I'll say it again. KF adds his 2 cents but I think Lester has the most say in the final decision.

It's interesting, too, that it used to be an unwritten rule that an injured starter would not lose the job once 100% healthy.

Well, Hank is 100% and he lost his starting job.

And in principle it makes sense to not have a guy lose his starting job due to injury.

But for practical purposes, if the replacement is outplaying the original starter and they were already neck-and-neck before the injury... Go with the hot hand.

Specific to this year... They were dead even in the QB competition .,.then Hank slightly edged out Heck in the 1st game (most agreed that Hank did better). We now saw Heck in a full game and he outplayed anything Hank did the other starts. So Heck got his (one game) to earn the start, just like Hank did in game one.

I remember saying this earlier. If Heck begins to struggle, then go to Hank, and vice-versa, as long as Kirk is is approaching this with the "We have two good quarterbacks" theme.

Sounds a little too conspiratorial, maybe you're just joking, but I doubt Kirk would throw Heck under the bus like that. But like I said in my previous post, don't expect Heck to have an active day passing. Minny has the #2 pass defense against B1G conference teams. Iowa is dead last, #18, against conference foes. It's a small sample size of three games, but still a relevant stat. Got that from Cory from 'From The Hawkeye of the Storm'. Linked the video below starting at the timestamp he mentions the stat:

Rivalry games are always interesting.

As long as Iowa is disciplined & wins the turnover margin, I think they should win.

So is it possible their #2 against the pass because people are running the ball on them?

Maybe. But they had 7 sacks against Williams and Washington. I presume mostly from their D-Line, but don't know for certain.

Iowa had 5 sacks, same QB same team, but all 5 from Linebackers, whose soul purpose looked to me as to not let Williams run, and when he stayed in the pocket too long our Linebackers then went after him, and got him. They didn't seem to be covering anybody out of the backfield, just contain on a good running QB. Worked great, until Williams got hurt, and we didn't sniff the pocket passer the rest of the game.

They gave up 300 yards on the ground to Purdue of all teams, and only ran for 27 themselves. They'll be at Home though, that will likely help some, for awhile. Then we bury them in the 2nd half.

Per KF: Hank is 100%. Everybody has to be ready.

I have said it before; I really think Lester has a big say in who starts and KF adds his 2 cents.
If the decision were Lester's, I don't see how he chooses Brown, a guy who shuts down a lot of the playbook. Hecklinski, OTOH, opens it up. Everything is there. You saw it @ Washington, and in that drive vs. OSU. Hecklinski is a gamer. Brown is a game manager. Lester was a gamer himself, which is why he's said on multiple occasions that Heck reminds him of himself in his college days. Brown is the KF prototype--conservative game manager who's slow to deliver the ball, who often misses wide open receivers, and who cannot run or throw on the run. I don't have any inside info, but I just find it difficult to believe that Lester would go with Brown unless KF demanded it. And then there's KF's history of always choosing the wrong QB . . .

100% this...we have a very competent OC who has the final say in the QB room..finally, after all these years. KF's mismanagement of QB room is overruled and Heck absolutely gives us a better chance to win with more of the playbook there. Be ready for some QB draw and RPO QB keep game soon. Good news if some reason Heck gets dinged or we need a backup, we have a solid backup which UCLA and OSU would love to have right now. Just win Hawks, 1 B10 West team at a time!

On deciding between Hank and Heck:

Every week I look around the Big Ten at turnover margin and penalties. Jeremy played a pretty clean game last time out. Both have done well with their opportunities. I think we will be successful with either guy in there. It certainly helps us if we have a good run game (compare Washington vs Michigan).
"Both have done well with their opportunities." Uh-huh. Although the competition was "even," Brown started EVERY game--he even started vs. both NIU and UNI! What the hell is even about that? "Jeremy played a pretty clean game"--well, yes. He had ZERO turnovers on the road in his FIRST college start and led an offense that put up 41 points. That's pretty clean all right, especially compared to Brown coughing up the fumble, at home, that gave OSU a quick 7-0 lead, and later he threw an INT. But when Heck came in vs. OSU after sitting for three hours, he led a well-oiled machine on a 75-yard TD drive in less than four minutes during which he was 5-5, was getting rid of the ball quickly, and his timing and ball placement were excellent.

No one can take away Brown's brilliant game-winning TD pass that beat Michigan. That was awesome. But that one play, as great as it was, can't erase Brown's shortcomings or Hecklinski's upside.

Hank didn't lose his job because we was injured. He lost it because he was outplayed. Simple as that. Ask Wally Pipp.

RPO’s, yes. QB draws, not likely. In fact we’ve seen more designed runs for Hank than I expected. I don’t recall a single designed run for Heck yet.

You guys are really embarrassing yourselves with your micromismanagenent narratives.

Heck is not a dual threat qb.

And there's no such thing as an RPO qb keep. RPO has nothing to do with qb runs.

Maybe don't post things to a large group of public, that you know nothing about

RPO QB keep game soon.
I don't know how many times this needs to be explained, but QB run is not one of the designed choices on 99% of RPO plays. RPO is a handoff to the RB or pull the ball and make a quick throw if the box is stacked and the DBs are playing off the receivers. Zone read is the play where the quarterback reads the DE and decides if he's handing off or keeping it for himself and typically does not include a pass option.

KF said Brown is 100%.

So, again time to feel sorry for those narrators. What happened to KF being too stubborn?
What happened to choosing the right QB the first time? KF has been wrong on QBs throughout his career. That has been clearly demonstrated by several posters multiple times. The competition was "even," yet Brown got EVERY start until Washington. But better late than never--although it seems like it shouldn't take a quarter of a century plus.

It appeared the correct qb was "chosen" at that time.

And it appears the correct qb is being "chosen" at this time.

The competition was even until Brown won the job. This has been covered with you.

And now, Heck has won the job.

And it's been clearly demonstrated that the "KF getting qb's wrong" narrative is complete hogwash

Its also been clearly disputed many times by anyone who actually looks at facts and not their agenda. I've posted several times how wrong you were about the decision not to start Banks as a junior. Please state your FACTS as to why you think this Juco transfer who had never played ONE game of D1 football let alone P4 football should have been starting when NONE of the coaches believed he was ready. Was "pick six Rick" really the better option early in his career? Do you know how bad he might have been as an underclassman? Of course you don't, and yet you know better then his position coach and the HC on these events 15-25 years ago. Maybe its time you stop running this tripe out there.

I don't think you are wrong to favor Hecklinski as the starter. He's my pick at the moment as well.

That said, I think some of the arguments Heck’s supporters have been making aren’t grounded in the facts. Two examples:
  1. Heck “opens up the playbook.” I’d argue the opposite is more likely. It’s been said repeatedly that Hank has the stronger arm and can make a wider variety of throws, which gives Lester more options when calling plays, at least in the passing game. Also, as @DuddyB pointed out above, we've seen far more designed QB runs for Hank than we have seen for Heck.
  2. Heck is a better running threat. The numbers don’t support this. On the season, Hank has 17 carries for 16 yards, with a long of 10. Heck has 2 carries for 5 yards, with a long of 16. Statistically, there’s little difference, and Heck’s sample size is tiny. It’s also been said that Hank has better straight-ahead speed, for whatever that’s worth.
To be clear, I’m not arguing that Heck isn’t the better choice to start. There’s plenty of real evidence for him:
  1. He seems more accurate, at least when he’s in a rhythm.
  2. He’s on a hot streak, going 19/24 over his last two appearances.
  3. He looks more comfortable moving around in the pocket.
  4. He pushes the ball downfield more consistently.
  5. His QB rating (151.8) is higher than Hank’s (130.9).
  6. He has protected the ball better than Hank, despite Hank’s reputation as the more conservative of the two.
There are probably others, but the point stands: There are plenty of evidence-based reasons to favor Jeremy Hecklinski as our starter without resorting to Internet mythology.

Stats on these two right now are really difficult to decipher based on the sample sizes of Hecklinski. The top two stats really stick out. Adjusted completion percentage is likely a misnomer based on sample size.

Release time:
Brown: 2.65s Hecklinski: 2.3s

Yards per attempt:
Brown: 6.7 Hecklinski: 8.0

adjusted completion percentage
Brown: 72.2. Hecklinski: 78.9
