It seems like the coaches want to do what many on here want...play the guy who is best in games, not practice. So far, they have seen limited or no reps in games. As it stands, they are close in ability based on practice, but that's practice. Since we are trying to win games and not practice, I don't hate the idea of giving game time to both and seeing who stands out.
I’m just saying as a matter of principle there’s no reason a switch can’t be made at anytime.
I have no doubt Kirk has thought through this process and has had many conversations with Lester and whoever else about the starting quarterback. There have been plenty of times throughout Kirk’s tenure at Iowa I thought there’s no possible way the backup quarterback could be any worse only to find out he was indeed worse. If we were all honest with ourselves, I think in nearly 30 years of coaching at Iowa, Ferentz has been right about the best starting quarterback many more times than not. So, the real problem has been too many quarterbacks in his tenure have either not been good or were not good fits for his system, not that Kirk was completely incompetent in choosing a quarterback.
The only thing I fault Kirk for wholeheartedly is the Brian Ferentz experiment as OC. Kirk was never going to be honest about it not working, and how many fathers could? But his refusal to make a change until a new AD stepped in caused me to quit watching Iowa football for most of one season. It was just too unpleasant to watch, and fickle fan or not, my weekends are too valuable to waste 3 and a half hours feeling compelled to gouge my eyes out at dreadfully boring, garbage offense.
By asking out of curiosity for opinions and stating I don’t have one? That’s dramatic to you?
I hope so but I don't want to see another 7-5, 8-4 season from a team with 10-2 talent because the wrong QB was playing.
I assume you haven't been reading the speculation by some posters the last week that if Brown came out the first series there would be fans booing him being the starter?

I figured discussing the starting quarterback now that a decision has been made (at least to who begins the game) would be interesting to many and worth talking about.

Yes. You missed my point. After lots of QB controversies (in the minds of the fans) over KF's tenure, the fans had pretty much settled on Heck for this battle. Brown starts.
I'm not saying Brown didn't earn it, or the coaches made a mistake. Just a commentary on the fans not getting their choice .... again.
I get it, 100%. Its just that "fans" don't have a choice. Its fun conversation and all of that, but in the end I never expect the coaches to be concerned about what the "fans " think. There are fans on here who actually think their opinion has, or should have some sway in what the coaches do. I guess I put you in that group, so I apologize if that's not the case. Frankly to me what happened in 2008 or whenever has no bearing on the current situation. We went out (finally) and hired an OC with a solid background in both college and the pro game in the modern offense. He's the guy who brought in both QB's and the young guys behind them, and I think he;s the one making this call.
I am not in the camp of fans participating in decision making. I believe the coaches need to make the call and the fans need to live with it - or simply complain.
But, engaged fans are going to second guess, and that's ok too.
At least for game 1, the coaches were right. Brown looked better.
Agree. I think Brown looked more consistent in the offense, and yes, he missed a couple of plays. Heck made a few plays, but you can also see him being a bit more reckless with the ball, and he missed a couple of guys for big plays as well. Both guys showed they can move around a bit and go get a first down with their legs if needed.
