I’m also fixated by the fan with the giant white hat, just above McDole; two seats down from the guy with the plastic fireman hat.

Maybe he was trying to stay out of the sun with the big hat? My dad use to roll up newspaper pages in the window to act as sun shades to keep the sun off of us.

UF was 1-10 that year.

The next year they beat State in Gainesville at the beginning of the year with a ShiTON of paid players. It was our only SEC loss of the season.

Crooked Charley Pell was the UF coach and they had to forfeit all of their wins that season where they used players the NCCA finally deemed ineligible. One of them was our game.

So officially we were undefeated in the SEC and were given the chance to share the 1980 SEC championship with UGA. We declined.

The next season we played an amazing game against UGA in Memorial Stadium where Haddix had more yards than Herschel Walker.

We're moving down the field to score what would have been the winning touchdown. but lost on a 17n inexplicable John Bond fumble.

His own knee may have hit the ball, but from the replay it looked like the ball turned into a helium balloon and just started floating straight up.

Injuns are real and God is not an MSU fan.

Never forget it.

As am I and was around the Jackson area and went to most of the Memorial Stadium games each year.

I remember watching that game on T.V. It was a great game we were matching them play for play.

Hate that it ended the way it did.

I'm old and was there

I was a kid, but didn’t think that sounded right.

It was in fact in 1982 in Starkville and Bond did fumble late. Lost 29-22. Herschel ran 39 times for 215 yards and won the Heisman that season. Georgia went 11-0 and lost to Penn State in the Sugar Bowl.

This was the first ever nationally televised game from Starkville, and here’s a nice historical record of it. The full deal, vintage commercials and all, but because the NFL feels the need to own 44 year old content from a college game you gotta go to YouTube to see it. The crazy Bond fumble is at approximately 3:02:00…

Acturally it was worst. They finished 0-10-1, they tied Georgia Tech the week before us. Was there for the game and we returned to the hotel in Jackson and there was a bunch of gator fans in the room next to us and we listened to their cussing, yelling and moaning for a hour before we decided to go grab a steak at the Sizzler on 55. They kept saying, "GD, it was only Miss State." We laughed all the way to the Sizzler.

does anyone remember this catch by Mardee against Florida to break open a tight game? There are 3 gators chasing him and the ball that was slightly overthrown but he tips it to himself and races to the end zone. Might have been the fall of 1979?
I can say that I was there and saw it first hand from Mississippi Memorial Stadium. I was 11.

THE "run Lindsey run" play is what cost us the Sugar Bowl.

And ultimately won them a national title. The Georgia legend Larry Munson on the call (I think he and Jack were good buddies)…

Side note, Pittsburgh, under Jackie Sherrill, finished #2 in 1980. Jackie had a little bit of talent with Dan Marino at QB, Outland Trophy winner Mark May at OT, Saints legend and Pro HOF LB Rickey Jackson and the best defensive player in the country in Hugh Green (from Natchez). And oh yeah, another future Pro HOF OL in Russ Grimm and another future Pro Bowl OL in Jimbo Covert and 2 time Pro Bowl DT Bill Maas.
