Second game in a row where the offensive play caller for the opposition is fully aware of how Danton Lynn's defense operates.
-Chip Kelly was with Lynn @ UCLA
-Lincoln Riley (USC) had Lynn as DC last year

Might be looking at another blowout, this time in front of home crowd.
It doesn’t matter what defense Lynn calls if the players get pushed around, play with no energy and passion and then quit.

He lost to UCLA and Northwestern last year with his "perfect roster" and this was always going to be a rebuild
He lost to Pitt Friday night at home blowing at 14-0 and Pitt lost their QB for the second half
You're overselling Franklin.
VaTech lost because a kicker who was 61 for 71 missed a makeable FG with 3 seconds left despite 4 turnovers (not like being the beneficiary of 3 turnovers including a pick 6 and blowing a 17 point lead). Pitt’s back up
QB was easily better than Becht. You can rail all you want about Franklin but at least he has accomplishments on his resume like a Big Ten Championship and two playoff wins. Meanwhile, I am waiting for the allegedly “superior” coach to win a single Big Ten game.

Va Tech lost because they were even in a situation that they need a kick to win. Even James said they didn't lose because of the kick. Here you go:

“Everyone is going to focus on the last play. This isn’t coach speak, but we’re going to watch this tape and there are going to be 20 plays that we could have made to put us in a better position and not be in that situation at the end.”

He's right--Grunk and others had a far bigger impact on the loss than the kicker.

Grunk was better than Becht on Friday--and??? He still wasn't good enough. He's the primary reason they were trailing and lost.

Shouldn't we compare Franklin and MC after 12 years? Not what one accomplished in over a decade vs 5 games? He beat SMU and Boise State in the playoff--let's be real about the accomplishment. I mean, come on. I'm not giving MC credit for beating bad teams. What is Franklin's record vs Ohio State? Michigan? Basically any quality opponent.? The first game at Va Tech against someone with a pulse they lost at home.

Who said MC was going to be superior in year one? The hope is he grows into what Franklin proved he couldn't. If MC doesn't then we move on but that doesn't alter Franklin had to go

Also, did anyone here want MC as their top choice--some of us aren't just going to blame him for hire and give him 3 years to build something. You know--logical

Of course...we did with Wisconsin
I still firmly believe you all are underestimating how good Northwestern is. If they didn't have the most difficult schedule in the Big Ten they'd probably win 9 or 10 games...even with it they might win 9.
We were awful but Northwestern is very good.
Yeah Lando Northwestern is good. I agree with you. It appears getting Chip Kelly was a great move. Braun is a good coach. Just don't know how good quite yet. They could be B10 #4 after OSU, Indiana and Oregon. Maybe Iowa is right there with them. I think it would be close and they could lose to USC or UDub or Iowa on the road.

We are much worse than anyone thought. I thought we could legitimately win 9 games this year. What a fool I was.

Call me crazy but I gotta believe Becht starts playing better. He was not this bad at ISU. I think we play our best B10 game (low bar) vs USC and I think the game is close. I don't know if we can win but we won't embarrass ourselves. The D concerns me and how slow, soft and unathletic we look. I think USC can put up at least 28 on us so we probably can't keep up. Maybe the WO crowd gives us some extra juice and USC plays their typical below average game when traveling east.

Largely agree...I dont feel good about USC as I think we desperate need Howard to open up our offense. Hoping for the best...its all we can do

LOL. His cupboard was getting pretty bare. He would have had to have a major infusion of portal starting talent. T. Smith did more with last year’s team than Franklin did.

I wonder what Terry Smith thinks about the current situation. He wanted to be the head coach. How does he feel as an assistant in this SH|T. SHOW. o_O ?

On a related note, what would our roster look like had Smith gotten the job, especially had he been named head coach right after Franklin was sh|tcanned? In that scenario, he would have had a chance to salvage at least some of the recruiting class and held onto some of the kids already at PSU. Of course, he would not have brought in 20+ kids from isu. Given how PSU finished last season, we might be in a much better position right now had Smith gotten the job. On the other hand, championships are the standard, so…😞

I totally respect what he did last season, but hiring Smith as the head coach would’ve been a very shortsighted and incorrect move IMO.

It simply amazes me how so many don’t want to give Campbell time to build this program. He inherited a mess and a program that arguably was in a worse situation than in 2012 because of the negligence of the AD. It’s now obvious that it’s going to take several seasons of recruiting and portal classes to get this program back to a typical Franklin season, and there’s no guarantee that that’s going to happen.

A common theme with Coach Franklin's teams is their ability to lose excruciating close games, quite often in an unexpected fashion. It could be a QB throwing a pick, a RB scoring a TD instead of falling before the goal line, the list goes on with a variety of ways.

He is arguably the top “if only…” coach there is.

It's easy to blame the coaches, but the problem is much bigger. There is a lack of talent on both sides of the ball. I don't think there are a lot of kids on the roster who will be drafted by NFL teams.
Both lines are really mediocre.

When I see the Pats beat the Bills, it gives a bit of hope that PSU could pull something off. That said, the chances of BOTH the offense and defense getting it together is slight.

PSU will have the crowd who will have a short attention span. They have to keep them. The DT's from UCLA have something to play for.

One potential negative factor for USC is that they have had back to back high intensity/emotional games in a row (at home).

Here’s to hoping their “youngsters” will not have the same focus/intensity for a cross country trip vs. an opponent that wouldn’t naturally generate the same feelings. It wouldn’t be the first time to happen in cfb.
