Per Howland. This would have him back for the last two OOC games against New Mexico State and Kent State.

Not exactly a surprise, but glad we are finally addressing it and laying out a timeframe after we didn’t do it with him last spring and haven’t officially done so for the football players involved either.

Going to be a different team this year. Seemed like Q was here forever and he carried us for at least 3 years (and some games his freshmen year), adjusting to life without him may be a challenge at first.

We’ll definitely need Tyson to step up for us, particularly in those 10 games. Perry and Woodard have star potential if they continue to develop.

If you asked me right now, I think we’re an NCAA team but closer to the bubble than we were last year. I think we could end up in the NIT again if one or two things don’t go our way, but I also think we have the potential to be one of the best teams in the SEC depending on how the chips fall.

The SEC will be stout again this year, definitely upgraded in coaching around the league in the offseason.

This may just be my pessimist side coming out, but while I think the dance can be within reach, there are just too many unknowns for me to see it this year.

What we fairly well know is that Perry will be our bell cow

Things we don’t know:

How will Tyson perform in Nick’s absence and over a full season of major minutes?

Will Woodard be able to take a big step?

Will Ado continue being Ado? i.e. serviceable, but nowhere near what you need to beat top teams

How will Nick acclimate after missing a full year?

What are the redshirts and other new guys gonna give us?

And last, if anything and I mean anything happens to Perry, we are 100% screwed

Hope I’m completely wrong, but I see us just missing the bubble and being a strong contender in the NIT this season

But they are chooseable correct? I see we have games vs Villanova and Kansas State on the NC Schedule. Do you play him vs those teams or do you just suspend him the first 10 games?

I can happily say that I have never likened this situation to Sidney. That wouldnt be in the top 50 events I would liken this to.

Development ain’t gonna happen under Ben and George. Have we hired some new coach that does that?***

If they ain’t already developed when they get here, don’t look for that to happen. This is a part time retirement job for Howland and Brooks.

Yep. Perry is the only elite talent we can count on. Woodard might be good. The rest are known entities. Hate to say it, but I just don’t see this team making the dance. Not enough elite talent. Hope I’m wrong and someone steps up.

If the depth is there, I think we can navigate the OOC schedule well enough w/o Nick & make a run once he returns. Perry is talented enough to be a game changer & take over games. Hopefully experience will play a factor & vintage Howland makes some appearances.

I said it 2 years ago and i will again: we will be a better team without q.

Makes perfect sense. Q's the only player we've had to sniff the NBA in 7+ years, a 2,000 point scorer and clearly the most complete player on the team for nearly all of his career, but we're definitely better off without him.

What record this year must we attain to prove you right in your mind?

If we are a better team, it will be due to the overall talent level having increased.
Each season's team is different from the last, so to compare as if its all even is absurd.

An easy way to gauge Q's value is to ask yourself what would have happened if Q werent on last season's team(or the prior teams too). We wouldnt have been a better team without Q.

Our whole administration, athletic department and academic department should be ashamed of what they allowed to happen at our university with this. 18-22 year old kids being tutored by 18-22 year old part time employee kids should NEVER have been allowed to be in a situation where they had the power to get our entire athletic department into hot water like they did. And I'm talking online classes with NO adult supervision EVEN when taking exams for the course. I've dealt with enough 18-22 year olds to know that if you are going to depend on them to always "do the right thing" you will be often disappointed. That is the whole reason when extra benefits are being passed out during recruiting its the booster that gets the university in trouble, not the student athlete. Most people that age are just not mature enough or responsible enough to be allowed to have that kind of autonomy where they could impact our entire athletic department with not only loss of eligibility but also probation. Where were the adults during all of this? SMH.

You're the one that needs to gt17o, seriously. I dont know who has a sweet spot for you, but you should have been shipped a long 17ing time ago.

I have my complaints with Howland, but he has done a good job. The road back from where we were under Rick Ray was always going to be a long one. We should’ve never lost to Liberty, and the games where he “forgot” to play Woodard (namely Ole Miss and LSU) were indefensible. But we had our best regular season since 2004 last year after not being in the tourney for a decade. So it’s hard to complain a ton about that.

I do have concerns that we’ll have a hard time maintaining that level. But for now, I’m content with where the program is. This year will tell us a lot about sustainability, though. Talents like Perry are hard to come by, the time to win is now while we still have him and several other 4 and 5 star guys.

Does your post to my response have anything to do with my response? What are your views on if Howland and Brooks are just part-timing it?

You could participate in the conversation instead of telling me you dislike me, but that would mean you would likely come up with another absurd comment like comparing Witherspoon's situation to Sidney.

Yep, the “rogue tutor” line has gotten plenty of eye rolls from me. This was a failure on the entire athletic department’s part

Good post, and that’s pretty much where I stand with him as well.

It feels like overall we’ve gotten some lukewarm results over the last 4 years, but his teams have shown consistent progress during that time, and even if recruiting has taken a bit of a dip, I’m anxious to see what he can do with some of the under the radar players.

If he guides us back to the dance this year with this group, I’ll feel a lot better

Yes, for a long time our recruiting had nowhere to "dip" to. Now, we can afford to be disappointed with the type of recruiting class from this last cycle (even though I believe there are some surprisingly well hidden gems there). 7 years ago, we would've thought we signed Michael Jordan if we signed this type of class.

Some of you discount, like you did Simmons in football, that replacing Q is gonna be REALLY tough. He brought a toughness, hard nosed defense and became a great finisher at the rim.

He will be missed and it will show at some point this season.

Sorry but not buying this. Q was a great scorer but If we funnel our offense through Perry now instead of relying on Q to do his thing we are probably going to have a more productive offense this year than we did last year. We didn't have much of a plan on offense last year. This year we do. Plus funneling the ball to Perry will free up Tyson and the other guards for more open 3's. Tyson can rake up points quickly especially when left open. We're also gonna be a tougher team physically this year too with Woodard in the starting lineup paired with Perry and Ado. We also add Prince the transfer who averaged close to a double double his freshman year at Sienna.

A key to this season offensively for MSU will be whether or not Reggie is able to pass the ball out of the post when double/triple teamed to open shooters on the perimeter & the open shooters hitting shots. Reggie will get a lot of attention from opposing defenses & I think that our guards will be forced to shoot defenses out of zones.
