Does Sellers at least have a short leash going forward?

I really don't see any way Beamer benches Sellers. I just don't think he has it in him. To be sure, last night's abysmal loss was not entirely on Sellers. The D had some majorly enormous busts that, if executed properly, probably allows us to win the game. But Sellers had some equally abysmal throws. The one on 4th and goal from the 10 when there were 2 massively humongous defenders standing directly in his line of sight and he threw it right into the defenders' huge paws was just.....awful.

Then the 2 picks in the 2nd half were simply horrendous throws. Among the poorest throws you'll see a starting P4 QB make.

He seems to have the worst combination of lacking situational awareness, poor field vision and bad throwing.

In his defense, he is on his 3rd OC in 3 years, which has surely been detrimental to his development, but that's pretty much an irrelevant point.

I just don't know, if he comes and looks similarly bad against Alabama, on the road, how long do you give it before you try something else. Or will Beamer just ride with Sellers, no matter the outcome?

Sellers is one heel of a threat running with the ball. But his passing game is suspect same as last year.

. . . how long do you give it before you try something else. Or will Beamer just ride with Sellers, no matter the outcome?
As fans, we’ve had enough exposure to Sellers to realize he’s not the QB we hoped he’d be, nor is he the “Heisman candidate” Beamer tried to promote. Everything you stated is an accurate assessment of Sellers.

As to your last question, until there are player contracts and expected standards, these young men will have the leverage to be on the field regardless of their production.

Can you see Beamer going to the NIL donor(s) and saying, “I’m going to bench the player you are paying millions because I was wrong about his ability and our coaching”? I can’t.

Not anymore. He looks for the sidelines or a way to avoid contact. He's playing scared / exposed. (IE: not a good QB) His legs and size is his only real threat, and someone neutered his legs last season. He's basically worthless at this point.

18 - No.

Why take a shot at plugging in the backup QB and possibly salvaging a good season + your job, when you can keep that QB on the bench, and destroy this season AND next season with an inexperienced QB. And cost you your job.

Of those scenarios, which is the Gamecock way?? - Exactly. 2 for 1. Just idiotic. Sellers is clearly not a QB. I saw something somewhere where someone did his QBR #'s for all 3 seasons and he's declined in all 3 years.

Kinda feel bad for Shane.
Sellers had such and extraordinary 1st season that we painted ourselves in the corner with him.
I don't think anyone saw this coming.

I have to think....what would Steve do? Steve would bench Sellers in a heartbeat. There's the answer.

I don't think 18istheman, I just don't believe he has the desire to hold Sellers accountable. In his teleconference call last night he even acknowledges the OL line gave him plenty of time (as he reference a clean pocket) but gave credit the coverage by MSU. At this point, I will try to curb my optimism and try to find the positives, such the vastly improved performance of our OL and we have discovered a solid FG kicker. Perhaps we can keep this upcoming game with Alabama respectable.

This is where Beamer really loses me. He's so defensive. Coverage had NOTHING to do with those interceptions by Sellers. They were just inexcusably bad throws from a P4 starting QB.

Maybe he has analysis paralysis. Happens to athletes who are over-coached. I don't mean to say that Briles has over-coached him, but just that he has been coached by 3 different guys in the last 3 years.

For sure his development has been hampered by having a new OC every year so far.

Even though there is some credence to giving someone else a try, I agree that the season will "ride or die" with Sellers. To do otherwise, would be admission of defeat by Beamer and would most likely end with him being fired as Head Coach. You would need a miracle performance by Woods or anyone else to come in and save the season with no previous experience. One thing I may try is to bring Woods in for a few series against Alabama if it gets out of hand. See what he can do against an Alabama defense even if it is against backups. Get him comfortable with some reps under his belt. It, also, would allow Sellers to take a step back and relax. You can tell in his throwing motion that he is not trusting what he sees out there and turning it loose. He is aiming the ball.

The staff probably rides Sellers right up until the seaon is truly lost.

If, and its a big if, we lose to UK after Alabama, we look to have a string of losses coming. Somewhere in there, when it becomes clear we're not playing in a bowl, I could see the staff "looking to the future" and teying out the younger guys more.

Like this, but if Beamer doesn't know if he's even in the picture next year, he won't do it IMO.

Or maybe he just can't process quickly enough to execute in real-time? Some people are mental tractors and others are drag racers - strong, slower workhorses or quick-witted.

Regardless, his inaccuracy isn't a result of over (or under) coaching, it's an ability thing. Either he can make accurate throws or he can't. So, far, he hasn't demonstrated he can and anyone paying attention has seen that since the beginning. At first it was a suspicion based on the occasional but still too often throw, but we have a big enough body of work to now say it's a fact. It is who he is. If the coaches choose to ignore that, then they'll live with the results.

Beamer has painted himself into a corner with Seller and Harbor. He has let them become the faces of the offense and making a change would bring about questions about everything else he has sold the fans. Sellers is not a good QB and Harbor is not a good WR, that is obvious to anyone who has watched them play.

Beamer needs to stick with them and hope things work out. If he brings in Woods and Woods doesn't light it up, Beamer looks foolish. Woods should have gotten more reps against the cupcakes.

If you remember, his first year, most misses were high. Now everything is short. Somebody messed him up.

That said, if it is him that is getting out of bounds and not paying with the reckless abandon he used to, sit him. If it is a coach that is removing that part of his game, that needs to change. He is not a a pocket passer, but a good creator.

Hadn't thought of it in these terms but yeah, Sellers will be the man for the season no matter what. Beamer is too petty to admit he was wrong.

They ought to go into the Bama game knowing they'll give Woods some real reps, put him in sometime in the 2nd for a series. Spurrier once said of Shaw that he played better in the games that he knew Dylan Thompson was going to play. In 2013 it was a regular occurrence for DT to get some regular action when the game was still meaningful. Maybe that could work here.

Maybe play both - would also take some pressure off of Lanorris. Having said that, Tuscaloosa may not be the best place to insert Woods. Would depend on the score though. If we are out of it I would put him in.

We have all made bad decisions in life. My last one was buying a Range Rover, what a POS! But I realized that I had to get rid of it, sold it at a loss and moved on to something more reliable.

I wonder if Beamer can realize his mistakes, cut his losses and move on to try and save his lucrative job?

I'm not sure if it's a short leash but I hope he's at least on one. As others have stated he's seems to be regressing yearly instead of progressing. I hope his field vision improves drastically this week or Saturday night may be a long one for the defense. Personally I'm hoping for a typical Carolina thing to do and somehow come out of Tuscaloosa with a W after looking so bad against MSU.

Or go through progressions. I think he decides who he is throwing to before the snap and maybe has one secondary receiver in mind.
If these things are true, and there is evidence to say they may be, why do we continue to make him stand in the pocket? He has looked bad to pedestrian a lot over the last year…but it isn’t all on him.

Turn him loose. He is at his best when there is chaos.

People seem to forget that in 2024 Sellers looked pretty bad for the first 6 games. He really only had a 6 game run where he balled out. Ever since then everyone has expected only what we saw the last 6 games of the season and have clearly forgotten he first 6.

The problem with "turn him loose" is, opposing DCs know how to contain him now. They know they don't have to sack him, they only have to make him uncomfortable in the pocket and contain him. If there aren't open running lanes and he is forced to hold the ball, he will make a bad decision.

Designed QB runs are some of his best plays because that is what he likes to do the most. Unfortunately, those runs get pretty easy to defend when the D starts looking for them.
