My wife got me a round at Sawgrass for my 50th. Has anyone played? Any suggestions for caddies vs riding. I’ve played that course over a thousand times on Tiger Woods golf so I know the layout by heart. Just gonna suck not being able to power boost 400 yard drives.

Google nonsanctioned golf drivers? **

Seriously though, that’s nice. I don’t golf but that’s a beautiful course…

Staying at the Marriott. Playing Stadium Saturday and Dye’s Valley Sunday. Do we need to reserve caddies ahead of time if we walk. I think it’s cartpath only and honestly would like to walk the Stadium course. From what I read online. Whatever cash you plan on bringing, double it.

Grok say:

Yes — this is TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course Saturday + Dye’s Valley Sunday). Perfect setup with the Marriott (Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa is right next door).

Walking / Caddies

Stadium Course is always cart-path only. Riding means a lot of zigzagging from path to ball. Walking is the much better experience if you’re up for it.

You cannot walk and carry your own bag as a visitor. You have to take a walking caddie:

  • Reserve at least 48 hours ahead by calling (904) 273-3430.
  • If your tee time already includes a forecaddie (it does with the green fee), the upgrade is:
    • Single premium caddie (one bag): $130
    • Double-bag caddie (one guy carrying two bags): $85 per player (available Sept–May)

Suggested minimum cash tip: $50 per golfer for a walking caddie ($40 per golfer for a regular forecaddie if you ride).

Dye’s Valley is more flexible — carts can sometimes go on the fairways depending on conditions.

Cash advice

He’s right — double whatever you were planning. Between green fees (Stadium starts around $550–$775+ depending on season, Dye’s Valley cheaper), caddie upgrades + tips, range balls, food/drinks, pro shop merch, and the inevitable balls you’ll leave in the water on 17, it adds up fast. Bring plenty of cash for the caddies and tips.

Quick tips

  • The Marriott golf shop can help with bookings if needed: (904) 273-8146.
  • Caddies at Sawgrass are excellent — use them. Listen on the greens and especially around the island green.
  • Course is very walkable; a lot of people say walking Stadium is the way to do it.

Have a blast and bring extra balls for 17. Hail State.

I live in Jax, but have never played Sawgrass...Had an opportunity one time for $200 and passed on it, and have regretted it ever since. I will say that I know several people who play it "regularly" and they always tell me that the Dyess course is the harder of the two, so be prepared for that. If you have down time and want to play a normal course let me know and I can host you at Deer Creek in the Mandarin area (about 25 minutes away).

Man I wish. We are cruising over from the panhandle getting there at 5 Friday and headed back Sunday after the round at Dye’s Valley. Rain check for the Gator Bowl this year**

Is your wife going? If so there’s a good chance she bought herself a spa weekend for your birthday.

That’s going to be an awesome trip. My brother was supposed to get married near there and the groomsmen were going to play Sawgrass the day before…then covid messed everything up. Thanks Fauci.

My family stayed at The Marriott Sawgrass for all 3 Gator Bowl trips. It was the team hotel. My brother & I played The Stadium Course on New Year's Eve prior to the Michigan game on New Year's Day 2011. It was an incredible experience. We had an early tee time 7:00 AMish. They paired us with a father & son. The was 12-13 and playing in a Junior Tournament there the next day. We had a forecaddie for the group. The forecaddie did a great job. Maybe the height of MSU fandom playing The Stadium Course one day & watching MSU football kick that Michigan *** in a traditional New Year's Day bowl the next.

They usually have plenty and they require a fore caddy for every group there

She is but so is a friend. We have played Sawgrass since PS1 on consoles and have always wanted to play to it for real for 30 years. From Tigers amateur, to Freddie’s hole in 3, to Hall Sutton “be the club toddy!” It’s always been a course we wanted to play. So the girls can spend whatever they want on the spa during that 5 hour period.

I played it in 2011. It was incredibly tough, obviously. We drove the course in carts without caddies and got around just fine. The rough was way deeper than expected and very unforgiving.

I did land on the island green on my first shot, but it bounced off and in the water, for those (no one) curious at home.

I did par 18, however... looking back, I'm not sure how I pulled that off. When I consistently played golf (this is more than a decade ago before kids) I had a natural fade/slice off the tee. And that hole does not play well with that characteristic.

Going from memory, but 18 doglegs left around the lake, right?

Yes. Big, long dogleg left around the lake. All water on the left side. Super narrow fairway with some unforgiving rough/trees on the right. I somehow hit the fairway and then hit a long iron on the green. I was not the kind of golfer who uses par and long iron together in the same sentence very often.
