GT/Tulane/SEC

Before my time as well, but if I remember correctly, Georgia Tech football coach, Boyd or Dodd, was also athletic Director. He opposed the SEC rule limiting football and basketball scholarships. Because they didn’t get their way they left the SEC. GT was an independent for 10 or 12 years before possibly joining the metro???
I know they tried to rejoin the SEC in 1978 but didn’t get approval. Shortly there after they joined the ACC.
Tulane was having problems keeping up with the SEC big boys in football spending. The university president decided to leave the SEC and scale back sports spending. They intended to focus on academics. In 1988 they tried to rejoin the SEC but were turned down. Some people credit Tulane’s attempt to rejoin the SEC for sparking interest in expansion. Which led to South Carolina and Arkansas joining the league in the early 90s.

I remember when GT had Travis Best and it briefly looked like maybe they were going to be something besides a whipping boy.
