OT: College enrollment and financial issues?

Ca subway system is already a disaster. Financially and otherwise. The grift is incredible. Almost as much as the billions spent so far on the bridge to nowhere. Shouldn't be surprise. Ca has proven to be one big grift state.

Hope the rest of the country doesn't mind the bailout that's coming.

Online article in the WSJ (paywall) talks about a big increase in private colleges tapping a higher percentage of their endowments for operating expenses than in the past. In a few cases they have tapped restricted endowments without the donor's (or the state if the donor is deceased) permission, which is a major problem. And the issue now arises on what happens to restricted endowments if the school folds.

It's also the 4th largest economy in the world alone. And has 2 of the top 5 public colleges in the country. And a sizeable bunch of the top 20.

You have to spend money to make money.

Though probably it's less lopsided than NJ in terms of money to the feds and money we get back versus the welfare queen states of the South.

Best STEM Universities in each region. MIT is a no brainer for the Northeast of course. Guessing that's Carnegie Mellon in the Mid Atlantic? Michigan is excellent but I bet Purdue is like 1A for STEM in the Midwest. And Colorado being best overall public university and in STEM tells me that colleges are pretty weak academically in the Mountain time zone lol.

Purdue and Michigan are probably tied as their respective STEM align to different areas of focus. I do however, think Purdue is poised to leap ahead with their focused quantum and ai stuff. michigan is focused less there and on biomed angle. honestly think it depends on what you want, both are outstanding elite stem schools and I hate saying Michigan is good at anything

one of my former kids, brilliant and athletic with offers to play d1 ball opted for Purdue to study quantum nano photonics stuff at Birk (I'm not smart enough to really describe it lol). This is the top research lab for this stuff on any campus in the BIG and #10 globally.

Mid-Atlantic is the same between Carnegie Mellon and Hopkins with Hopkins going the Michigan route and Carnegie more robotics and CS. Totally agree on your point about the mountain zone but Colorado does some things well enough to be highly regarded in some fields.

one of the most overlooked stats is the number of top 25 under/grad programs. I think this should lead to the overall ranking more heavily than the alumni contributions, acceptance rate (state schools at a huge disadvantage here) and some of the other metrics. when you look at this statistic, it's mind blowing to see who really is elite, very good, mid

GT has been ahead of UF forever. And well ahead of UNC in STEM, Had relatives attend and graduate from both.

I have always advocated 1) RU Stadium should have concerts 2) there should be a light rail in NB (and you extend it down Ryders into EB, into Pway/Somerset so you get local pol buy in).

We actually have a great light rail already in the HBLR in Hudson County that reminds me a lot of what San Diego has. Here the NIMBYs kept it out of Bergen County though that may be changing.

It takes will though, someone has to come in and say we are doing this come hell or high water. Credit to Californians, even with such a car culture they managed to get the light rail in SD that goes all the way to the border and they actively expanded the LA subway. Here despite having the most expansive public transit by US standards (so bad globally) people still recoil at making it better when it would benefit not only RU but the whole region.

Concert idea being floated at Berkeley
