  Like I told him, the 2 mentioned, Watkins and Elite are both very reputable. I would get both to quote it. The guy I was talking about that would be cheaper is named Michael Keyes.   Lots of interesting things showed up on your post about a deer rifle for your son as he steps up from the .243 Winchester. I enjoyed reading all the responses but the thread got a little off topic.
  
  If you want to take an incremental step up, I still say a 7mm-08 or 6.5x55 would be great choices. Both are a step up from the .243 in killing power with negligible increase in recoil. I've got a Winchester Featherlight in 6.5x55 and love it. I'm sure I'd love the7mm-08 as well. Extremely comparable ballistics and a bit more popular that the 6.5x55.
  
  If you want to step up to a full power round, the .270 Winchester, 30-06, or .308 would be fine. It just depends on your son's age and size and tolerance of recoil. I love my .270. It definitely kicks though and so does a .30-06. Perhaps the best choice if you skip a so called intermediate round is to go for a bolt action .308. If recoil is a bit much, use low recoil rounds until he grows into the full powered .308 ammo.
