I’m Granting Greg Schiano a Mulligan for 2026

You assumed the worst from my premium thread, which said, put aside the fact that Pikiell is sick. (We are obviously all praying for his speedy recovery)

Doesn’t Schiano deserve the same mulligan that Steve was granted? Steve’s mulligan was granted before his medical condition was known. And I’m fine with it. This year we pulled in a much better bb transfer portal class because we had money.

Football should be in the same position in January, so Schiano deserves the same opportunity. And I believe I read from you that you said that Schiano deserves a mulligan. So we’re actually in agreement.

No - absolutely not. Not even close. Pike had built up a TON of collateral in breaking a 30 YEAR NCAA drought. He produced 3 straight tournament caliber teams (2019-20 was a lock for the field). And the year after that just missed the field. He inherited the same trash Greg did (took over a 7 win team). Making the NCAAs is a world’s bigger accomplishment than going 6-6 or 7-5 in football without ever having a 500 record in league play. 9-11 teams don’t make the field in basketball.

So the thing is - after 3 straight years of success unprecedented in 3 decades - a couple down seasons of course had to be tolerated by the fan base. We’re not a blue blood after all that is expected to routinely reload. The only case against Pike had to “hold it against him” that he succeeded in recruiting Ace and Dylan in the first place. So no. There was plenty of basis to give him that chance. Last season had the potential to fall off the rail for Pike but he passed the test of stabilizing the program. No - we weren’t “good”, but Pike has never had a season that compares to a 1-11 football season. None close.

Im not sure Greg will even get the chance, but heck, if he turns this around and finds 5 wins somehow by all means, circle back on that mulligan. But cut the horse crap following 2 back to back losses that figure to align with a loss to CC. Football is only 12 games. You can’t survive with 2 of those kind of losses and not cancel them out with big time wins.

Rutgers brought back pike for another year and that’s all that matters

That's not what you are arguing though.
Try and keep up.

You are arguing Greg deserves the same mulligan Pike got.

Just like Pike - nearly everyone disagrees.
Your argument seems it should be directed towards AD Zinn. She is the one who gave Pike a mulligan.
Nobody here wanted to.

The 2 things are not the same at all regardless of how popular Pike’s retention was.

If there was ever an argument to boot Pike it would’ve been immediately following the Ace / Dylan debacle but that would’ve essentially punished him for the success he had in recruiting them in the first place. 3 years of NCAA level teams does buy some collateral at Rutgers whether folks like it or not.

Pike arguably had a successful season last year in stabilizing the program. Nobody wanted to come here after what happened with Ace and Dylan. Combine that with the funding handicap all our programs had at that point and there was never a realistic path for him to be good last year. The question was whether we could avoid falling to laughing stock status ala what football seems to be trending towards now. Pike succeeded with that - retained some of his better players and brought in some guys that have at least a chance of working out in combo with our returners. Needless to say - that program on paper is at least trending up from where it was last off season.

in contrast, the defense in football projected to be unwatchable to begin with but the team turned out to be worse than anyone ever could’ve imagined.

He made mistakes. Before I estimate the value for the UMass QB, I’d have to send you an invoice. I don’t work for free. And we both know you don’t have budget.
What the hell does that even mean. You make these bizarre assumptions and assertions regarding numbers not being correct. Yet you can’t back it up when called on it.
And what makes you think Greg will change his ways. Offered a GM but didn’t want to give up the “control”. So in turn hired multiple people rather than one to assume the same responsibility.

My take on Greg. Twice, he played a very important role in bringing Rutgers out of the dung heap.
and both times, I’m not sure someone could have.

but, in both cases, he hit the point of needing a change. The first time- timing was horrible and Rutgers screwed it up big time. This time, the ousted AD screwed up with the massive extension. It made no sense.
Now, we have a capable AD but she has to dance between- we owe him a lot and up to this year, he has not gotten the support. Let’s give him full support and see what he does in 2026.

I do not think there is anything that saves him now unless he finds a way to a + .500 conference record.

Well said. I’m grateful for what he did the first time around - we’re not in the B1G without him. And I’m grateful he returned and got us out of the toilet. But he’s peaked - and now we’re on backside of that.

Al seems to be ignoring the fact that the NIL money is going to dry up - no one is throwing millions to a coach whose ceiling is caving in and the empty seats are going to crush revenue to the department. We’re at the start of the death spiral and it’s better to get out of it before we hit Ash or Shea level bad.

Lol why are you on a football message board? Rutgers is a University, what does football take away from Rutgers as a University? All the new 💩 that gets built in coming years will be because of the big 10 and football, where do you rutgers1000 kids even come from? Must be like western new jersey lol

At the end of the day, their QBs outplayed ours, by a large margin. Coaches shouldn’t be expected to transform chickenshit into chicken salad right away. These kids have to be developed.

The kids are working to get better and they should be better at the end of the season. With hindsight being 20/20, we should have paid up for a good quarterback with a strong track record. UVA paid roughly $2M for Beau Pribula. Penn State paid a good amount for Rocco Becht. Indiana supposedly spent $4M on Josh Hoover. Successful quarterbacks cost money.
How were UMass and BC, teams that combined for a 2-22 record last season, able to look like chicken salad against RU? Was it the princely sum that UMass spent on a backup QB that was picking splinters out of his @SS? Or the generous pile of cash that BC spent on their D2 QB? RU paid more for Lonergan than BC and UMass spent on their QBs. Lonergan transformed into a turnover machine under KC's tutelage, while the D2:Guy and Mr. Splinters were transformed into the second coming of Michael Vick. Why do you suppose that is?

No you said it was relative to all so it’s the best satay to use. Now you’re an expert on two specific programs that you want to say are now outliers of the very data you claimed was the best available lol.

You're talking about Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oregon and just like Indiana did Rutgers can catch up to them pretty easily with a good coach. Rutgers is prime real estate, it's the only major college football team in between NYC and Washington DC.. we all say it's pro sports now, what pro sports league in the USA doesn't have a team in this area? Get this guy Schiano out of there so this thing can get built the right way..if people don't like what's about to happen they can always follow Princeton football for the type of academic standards that you seek. I find it hard to believe that people were worried about academics any more or less pre nil but who knows..

Al is spinning. I have long had to negotiate with people of Al’s ilk. Al’s attempts at dodging and weaving is very ordinary. He’s a bad faith actor.

He scares girls. This is a fact. He can’t get a girlfriend and never could, which is why he’s single now and had to come to a football message board seeking advice on how to get one. Again, true story as we all know. Now he’s claiming he’s some sort of stud lol. He’s long past being able to keep his lies straight. We’ve all seen him. He’s an ugly guy with a beer belly. It’s a bad combo to bagging girls. Hence why he can’t get one. The scaring girls part is super creepy. He’s known in the AD as we know, and it’s not because he has one season ticket.

We all know people believe anything they see on the Internet now days, this infatuation we currently have with trolling has to stop. And it's the old people that do it the most. The girlfriend thing tracks. As most who have dated know, there’s a point in a relationship when you realize it’s over and it’s run its course - no amount of nostalgia is going to bring back the good times. That’s Greg. We’re nostalgic for a season that happened 20 years ago.

Like a relationship that’s over, it’s only going to get worse from here.

🗣️ Last year was the mulligan, Illinois time out was the mulligan. He had more support building this roster than ever before. Over 20 million, he chose to lease 3 Lamborghinis and fill the rest of the lot with Prius's, used ones at that, from the 2010s...this is the roster schiano bragged about, the oline depth that he raved about, the violent linebackers that are "bad dudes" from rice and drake. He might have dementia now because he scouted and recruited this roster then watched them in the spring, then summer camp and thought this would be a good team. He's lost his marbles

No it wasn’t. At least not in that way. He wasn’t on the “hot seat” from the Illinois loss. Maybe some fans thought he should be, but that wasn’t reality. The truth is even at 5-7 this season he’d likely have been retained because we were thinking long haul vs. short term. Laying an 0-2 egg changes things massively.

For the avoidance of doubt, neither Greg 2.0 nor Pike have had a season anything like what football 26 is trending towards. Not making the NCAAs with Ace and Dylan was a national story because of who they are, but at the end of the day, Pike brought them here so he gets credit for that and shouldn’t be penalized based on it either rather at the end of the day it’s his record. Fact remains he’s won at least 14 games in every season he’s been at Rutgers. While 14 wins isn’t “good” it isn’t in the same universe as 1-11 in football. Again - if Greg turns the corner feel free to circle back. The teams we played already only project to be better than Howard though. Nobody gets a “mulligan” for a 1-11 season unless it’s their very first season taking over a train wreck (like what Joe H had last year).

Hypothetically, if Pike/ Brandin wins only 3 total games then sure, even with Pike battling illness Kelly would have a tough decision but this is very unlikely to happen.

I think Zinn was likely hoping to keep Greg for 2-3 more years while she works out the funding for a big hire. I think the plan was to give both Pike and Greg 2 seasons to prove it. Greg has made that impossible - 1-11 in year 7 is awful. Defending it is insane.

Yes - exactly. And while 1-11 is technically not etched in stone yet, if he loses by a bundle tomorrow he might not even get a chance to “beat some teams you think I won’t” as Greg put it in his presser.

But this is where I don’t understand any comparisons to Pike at all. Never mind the inappropriateness of the timing to start a string suggesting Pike shouldn’t be cut slack. Even if you put his health aside, Pike has never come remotely close to winning less than 10% of his games. And again, neither had Greg before this season which is how he plummeted from pretty far away from the short term hot seat to practically baking in the fire already.

Im not rooting for it (like most, I’m still shocked at how terribly the season has started), but at some point - (1-4, 1-5?), the team is going to quit and just go through the motions.

Basketball is a terrible comparison - 2 games a week and roster turnover has been insane (in the sport overall) - and I don’t think there’s nearly as much of a disparity between the talent of lower end teams as there is at the generic P4/5 level in bball (obviously, Duke, KU, UConn et al are in a different tier). A mac kid can have the game of his life in bball and take down a P4, but that should never happen in football, not with the size/strength/athleticism disparity.

Football hasn’t had to replace 70% of the roster each year. It’s also kind of shocking that there was no plan for QB. And getting rid of Flaherty (who is back in the NFL) seems to be a terrible decision.

As we know all too well, being on the hot seat becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. How is Greg going to attract talent or recruit this season if basically everyone knows he’ll be unemployed in December.

The upside is that with NIL, it’s not a 4-5 year rebuild if we get the right coach in place.

Noooooo!!! Rutgers is not spending the same. Not even close. We will never spend 50M in NIL plus 22M in school money. It ain’t gonna happen.

Instead, we will buy a couple of marquee players, and the we have to surround the with inexpensive players from Drake and Citidel.

that 50 million is the OSU, USC, Texas, Oregon level.

the vast majority of schools are in the 20- low 30 million range. We’re there too. This isn’t about NIL.

You’re assuming that it’s coming out of the operating budget and not fund raised to specifically cover the costs.

They are doing lots of fund raising right now for NIL, projects and other needs.
If Zinn had the funds. Greg would be gone.
Pike isn;t going anywhere and is safe , at least until the end of the 2027-28 season.
Mire than likely Greg will be back next year, only because Zinn didn't get enough boosters to pony up Greg's buyout and the BOG wouldn't let her dump him and have enough school funding to bring in the type of HC she wants.
Keli might want Schiano gone like most of this board does, but will be short of cash to buy Greg out and have the money to bring in someone she considers a winner.
