I guess the LSU "Fighting Tigers" are next. Might as well get rid of "War Eagle"

while we're at it since they're both directly linked to the civil war era. And guess what? That still won't be enough. All that's bound to happen is alot of pissed off alums who are eventually going to say the hell with it and walk away for good.

LSU might (MIGHT) squeak by with Tigers since they never dressed an old Civil War-era man up in a costume and encouraged everyone to celebrate the confederacy.

Where does this stop? I honestly ask that. Pretty soon we won’t be able to have statues of anyone pre-Civil War. That includes our founding father.

And all of this is being pushed by people who think Stalin and Lenin are proper people for statues. Che is worthy of honoring on shirts? He hated blacks and killed homosexuals as do all communists! He would’ve killed or imprisoned 99% of the people who think he was a god.

Nice job combining a "slippery slope" with a "straw man."

Statues being taken down are of confederate heroes and Christopher Columbus. If someone goes after the founding fathers, we'll be on the same side in those cases.

Everyone to your left is not a communist. Everyone to your left does not worship Stalin and Lenin. These are insane ravings.

Yes, on a completely random and disconnected note, a few people think it's "cool" to wear Che shirts, and I'd bet 90% either don't know who he is or what he did (not that it excuses them, but it does not make them communists for wearing a shirt). Even if this were a significant number of people (it's not) and they were all communists (they're not) that's not who's making you so upset by calling for the removal of confederate statues.

Believe it or not, there are democrats, republicans, and independents, all who want to retire confederate monuments and symbols from places of honor. If you have to resort to calling everyone who disagrees with you a communist, do you really have an argument at all?

Thank God, Mississippi State’s founding fathers chose a house pet for a mascot. However, I am afraid Stephen D Lee is next.

Yea I saw an article the other day of a bunch of protesters (aka rioters) requesting for Joseph Stalin statues to be raised all over the nation.********

Not so fast!

Our mascot is a Bulldog. Where did some of the worst events of the Civil Rights protests play out? Birmingham, AL. Who was the infamous police chief at that time? Bull Connor. Thats' right, BULL Connor. Bulldog. Bull Connor. See the connection?

We better watch our ***.*

Just trust their process. If those batshit crazy hypocrites can find anything racist with a bulldog, they will.

it's not just places of honor (whatever that is), it's just places. oddly enough, it's places that everyone went and went by before without batting an eye. I never EVER heard of anyone refusing to go whatever park or whatever building because there was a statue of outside of it (that has now been deemed offensive). at this rate, I have no doubt that there will be some push to get civil war battlegrounds removed and the land used for something else. "yeah, but they only want....."

Is it though? Before right now, I have not heard a single thing about Stalin and Lenin statues being put up in this country. Is this some OAN reporting you are repeating, or is it just you making **** up?

A quick read on the A&M guy indicates that he treated blacks terribly. Move the statue to museum and preserve the history, don't display it on the public square as an honor. When the entire country was run by slave labor and around 50% of southerners owned slaves, it stands to reason that they would also be in power and found such institutions. It is an unfortunate history that does not have to define the future. A&M will continue to be a good school, albeit a weird one...without cheerleaders of all things...

Honestly the primary difference in the positions of us v. the Bears is that they founded every tradition, name, etc. on old south/slavery terms and connotations. How that has held on for so long is the real mystery.

As I said in another thread, Republicans create more communists than have ever existed in the US and Democrats manufacture racists at an alarming rate. So much intentional division and lies and all to maintain/get power and control. Sad and unfortunate.

Except that your list is incomplete.

You have Charles Linn in Birmingham (while he was an immigrant-turned-Confederate-naval-captain, the statue had nothing to do with nor any mention of that), The Conquistadors in New Mexico, Ponce de Leon in Miami, and Philip Schuyler in New York plus a number of minor local figures from the last 100 years being pulled or taken down.
Then you have stupid idiocy like the vandalizing of Mathias Baldwin, a George Washington statue defaced in Chicago, and whatever morons decided a statue of Queen Victoria in England needed the same treatment. I mean, seriously, the Queen on the throne when slavery was being forcibly wiped out.
Oh, and don't forget the ongoing movement to "de-person" Winston Churchill. Even the BBC seems to be supporting that.

It's really, really easy to trace from Jefferson Davis to Stonewall Jackson to Philip Schuyler and know that Thomas Jefferson, et al, are next. Note that some vandalism has already taken place in national parks and cemeteries, so this isn't just limited to public places in cities.

Perhaps worst of all is this argument seemingly personified today by Kellen Mond that it doesn't matter what you do later, it can't make up for earlier mistakes. Some of the men going down espoused feelings later (and sometimes earlier) in life that were in direct contradiction to what is being attributed to them.

Meanwhile, I'm curious how you personally justify Columbus but not the US founding fathers.

ETA: Somehow I missed a statue of Gandhi in Washington being vandalized, and calls to remove one in the UK that was just put up 5 years ago. Also, idiocy mentions extended to defacing statues of Abraham Lincoln and a memorial to the 54th Massachusetts

Not to mention his son was a little out in left field...but Stephen D Lee is known as the father of Industrial Education in the south and did a lot to mend the wounds and bring together both sides after the Civil War... he suffered a fatal aneurysm after giving a speech to former Union Soldiers in Vicksburg in 1908..

Yeah, we can be too quick to lump all of these things together. Banning "Gator Bait" is silly, but asking for the removal of a statue of someone apparently known as the "Negro killer" in his day doesn't seem unreasonable.

Is the statue honoring him as a confederate soldier? Does it even mention it? He was a Texas governor and former president of TX A&M. Heck, the majority of folks that fought in the confederate military never owned a slave in their life. Most were just fighting for their family and homeland. Sounds like the new rule is that no Southerner who lived during the time of the Civil War can ever be honored in any public place for any reason. Now I would agree that if the statue is honoring his service in the confederacy it should be removed.

So what's the difference in those ignorant of a Che shirt vs those ignorant to the offensiveness of Confederate symbols? Many of those think the flag is simply cool as well. Colin Kaepernick is being praised by most on the left for his bravery against racism and injustice yet look at some of the BS he wears. CASTRO??? I mean seriously???

I would say that the ignorance isn't good in either case, however, I would say that one is being ignorant to what took place in Cuba and South America and the other is being ignorant to what took place right here at home.

It's amazing to think about some of the people dubbed communists in this country.

Since OM is going through a push for statue removal too...

I'm gonna preface this comment with this: I hate OM and all she stands for. And my family had ZERO slaves and ZERO cotton fields and didn't even have a maid or servant of any kind.

The statue at the entrance of the OM campus is in remembrance of a group of confederate soldiers that died on battlefield and were buried in a random mass grave and bodies never returned home and their families never able to have a proper burial/memorial.

The wives/mothers of these dead confederate soldiers scratched and clawed for the money to produce the statue, baking cakes to sell, sewing clothes.

And it wasn't even supposed to be on the campus. The "leader" of this group of women went out of town around the time the statue was completed, and she was undermined by a few of the others to have the statue placed on campus. It never was originally slated to be there.

Despite the circumstances surrounding the ideology of the southern states at the time, it is sad that these men (many of whom may not have believed in slavery, or came from slave-owning families) and their descendants are going through the removal of the only thing memorializing them. (As they have no individual grave/gravestone/marker)

Are you talking about this one, the one erected in 1906 by the Daughters of the Confederacy? Or a different one?

Fair enough, I hope my posts on this board recently have provided a perspective that reconciles the one between those too quick to cry racism and those who are too quick to dismiss the effects racism has wrought on our country. I believe in the reasonable center.
