Have there been posts where the folks on the right make excuses as to why oil is high? We've all said we don't like what we pay at the pump, and we don't like some of the things going on.

And yes, it's quite possible the elephants lose a lot in the midterms. Not sure why though, especially when you look at who the donkeys put out there.

But ol Ready, Fire, Aim sure is on top of it now. Atta boy kid

This is well covered territory at this point, but most of us are old enough to remember the Biden years, when high gas prices were not only ignored but lauded. High gas prices are a good thing! People will drive less, start going electric. Now high gas prices are the trigger point for economic Armageddon.

This is the part where we’re told we can’t point out the Left’s hypocrisy because Biden isn’t President anymore. I wonder when a Dem is elected President, if they’ll stop talking about Trump.

How did ignoring gas prices and economic conditions work out for the Democrats in 24?

Not well obviously, but my post wasn’t focused on messaging about the economy, but on Dem inconsistency concerning high gas prices. Due to Trump’s poor handling of the economy, specifically his inflationary tariffs and higher gas prices, the Rep will likely lose the House and the Senate is a tossup from the latest projections

definitely the economic conditions, but to me the gas was from two factors that have been said a zillion times already and efforts were made to attempt to bring them down......current gas and the current ramifications across the economy were all self inflicted by choice

attempts made:
Key Actions Taken
    • Tapped the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR): Announced the historic release of 180 million barrels of oil (1 million barrels per day for six months) in 2022 to serve as a wartime bridge following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Later released an additional 1 million barrels from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve ahead of the Fourth of July. [1, 2, 3]
    • Allowed E15 Summer Sales: Issued emergency waivers and executive actions to allow the sale of E15 gasoline (fuel with 15% ethanol) during the summer months, which normally face seasonal restrictions, lowering prices in certain markets like the Midwest. [1, 2]
    • Called for a Federal Gas Tax Holiday: Urged Congress to suspend the 18-cent-per-gallon federal gas tax and 24-cent diesel tax for 90 days during the summer travel season of 2022. [1]
    • Pressed Oil Companies: Publicly criticized oil executives and refiners for record-breaking profits, accusing them of price gouging and demanding they reinvest profits into increased domestic production and refining capacity. [1, 2]
    • Engaged International Allies: Appealed to OPEC and other major oil-producing nations, including Saudi Arabia, and coordinated with international partners to release tens of millions of additional barrels to stabilize global energy markets. [1, 2]
    • Committed to Refilling the Reserve: Announced plans to purchase crude oil to refill the SPR when prices dropped below $70 per barrel, aiming to provide a price floor that would incentivize domestic producers to keep drilling. [1, 2]

My point is how low information voters perceive these things. They’ll blame whoever is in power, just as they did in 24. As these guys jabber on about culture war nonsense, I like to bring them back to reality.

Your explanation of why gas prices spiked under Biden has always been dead on. Russia invaded Ukraine and caused supply disruptions that raised prices around the world. Add in the fact that global demand was already steadily increasing as the world came out of the pandemic, and you get the prices Biden was demonized for that were largely outside of his control.

The guys in this thread will never acknowledge that, though. They either understand it and know it hurts their talking points, so they won’t admit it, or, in some cases, they genuinely can’t grasp complex systems and don’t understand how any of this works.

Biden had to react to higher oil prices and other prices that were largely outside of his control. Trump caused the higher prices himself. There’s always been a big difference.

Liberals and spinning go hand in hand. Just like peanut butter and jelly. The average price for gas in 2019 was $2.60 a gallon. I think I've read where ol Boogie said the reason it was low in 2020 ($2.19/gallon) was in part due to Covid. So while they're (Fauci and his cronies) are trying to kill us, we get a little more relief at the pump. Thanks. Lil Duckey said gas jumped due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Well that happened in Feb of 22. Gas did jump higher than 21 ($3.01) though, all the way to $3.95. So what's the reason for gas being $3.01 during Ol Joe's first year in office?

The funniest line I've read in a while was the gem by Duckey. "Biden had to react to higher oil prices and other prices that were largely outside of his control."

The only control Biden had for four years was with the remote. Will it be cartoons or a Spider Man movie?

My post was not about the causes of high gas prices then or now, but how Dems have gone from the narrative that gas prices arent even inherently bad ( then) to gas prices are the top voting issue (now). The info you copied is irrelevant to my original post, but very effective if you’re trying to knock down strawmen.

In 2021, the U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline rose from about $2.25 per gallon at the start of the year to $3.28 per gallon by the end of December, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. [1]

Key Details from 2021
    • Starting Price: When Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the national average was roughly $2.39 to $2.42 per gallon, following a dip in demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [1, 2]
    • Milestones: Prices crossed $3.00 per gallon for the first time in mid-May 2021, partly influenced by a temporary shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline. [1]
    • 2021 Average: The overall annual average for 2021 finished at about $3.01 to $3.09 per gallon—the highest nominal yearly average since 2014. [1, 2]
    • Contributing Factors: The general upward trend through 2021 was driven by rebounding global economic activity, higher crude oil prices, and increasing fuel demand as pandemic restrictions eased

The Colonial Pipeline Company shut down its own pipeline on May 7, 2021. [1, 2]

Why the Shutdown Happened
    • Ransomware attack: A criminal hacker group named DarkSide infected the company's business computer systems with malware. [1, 2]
    • Safety precaution: The company stopped all pipeline operations on purpose to keep the computer infection from spreading to the physical controls. [1, 2]
    • Who was responsible: The cyberattack was carried out by DarkSide, a cybercriminal group, but the company itself made the final choice to close the valves and halt the flow of fuel. [1, 2, 3]

The shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline mainly affected consumers and drivers in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States, triggering widespread panic buying and severe gasoline shortages.
Because the pipeline supplies roughly 45% of the East Coast's fuel, the shutdown had a massive ripple effect across several specific groups:

1. Drivers in Specific States
The impact was highly regional. The states that suffered the most severe gas shortages and longest lines at the pump included:
  • North Carolina & South Carolina
  • Virginia
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Tennessee
In many of these states, more than 50% of gas stations completely ran out of fuel due to panic buying.

2. The Airline Industry
Major airports along the East Coast faced immediate fuel supply crunches.
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport had to alter flight schedules.
  • American Airlines was forced to add stops to some of its long-haul routes out of Charlotte to refuel in other states.

3. Colonial Pipeline Company
The company itself suffered major operational and reputational damage. To regain control of their systems quickly, CEO Joseph Blount approved a $4.4 million cryptocurrency ransom payment to the DarkSide hackers shortly after the shutdown.

So what's the reason for gas being $3.01 during Ol Joe's first year in office?
Because the global economy was reopening after COVID. Oil demand came roaring back while production and refining capacity were still recovering from the historic collapse in demand in 2020. That was a global supply and demand problem, not something unique to the United States.

You two obviously haven't read my posts. I have no defense for the high gas price, nor do I like how high it is. I can only hope and pray for it to come down. Unlike you two, I won't spin this.

Once again, they’re choosing their arguments to have, and then pretending we said what’s convenient to their argument. And we’ve already addressed that their argumentation, or in one of their cases copied and pasted talking points, is somewhat flawed. To suggest that the Russian invasion had nothing to do with Biden’s feckless leadership not only suspends logic and common sense, it’s an opinion presented as fact.

You still didn’t answer the question. Why is regular gas $4.22 a gallon and diesel at a record $5.94 a gallon today?

We know why. Or we know what excuse they're giving us. Either way, we're all paying for it.

One side on here has more excuses than Carter had liver pills when 'their team' is in office. The other side shows a little displeasure with the current goings on. This same side learned sometime in the past how corrupt the system is. The other side? If the corporate media told them water isn't wet, they'd believe them.

It's not hard to tell the sides apart either.

Are you really not able to give a straight answer to this? It’s not rocket science. I answered your question, but you seem completely unwilling to answer mine.

You talk about disliking “party politics,” and you’re willing to discuss Biden anytime, anywhere. But when I ask about what’s happening right now, what prices are right now, and why they’re this high, you suddenly can’t give a straight answer.

That seems pretty hypocritical.

First thing. Why is gas high right now? I'll play your silly game lil duckey. Iran.

Here's straight up facts. You guys come up with novels on why it was high during Biden's tenure. Through his entire term, none of it was his fault. That's AMAZING!! You guys also conjure up excuses as to why it was so low under Trump. In 2020. It was because of Covid. None of the 4 year low gas prices though had anything to do with Trump. I gotcha here kid, and you know it.

How's that for you @DuckDevil ?

Iran didn’t start the war that’s led to the rise in gas prices and inflation. Your answer is incorrect.

You asked why gas prices were high during Biden’s first year. The world was reopening after COVID, and demand for oil recovered faster than supply. Gas prices were low during Trump’s final year because much of the world shut down during COVID and demand collapsed. What exactly are you saying is incorrect here?

What point are you trying to make here?
Are you being serious? You’ve asked me why gas prices were high. I entertained your silly game, and answered Iran. I never said Iran started the conflict. Your comeback was to say the top post was incorrect. Make that make sense Then with this bottom post, you ask what point I’m trying to make.
I’m genuinely asking here, are you on any medication? You post like you’re not playing with a full deck at times. These last couple posts of yours suggest that.

It’s pretty simple, really. Iran didn’t cause the high gas prices. Trump did. He’s caused all of this, but you seem incapable of actually saying that out loud. It’s just weird.

Aren't the causes relevant to why any narrative has changed? Or rather, doesn't that make for 2 completely separate narratives instead of some about-face? I mean, I will still maintain that high gas prices under President Biden were more the result of worldwide conditions than anything his administration did or didn't do, whereas high gas prices now can be traced to a single specific, elective, and unpopular choice President Trump made. Even if I were to concede that what was lacking in President Biden's leadership created the conditions that emboldened Russia to invade Ukraine which contributed to supply chain disruptions combined with a worldwide health pandemic that caused high gas prices, look how many different dots there are to connect in order to blame President Biden. Now? President Trump decided to attack Iran. Direct cause and effect.

I don't see the change in narrative you allege as arbitrary, partisan, or contrived, and in that, I don't know that it actually qualifies as a change at all so much as two completely separate narratives about very different causes resulting in the same outcome.

This represents my understanding. It's not an argument. I'm not trying to spin anything. Feel free to add any facts I'm missing here and correct anything I have wrong. I'd rather learn something here than claim some dumb victory.

I’m as upset as the next person about gas prices and prices in general, but Trump closing the border down was huge for the country. Democrats won’t admit it, but if illegal crossings had continued at the same rate for another four years we would be in a much worse position now.

You make fair points, but I’ve never disputed that there’s a more direct link between higher gas prices and Trump than there was with Biden. My objections the last couple of days are twofold: a) during the Biden years the Left as a whole ( not just Biden’s team) downplayed if not mostly ignored the seriousness of high gas prices to the average American, industry, agriculture, etc, and b) to make it worse they disputed often whether or not high gas prices were even a net negative or positive when factoring in environmental concerns . Contrast that tone with the borderline hysterics we see now with near daily price updates on this board as well as msm. If it’s so important now, why wasn’t it important then?
Before anyone gets it bent, I’m not talking the tickers on the business channels lol.

Not a Democrat, but President Trump's handling of illegal immigration specifically and strictly at the border has probably been one of the top 2 things he has done this term, and I don't know what the other thing is. It is probably the weakest thing about President Biden's leadership, though it improved tremendously near the end.

Not sure why you're injecting this into the discussion at this moment. Did something big just happen with that? Seems like a deflection from the discussion of gas prices otherwise.

I don't remember the downplaying you mention, which may be evidence that I, for one, wasn't paying attention, which dovetails in with what you said. I do remember people saying it was a good thing environmentally that people were driving less, but not how gas prices factored into that discussion.

Just spitballin' here... when there isn't a clear place to lay blame and it seems to be something everyone is going through, people often rally and grin and bear it. It's how we came to accept the unprecedented intrusions of the Patriot Act in the wake of THE 9/11, or how the Left, anyway, accepted masks and quarantining during the pandemic. I can't swear that that's even how I was behaving in 2022 because I really just don't remember, but in retrospect, it seems like a reasonable analysis of why people on the Left may have reacted the way you describe.

Now, though, we have a President who included low gas prices in his campaign promises, as well as staying out of wars, who started a war that many have had a hard time understanding, let alone supporting, and the consequences have been felt immediately and intensely at the pump.

I know that's not the only way of looking at it, but that's a context I think explains at least one reason for the different reactions you noticed, as opposed to partisan hypocrisy.

CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC... they have all these 'experts' giving what sounds like logical reasons why gas prices under Biden were high, They can spin it, and spin it beautifully. I mean these are well educated people, from some really fine colleges. They would never lie to us.

Pick a topic, watch one of their stations, then flip over to Fox News. By the way, I'm not defending Fox, but thank God they are there.

When you’ve mired the country in another endless war, driven up the cost of goods and services with your disastrous tariffs, sent gas prices to record highs, exploded the deficit, hit the lowest approval rating of either of your terms, and accomplished nothing legislatively beyond a tax cut for the richest Americans, directly bribing voters is probably your last hope.

What’s a little more inflation going to hurt? What’s another $1.23 trillion on the national debt?
