If it's the long game, what it is about Matt Campbell that anyone thinks is going to make PSU better, and consistently better, than it has been since 1986? I honestly can't think of anything.
times have changed significantly in college football. We all have to remember that not only was Kraft late in making a hire, so was Campbell in coming to Penn state. I think he did what a rational person would, bring as many players as possible;e - those he thought could play in the B1G - with him as a base for 2026. Remember he wasn't left a full closet.

Now he needs to figure out what works in the B1G.. Indiana has gone the portal route and so far that's working for them (clearly JMU had a better base of players than Iowa State). Is Campbell going to go the recruit and develope rout, the portal route or some combination. We have the best of both programs, ISU and PSU, on the offensive line and still can't run the ball. So, are Mouser's schemes too simplistic, too complicated, or are the "best of both" just not very good? I don't know, but like in the Wisconsin game, trying the same thing, failing and then trying again and again, and again, might not be the smartest route.

We knew we had problems on the dline and losing Glanville didn't help. But if the guys in there can't do the jon, try some new people.

I don't know what happened to our tackling....

There was a tweet in one of the threads showing how far PSU’s blue chip ratio fell after last year. It’s definitely a talent issue right now.

Campbell has to work through it and raise the talent level in the program.

As we all know, Franklin spoke out publicly about the need for PSU to put money into the program. He got it, and PSU has good facilities. An issue now is NIL. o_O . I could be wrong, but Campbell doesn’t strike me as someone who will say a lot about it publicly (no ELITE. o_O rants), but he’s going to have do something if there is any hope of PSU significantly elevating the talent level. It’s a question whether Campbell can do it. He’s never had to before.

Fun thought exercise: if they put Franklin’s final $9 million buyout figure into NIL money, then where does that rank them nationally?

My math says 3rd on the Big Ten at about $40 million. Thats about on par with Indiana, USC and Michigan. And it gets them to #12 or so nationally.

It’s still $10 million to $15 million behind Ohio St and Oregon.

Campbell still needs to evaluate talent and spend wisely, but Penn State doesn’t spend all that much right now by contender standards.

Once Franklin’s buyout leaves the books, that should materially change.

We need to get our NiL into the top 15. No options otherwise. Campbell also has to recruit top 15 classes and once every 4 years get a top 10 class. If both do not happen then we will be stuck as a mid tier B10 team and perhaps bottom third in the conference.

I’d argue top 10. They have some structural challenges to overcome. Most notably the continued decline of top D1 talent in their traditional recruiting grounds.

Miss a Kemon Spell and there’s no viable replacement. You simply have to spend to make sure you don’t miss those guys.
