  • Rev. William James Leggett (b. Oct. 12, 1848, Ghent, NY; d. Oct. 28, 1925, Nyack, NY) was Rutgers Class of 1872, captain of the first Rutgers football team that beat Princeton 6–4 on Nov. 6, 1869, co-wrote the game’s rules, starred academically, edited The Targum, led baseball and crew, became a Dutch Reformed minister, and is buried at Claverack Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery.
