Hopefully they will give them the 5th year.
That's the expectation, given that Judge Edwards was the same one who originally ruled them eligible.

The NCAA appealed, challenging that the TRO was actually an injunction, and the KY Court of Appeals ruled in their favor on a technicality as there was no evidentiary hearing, which is required for an injunction.

This week's hearing was to present evidence, which parties could challenge. The NCAA objectively did not do well.

So, the judge could issue a favorable ruling, and they'll be eligible. That ruling could also be appealed, but during the pendency of the appeal, they'll remain eligible. If the Appeals court rules in the players' favor, then that's likely the end unless the KY Supreme Court takes the case, and of course the opposite is true as well.

That's my cliff notes understanding. Not an attorney, so some of the legal details may not be exactly precise, but the overall picture should be accurate.

So if this judge rules him eligible doesn’t that mean Mitchell would have been okay to stay too as long as told sankley to go FO?

regardless we need afari. Badly
Well, Sankey and the SEC is kind of an important hurdle that wasn't gonna be overcome w/r/t Mitchell. It was such a dick move, too.

If it’s solely about transferring I don’t understand how Aberdeen is allowed to play, regardless of whether he got into the portal in time
This has been explained like 73 times, I'm not sure how anyone could possibly still be confused about the facts (being confused as to the logic of what has and hasn't been allowed is another matter but the plain facts are simple). It isn't solely about transferring. There was an SEC rule about WHEN you are allowed to transfer within the conference. Aberdeen entered the portal during the window the SEC allows. Mitchell didn't. There has been no court case challenging that SEC rule. There have been court cases challenging the NCAA rule on allowing 5th years for everyone EXCEPT this class.

Let me rephrase. I understand the rules genius.
I don’t understand WHY it’s a rule.

Hope this helps.

Alex is needed bad at a position we’re very thin at the moment. He’s a great defender who’s been through the wars so him playing Saturday could make a huge impact. In my opinion, he’s worth 7 points on the scoreboard for one of us. In my opinion, I think we win without him, but with him could make the game look different. Here’s hoping they do the right thing and let the young man play Football. This game is a great opportunity for this program to take a huge step forward.

You clearly didn't understand, or you wouldn't have asked "if it's solely about transferring..." considering it is NOT solely about transferring. Nice attempt at scrambling after the fact, though.

Not to be dramatic, but getting Afari back for the fame tomorrow might be the difference between winning and losing
For sure. We can’t let them turn three yards into 15 plus. Barnes missed a few against LSU that cost us some big yards and 3rd downs. I think he was gassed of course but Alex isn’t missing those tackles. That’s a huge difference in momentum and will result in points that we can’t afford. I think Barnes is going to be fine but he must clean those up. Anyone know when we find out?

Sure, but where the argument is still valid is that it was stupid for any player exhausting eligibility to enter the portal. Then, when they were ruled by the court case and allowed to transfer, the SEC pulled the jerk move of not allowing a one-time exception because of the new ruling.

So, it is kinda still just about transferring. Either way, what we can probably all agree on is that everyone (fans, players, coaches, etc) is debating because of some really poor decisions/leadership from higher levels

No disagreement from me, the NCAA/SEC are being dumb af

..but you're right! It would be huge, especially being so thin at LB right now.
The subs played hard and did pretty good against LSU but we gave up a lot of chunk yards, particularly in the first half.
Have to think having Afari back is pretty big in this game.

Let's hope he plays!

I can answer that. It was a football rule to prevent ghost transfers. No one ever conceived it would be applied to basketball.
There used to be 2 portal windows. In football, kids would go thru spring practice, end up buried on the depth chart, or show out. Then enter the portal and go to another SEC school taking the spring playbook with them. Coaches complained. The 2nd portal window was closed down. Now if you go through spring practice, you’re stuck with that team.
Enter the cheaters… Several schools then signed ghost transfers. Players went through spring practice, then just quit the team. There was no portal so they just magically appeared on LSUs roster after quitting at Ole Miss. No portal entry, but went to another SEC school. This rule was agreed to by all schools that no one would accept ghost transfers. Every school signed it except 2. LSU and A&M. It passed.
So, if you don’t enter the portal before spring. No way you can go play for another SEC school.
Sankey choosing to enforce it on a basketball kid is telling. No other BB player has it been enforced on. Sankey didn’t want Mitchell at UK so he pulled out a football rule. Plain and simple. Mitchell committed to UK. The very next day Sankey sent out a memo to all schools saying he would enforce this rule. That was 100% directed at Mitchell. Mitchell’s attorneys met with Sankey to plead his case that the rule wasn’t intended for what he was enforcing. The next day Mitchell recommitted and enrolled in Mizzou.
