How has Canada been fair with their tarrifs? Your use of the words "picking a fight" says it all.

The feds already have a law restricting participation in federal elections. They cannot "stay out" of elections if they are already in.

Most of the people screaming for the feds to "stay out" now dont even know that.

I realize this won't matter to you - but- and I saw this posted today by a Conservative - (in bold)

A big reason for the trade imbalance is we were buying oil at below market rates from Canada.

We had a sweet heart deal. Take oil imports out of it and we actually have a trade surplus. This thing with Canada is moronic and too many people are falling into line with Trump's misunderstanding of the trade issue with Canada.

Also, economist Stephen Moore- who was an advisor to Trump in his first term- said he thought this was the wrong move and not helpful.

I also read Steve Forbes went on Fox Business and blasted the tariffs.

So, it will be interesting.

Trump loves to play toy soldier behind the lines. The Republican party needs to jettison Trump and his thugs.

From what I have seen, about ⅓ of the products you'll find in the bakery section in your average Walmart come from Canada.

if you buy soap, most of it is made in Canada or comes from Canadian products- including raw materials in clothes detergents. Paper products, many different types of product wrapping including food wrapping material comes from canada too. It's just an overall upward push on prices for basic, everyday staples.

Both sides are accusing the other of backing away at the last minute. Our side has been very short on details though.

The Canadian trade negotiator stated that the US side introduced a last-minute requirement that the US has to approve any other trade deals Canada reaches with other countries, which of course was an obvious deal killer. No country is going to agree to that. The United States certainly wouldn't. I tend to believe that report given Trump has said, quite angrily many times, that Canada is making trade deals with other countries. Well, of course they are. We make trade deals with other countries too.

my sense is Trump wanted to pick a fight and made sure it turned into a fight to rally his base for the mid-terms. That's why the super quick decision to rename the lake. He knows most of his supporters aren't going to get into the weeds of a trade deal. He also knows that his supporters won't even care if it hurts their pocketbooks because they support him above everything. But he also knows his supporters will eat up a ludicrous fight about the naming of a lake.

The bad part about this for American consumers in the long run is Canada has already said that the long term partnership in trade with the United States is changed and won't be the same. They've already started looking elsewhere. The problem is, as the Canadian PM said, the American side has become an unreliable partner that they can't trust, given during the first Trump administration they reached what was supposed to be a long term trade deal that Trump has already killed.

They've learned better than most that Trump can't be trusted on such matters and will change his mind at the drop of a hat, based on the last online influencer or talk show host that he talked to.
