All the advantages Iowa has in terms of money, they should mop the floor with an Iowa State.

“holding” “it’s their Super Bowl ”. Crybaby excuses. It’s not like Iowa loses to Iowa State sometimes and then rallies to the college football playoff or wins the Big Ten Championship game. Iowa sometimes would win the west, which was a joke.

blow their doors off and move on. If you can’t, that’s an Iowa problem.

we all know if ISU was off the schedule they would schedule a doormat.

I have been offered tickets to UNI game by three different people, I think even the fans are getting tired of garbage games. I wish football had a commissioner and took over some scheduling. Fans deserve better for what they are paying.

Take emotion and pride out of the equation. After that, the logic (and money) fall WAY more on the side of discontinuing it from a Hawkeye perspective.

^^^^ You do realize this means half the people on this board are now no longer TRUE Hawkeye fans ?!? Of course I'm on the Captain's good side so I will continue to be known as the best Hawkeye ever.

Every OTHER season so we can work in another P4 program.
Every third year would be plenty for me. My preference would be to ignore ISU altogether, but if Iowa thinks it MUST play them, then only do it every third year. Annually is too much of a bad thing. There's never an upside for Iowa, so why the hell do it?

I don't know that. Actually, I think Iowa (Beth) would schedule another P4 opponent, possibly an SEC team.

It would be a better schedule for Iowa fans, some variety every two years or so. I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Ten requires at least ten games vs. P4 teams- call it the Indiana rule.

If I owned or managed a hotel in the IC/CR area I would love it. Clown fans drive in, watch the game, then drive home.

Neither Iowa or isu is ever making a run deep for a championship so this game is strictly for the bragging rights. This is a game the whole state gets together for. Iowa vs Isu should play in every sport every year

Johnny Cougar is not even close to being a big time college football donor net worth wise, and Mark Cuban didn’t donate a cent until after Cigs first year. Cubans Donations help but Cig would’ve been competing for championships either way.
It’s much more comfortable for Hawkeye fans to believe that Indiana just went out and bought a championship and there weren’t any other factors involved, particularly coaching quality.

Take emotion and pride out of the equation. After that, the logic (and money) fall WAY more on the side of discontinuing it from a Hawkeye perspective.

1) the $$$ advantage is strictly in ISUs favor. Iowa would sell out a home game regardless who they play. ISU would not.

2) playing a team from another state would bring $$$ into the state from outside visitors.

3) outside competition would increase TV viewership outside of the state - Iowa is low population and by itself cannot creat large media demand. Even playing a team like Pittsburgh, for example as we’ve done in the past, brings in a larger state and metro viewership.

4) expand recruiting base (see #3 above)

5) beating ISU does nothing for national image, but losing is a major hit to the perception and image (this is a fact, not an emotional argument). And it’s the only point that is remotely associated to the game outcome.

Here’s the final point I’d make, and I do bring emotion back into it here. ISU thinks about Iowa 52 weeks a year. Iowa thinks about ISU one week per year. That’s the professional way to approach it, but frankly the schedule dictates it. The BIG 12 is a second tier league with secondary market universities. The fact the Iowa has to be forced to be concerned about the survivorship of ISU only widens the challenge vs in conference school that have one major state university (Wisconsin, OSU…even Nebraska) as the population base (and again, $$$ support) can only go so far vs other schools with much bigger populations, corporations, and huge donors.

Arguing to keep this game literally only benefits ISU. If you want to argue to keep it because of tradition, prepared to be disappointed bc there is no room for sentimental tradition in the future of college football. I don’t like that one bit, but it’s the hard, real truth unfortunately.
This is a great summary. I think point #5 is the one that most Iowa fans have been exclaiming about for a decade+

I'd like to play the series 2 years on and two years off. Although Iowa should just dominate them every year for an easy win on paper.
This is what I was going to say. Do a home and home then take two years off. It’s still a good rivalry that’s competitive, and it’s good for the state in general. With that said, I am sick of Iowa’s terrible nonconference schedule year after year. It’s just so frigging boring and unimaginative. Directional school, Iowa State, cupcake. Rinse and repeat. Every. Single. Year.

My earliest memory of an Iowa football game was vs. Tennessee in 1987. I just remember my dad having a bunch of people over to the house and how exciting it was. Iowa ended up losing by a point or two, but the experience got me hooked on Iowa football. Today? Pfffft. I can’t remember the last time I was excited to watch a nonconference Iowa game in September.

At least once in a 3-4 season span Iowa should schedule a game against someone good out of the SEC or ACC. Something different.

Can’t say this anymore after Indiana won. Just need the right coach
In retrospect, Indiana should always have been recognized as a potential football power. The largest alumni base in the country. Out of an area with major football talent. They have always had the potential. Just needed the coach. And NIL

Unfortunately, I don't think Iowa will be released from this football purgatory until the Hawks consistently embarrass the Clones year after year to the extent that even their UI-hating alums have had enough. Even Hayden with his long string of beat-downs didn't achieve that. There was just too much money in it for ISU.

Once again, all you people are clamoring to play more power 4 teams in the non-conference when virtually NO ONE else is doing it! Look at other schedules instead of blathering out your ***. Iowa already has a competent power 5 team on their schedule every year.
Penn State is playing Marshall, Temple and Buffalo.
Indiana is playing North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky.
Texas Tech is playing Abilene Christian, Oregon State and Sam Houston.
Alabama is playing Tenn/Chatt, East Carolina and Fla. St.
USC is playing Fresno State, San Jose St. and Louisiana (not LSU)
UCLA is playing Cal, San Diego St, and Nevada
Nebraska is playing Ohio U, North Dakota and Bowling Green.
Arizona is playing Northern Arizona, Northern Ill, and Washington St,
Starting to get the picture?

The list can go on and on. Why in the hell should Iowa put themselves at a competetive disadvasntage when no one else is doing it?
If you think other good, power 4 and 5 football teams are trying to schedule home and home games with Iowa in their non-conference you are out of your mind.

If ISU was off the schedule, Iowa would look for another Power 5 school to play. How easy do you think it is going to be to get another good power five school to come to Kinnick. The ******* playoffs have ruined college football. NO school wants to jeopardize their chance at a playoff spot by possibly losing two games before their conference season even starts.
Conversely, all the schools that have more money than Iowa should mop the floor with them every year, Iowa could very well have beaten Indiana, USC and Oregon in the same season last year No mops involved in any of those games. Nebraska is swimming in cash and loses to Iowa every year.

I would say that this game rips us apart more than it gets us together. The h, ate is real and is not good for our state. I can't tell you how many times I have heard ISU fans say that I don't care if we win another game all year as long as we beat Iowa. It would be healthier for our State if Iowa would start playing a solid team (say Missouri) every year and ISU do the same (lets say Nebraska) Maybe then we could learn to live together in peace and actually learn to root for each other. I would like nothing better than to see ISU beat the hell out of Nebraska every year. (and Iowa do the same to chicken ****, Missouri)
Oh great so playing Drake is the next step. Time to start playing a better schdedule.

The Hotels are full no matter who is in town. But your point is well taken. I’ve never stayed in Ames when I attended the cyhawk. Its only 1.5 hours drive home at most to almost anywhere in the state aside from the QC area.

Lots are filled with Iowa fans that do the 4 or 5 hour (or more) drives to games.

Didn't the SEC recently pass a rule requiring ten P4 games every year? Can't recall when it takes effect. With nine conference games they are going to need non-conference P4 foes.

Bring on Missouri, Kentucky, Vandy because Nashville would be fun. Ole Miss for the Grove and the hotties. Or the ACC, how about a trip to Chapel Hill, or Boston during baseball season?

Or Iowa could just continue to play the clowns every year.

I'm torn on the whole discussion, but lean towards continuing to play every year. Would love to have another big non-conference game on the schedule though.

Maybe when ISU falls to the FCS level, then they can just come to Kinnick every year 😉.

Then we can finally schedule a new non-conference opponent in their place.

Here you go:
ACC: 5 teams
Boston College plays Rutgers and Cinci.
G. Tech plays Colorado and Tenn,
Louisville plays Ole Miss and Kentucky
N. Carolina plays TCU and N. Dame
SMU plays Florida State and N. Dame

Big 12:
Colorado plays N. Western and G. Tech

Big 10:
Purdue plays N. Dame and Wake Forest

SEC:
No teams play more than one other power 4 team in non league.

7 teams out of 68.

None of the Big boys play more than one other power 4 team in their non-conference schedule. Why the hell should Iowa?

I don’t think anyone is “clamoring” for Iowa to play 11 games against P4 opponents. It’s more that many want a different non-conference opponent other than ISU. A vast majority of P4 teams play 10 P4 opponents. You were making it sound like most only play 9 by listing those 8 examples and claiming it was the norm.

Maybe it would be helpful if you provided a link to all these Iowa fans calling for 11 P4 opponents.

Agree with this! Why go out an schedule tough non conference when Indiana, Penn State, Nebraska, Etc. are not playing anyone. Ohio State got dropped lower than Indiana in the polls for losing @ Texas while Indiana hasn't played anyone. The pollsters and CFP do not care about strength of schedule.
