Ca subway system is already a disaster. Financially and otherwise. The grift is incredible. Almost as much as the billions spent so far on the bridge to nowhere. Shouldn't be surprise. Ca has proven to be one big grift state.

Hope the rest of the country doesn't mind the bailout that's coming.

The train to nowhere defies description. At least the Big Dig was completed and functioned.

Online article in the WSJ (paywall) talks about a big increase in private colleges tapping a higher percentage of their endowments for operating expenses than in the past. In a few cases they have tapped restricted endowments without the donor's (or the state if the donor is deceased) permission, which is a major problem. And the issue now arises on what happens to restricted endowments if the school folds.

You mean like the $25B given to CA during covidiocy to fight homelessness? That worked out superty duper well didn’t it? There better not be a bailout. CA should be allowed to drown in its self-made disaster. PERIOD.

Of course this is the state that gave is that imbecile Harris (whose talents lie outside of politics and the law) their oil slick gov and a clueless LA mayor likely to win reelection.

There will most certainly be a bailout of Ca. It will be filed under “too big to fail”.

They will do studies in the future of the failure that is Ca. It’s of epic proportion.

CA is the largest contributor to federal revenue. Almost doubled the next largest, Texas.
It should be. Imagine having DC, Md, De,, all of Pa, NJ, NY through all of New England as one state. Comp of value are leaving en mass is wealth. It’s comical to see Hair Gel take credit for all that came before him. He’s been an abject failure at every level. Everyone here hates him. Even libbos

That's only half the equation.

It's also the 4th largest economy in the world alone. And has 2 of the top 5 public colleges in the country. And a sizeable bunch of the top 20.

You have to spend money to make money.

Though probably it's less lopsided than NJ in terms of money to the feds and money we get back versus the welfare queen states of the South.

Best STEM Universities in each region. MIT is a no brainer for the Northeast of course. Guessing that's Carnegie Mellon in the Mid Atlantic? Michigan is excellent but I bet Purdue is like 1A for STEM in the Midwest. And Colorado being best overall public university and in STEM tells me that colleges are pretty weak academically in the Mountain time zone lol.

Purdue and Michigan are probably tied as their respective STEM align to different areas of focus. I do however, think Purdue is poised to leap ahead with their focused quantum and ai stuff. michigan is focused less there and on biomed angle. honestly think it depends on what you want, both are outstanding elite stem schools and I hate saying Michigan is good at anything

one of my former kids, brilliant and athletic with offers to play d1 ball opted for Purdue to study quantum nano photonics stuff at Birk (I'm not smart enough to really describe it lol). This is the top research lab for this stuff on any campus in the BIG and #10 globally.

Mid-Atlantic is the same between Carnegie Mellon and Hopkins with Hopkins going the Michigan route and Carnegie more robotics and CS. Totally agree on your point about the mountain zone but Colorado does some things well enough to be highly regarded in some fields.

GT is another one that is exceptional

GT could easily rival UNC and UF as best academic public in the South. Fantastic school in a growing city in Atlanta.

100%,
one of the most overlooked stats is the number of top 25 under/grad programs. I think this should lead to the overall ranking more heavily than the alumni contributions, acceptance rate (state schools at a huge disadvantage here) and some of the other metrics. when you look at this statistic, it's mind blowing to see who really is elite, very good, mid

I have always advocated 1) RU Stadium should have concerts 2) there should be a light rail in NB (and you extend it down Ryders into EB, into Pway/Somerset so you get local pol buy in).

We actually have a great light rail already in the HBLR in Hudson County that reminds me a lot of what San Diego has. Here the NIMBYs kept it out of Bergen County though that may be changing.

It takes will though, someone has to come in and say we are doing this come hell or high water. Credit to Californians, even with such a car culture they managed to get the light rail in SD that goes all the way to the border and they actively expanded the LA subway. Here despite having the most expansive public transit by US standards (so bad globally) people still recoil at making it better when it would benefit not only RU but the whole region.
Concert idea being floated at Berkeley

Who remembers SI’s “This week’s sign that the apocalypse is upon us?”

Are those coaches for boys rushing to land a sorority girl? That came from an account named Short Squeez, so just guessing. . .

But there are Redditt threads that are much cheaper than paying a coach.

I read only the first line and thought "I bet it's only dbags from NJ paying for this" and there you go.

I have lived in the tri state area my whole life. And this is the dumbest and most inexplicable phenomenon to date. It was bad enough when the kids I went to HS with wanted to go to Cult to be with more like-looking people. Now Gen Z needs that at even lesser schools with bought friends.

Total barf bag.

At least employers now know more than ever that RU alums are the cream of the crop. Not only are the academics 10x that of most of the SEC, but it's kids who were actually taught the value of a dollar by their parents.

The cost of health benefits is spiraling out of control- when are politicians going to do something about it? Same for utilities.

MIDDLETOWN -- Brookdale Community College leaders are preparing to lay off staff to combat rising costs and long-term declines in enrollment, college President David M. Stout confirmed Wednesday, Aug. 26,

The college's cost for employee health benefits increased by $11 million in 2025 to $17.7 million in 2026, Stout said through a college spokesperson. The expense is projected to reach $24.3 million in the next fiscal year, he said.

"This decision comes after months of careful financial analysis and sustained efforts to reduce expenses while protecting our academic mission, student services and long-term financial stability," the college president said in a statement. "Unfortunately, the financial challenges facing colleges and universities across New Jersey are also affecting Brookdale. These financial challenges require us to make difficult decisions now to ensure that the College remains strong and able to serve our students and community well into the future."

"While enrollment has recovered somewhat since the pandemic, it remains nearly 6% below pre-pandemic levels," Stout said. "At the same time, the cost of operating the College has increased substantially faster than enrollment. Since FY (fiscal year) 2020, utility costs have risen nearly 90%, while employee health benefit costs have increased by more than 33%."

A county college in Monmouth County is bracing for a restructuring that will include layoffs, school officials said.

Brookdale Community College is grappling with rising costs for utilities and employees' health benefits while enrollment remains lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, according to the college's board of trustees.

The board approved a resolution on Tuesday that authorizes college president David Stout to develop a plan to reduce jobs and restructure the college.

Do they really need 4 satellite locations, with the 4th yet to open?

Syracuse smackdown the top story on wsj.com this morning. Article is behind paywall.

Athletics pointed out in what I'm sure Syracuse people view as a hit piece:

"At Syracuse, that [enrollment] volatility has been magnified by the decline in its sports programs—historically an important factor in drawing students to a campus.

'Syracuse’s men’s basketball team, a perennial powerhouse that won the NCAA tournament in 2003 and reached the Final Four in 2013 and 2016, has failed to earn a bid in the tournament for the past five seasons, depriving the university of national exposure.

The football team, once a heavyweight, has had more losing seasons than winning ones since the turn of the century."

just a thought but maybe community colleges shouldn't be investing in athletics and the like and focus more on the mission

also, the bloat in educational services provided at this level is off the charts to my earlier point:)

Can't say I would've chosen BU over UNC and Michigan.

hell no, not by any stretch
He did say something about size of the student body mattered, and that makes sense. Our youngest quickly eliminated Rutgers for that reason, and chose a much smaller private school in Connecticut that is not as "prestigious" but very solid in the chosen major and generally in that area-health sciences. IDGAS about how jobs are plentiful in the area. The experience there has been phenomenal, and would not have been matched at Rutgers, in our humble opinion.

Similar situation with my oldest kid who moves into Fairfield next week. I brought him to College Ave campus and downtown New Brunswick many times. He had no interest. With merit scholarship at Fairfield, it is less than Rutgers in-state and SUNY, as long as GPA is >2.8. That will be easy for him.

Kid is very in tune with the situation on college campuses and wanted somewhere with a moderate to conservative environment which most Catholic schools have.

Trade off is the course offering is much bigger at Rutgers, maybe the biggest in the Northeast. I will pitch this prospective students, many of them undecided on majors, if Rutgers ever gets back to me on running a Rutgers table at Long Island college fairs.

LOL, wish Fairfield was on our list. Ours was Quinnipiac- forgot how much the discount was, but definitely not cheaper than Rutgers. Our refers to Quinnipiac as the school a lot of kids from Long Island and NJ go to after getting rejected by the NESCAC shoools, BC, BU and Northeastern. The campus is beautiful, classes are small, and as a health science major, got to do some cool things like get involved in Astronomy, and got to go to a couple of astronomy conferences. Also had a great public health fellowship in South America Junior Year and a semester abroad in Spain. Would those things have been available at Rutgers? IDK, and don't care, the kid is very happy and did great. Finishing up master's this year and then off to work.
