on the old SPS site in my stored images there were photos from that day. Their little red and blue wooden shed they used for will call.. the 1/3rd full stadium... the horror of the game...

If Derek Pegues had not been suspended we eek out a win because there's no way he would've fumbled 2 punts inside the 20. And if we don't lose that game I wonder if we fire Sylvester Croom for going 5-7 and barely missing a bowl.

Even with that loss we were two missed FGs from being 6-6 (Kentucky & Auburn). We didn't realize it at the time, but the dead injuns were working in our favor that entire year.

Yeah... if Pegues had gone to class during the summer and we hit just one of the FG's against Auburn/Kentucky then Croom 100% comes back in 2009.. even with the no-show we pulled in the Egg Bowl.

Pegues was playing 4D chess that summer. Glad it worked out.

I was there. If memory serves correct, there was a hurricane approaching and traffic was heavy with evacuees.

I was worried the win against Arkansas saved his job. But didn’t anticipate how bad the Egg would be.

I vividly remember sitting in a sports bar in Jackson, MS watching that game with a couple coworkers. It’s closed now, but it was the place that had TVs at every booth, and you could buy those 3-ft long tubes of beer with a tap at the bottom.

Anyway, my buddy Yuri who had spent all of about 18 months in the States up to that point knew nothing about American football, but I’ll never forget him looking at me right before halftime of that game and saying… Man, why do you cheer for this team? They really suck.

All I could do was nod and refill my glass. I have never felt as absolutely helpless about an MSU team as the ones we put on the field during the Croom era

I’ve told this story multiple times, I went to the ER after that game with heart palpitations. I have never been more angry after/during a football game before or since.

Alumni House? I watched Croominator beat Gardner-Webb like 31-14 in there too. Good times.

Pretty sure Byrne had made up his mind even before the Egg Bowl. There were rumors circulating in the stands about him being let go after the game before that game ever kicked off. Probably had a lot to do with how we played that night.

Watched it from future wife’s family place in Hot Springs. We had been dating a couple of years, but I had never let go like that. Since I was over there, I couldn’t throw nothing out of fear of breaking something. I managed to make complete sentences maybe even paragraphs using nothing but cuss words. Little did we know, things were about to get much worse, football wise.

I'll never forget my mom called me after the Arkansas win to celebrate it with me. She couldn't understand why I was pissed off. I tried to explain to her that that win saved Croom's job and that's why I was mad. I don't think she ever really understood.

I let loose that game too, one of my few public rants. I lost it on the Tyson Lee slide.

That whole year was just awful, watching Ole Miss beat Florida, 3-2, Alabama rising, my back surgery (since there is a thread on it). Talk about a whole fall of suck......until the Ninja did his thang.

Small world.

And, in my case, not the player himself! I've told this story on here before. After the UT game in '94 where we won on the last play of the game, I was in the Blue Parrott taking a leak. A guy comes in and strolls up to the other urinal and says "How did you like the game today?". I said "I thought it was great but Gumina almost 17ed it up! He should have fallen on the 17ing ball instead of trying to pick it up and run just before halftime!". The guy then says "Well, I thought I could score" at which point I cut it off mid-stream, looked him in the eyes, turned my head, raised my chin to give him a clear shot and said "Go ahead. I deserve it.". He just laughed and said "You're right. I got my *** chewed out on the sideline about that. But, have you seen our offense?" then he started laughing at which point I agreed with his reasoning.

The team was late arriving to the game because Croom was busy reading the paper…finally basically someone had to tell him, Coach we have to leave now if we want to make the kickoff.

Yes! I’m not sure what did that place in, but I always had a great time watching games there. Recliners, goalposts of beer, and decent food from what I remember

There's one over in Pearl now, but I haven't been there, don't know if they have the recliners and goal posts still.
