I stopped paying attention after Jr retired or left. Until there is a mechanism for real competition in MLB, there is not much point to follow. Some mid market teams sneak in every once in a while but they are managed completely differently than the Red machine
Yep. Owners have to demand a salary cap like the NFL, NBA, and NHL has. And if it means the players sit out for years until giving in, so be it. It has to be done.
Not only a salary cap but a salary floor. Too many owners buying teams to watch them rot while getting paid by the luxury taxes from big spenders.
I’ve watched them win 1 World Series at least.

Co pilot says Reds are 20th in team salary. My Cards are 24th. Fans called our last GM Moron. Owner DeWitt is called Dimwit and fans think his interest is in Ball Park Village, not the team. He did hire Claire Bloom for the rebuild though, so we are hoping.
Elly brought me back in but it's demoralizing seeing us waste him. He is probably just counting the days until he can leave for the Dodgers or Yankees.

Don’t worry OP. You may get your wish eventually. Castellini has already threatened it before. I’m sure everyone will be happier when you go from having a low-hope baseball franchise with 162 games of middling to bad content to having zero hope and 0 games of any content to watch at all. Reds fans will celebrate when the franchise is archived into the annals of history and lost in the sands of time.
Absolutely. Should be a minimum and a maximum, and that number shouldn’t be too far apart.
Elly strikes out too much and never hits good pitching. He also led the league in errors last season. He’s not stealing bases this year nearly as much as he had in his first couple of years, which is what made him stand out. I love his attitude and enthusiasm, but honestly, they can lose the same without him.
The biggest problem is Greene and Lodolo are rarely healthy. The Reds hitters strikeout at an alarming rate. Their batting averages are almost always near the bottom of the league. Francona is atrocious. He makes Bell look like a genius. He never tries to manufacture a run. He pulls pitchers after ridiculously low pitch totals. He’s so effing awful.
It’s not just the investment in player salaries. Teams like the Dodgers and Brewers invest heavily in player development. That’s why the Dodgers have so many prospects in the top 100.
They basically bought out his remaining arbitration yrs and added a year more of control. He gets more now and will have to wait 1yr to get a crazy free agency check.
So what are your thoughts on trading Greene? I'm kinda indifferent.
On one hand you can fill the many holes your team has and you still have some decent pitchers on staff. Greene is either injury prone or doing load management to save his arm for his next team. He frustrates me more than excites me at this point.
On the other hand, prospects are never a sure thing. We got a haul for Castillo and haven't been able to develop them. And trading a top tier player with a controllable contract for top prospects hoping to get a top tier player with a controllable contract doesn't seem to make a lot of since.
As a White Sox fan I'd like to nominate a contender for that role. We have 3rd smallest payroll in baseball, which amounts to about $44 million less than the Reds. Under Jerry Reinsdorf, there has been nothing but retool after retool after retool. Reinsdorf was the leader of the pack back in 1994's baseball strike, orchestrating a strike when the White Sox had one of the best rosters in its history. He torpedoed his own team essentially. Not only that, but he's the same moron that chose Jerry Krause over Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan going for a 7th title in the late 1990s.

I'm not paying for MLB or whatever it is to get to watch them. Reds are so poorly run. They obviously are really serious about winning.
At 65 I am aware that I have witnessed my last Red's World Series. I grew up in a huge baseball family and knew every player on every team. Now I look at a boxscore and say who is that.
Not sure it would do you any good if you did. I’ve got MLB and can’t watch the Reds or Cards games.
On a brief but brighter note….i enjoyed watching last nights game against Pittsburgh. Always good to beat the Bucs.

They have one of if not the cheapest owners in all of pro sports. They need to sell them to a group who wants to compete.
Agreed, this is the season to do it. The owners better lock in and get a cap done. The Dodgers will never cease to be a World Series contender ever without one. They will literally buy the best team yearly no matter the cost, and they have a deep farm system. It’s not even close to fair.

We attend a game or 2 during the Dodger series in Cincy. Spouse is a born Dodger fans. The Great American Ball Park is a decent baseball stadium. It's not unusual for Dodger fans to nearly equal Reds fans at those games. Stunning how well Dodger fans travel. Of course, every Japanese or Japanese American fan within hundreds of miles attend or more Dodgers games. Literally, Japanese fans from Japan travel to Dodgers games.
Agreed. Branch Ricky when he worked for the Cards was the first to be smart enough to set up their own farm system. Before that minor league teams were independently owned and MLB teams had to buy players from them. The richest teams got the best players. The Cards set up their own minor league teams and the system was working great as the Cards became consistent contenders. Commissioner Landis said this gave the Cards an unfair advantage and made the Cards release a number of players so other teams could sign them. The current Dodger situation is an unfair advantage if you want real competition.

We’ve seen so many of the greatest of the greatest … at all levels I believe baseball interest is at the lowest level in my life, and I truly don’t understand how these salaries are afforded in the long term. But I digress …
I’ve been thru the Marge Schott years (she was quite the personality). I don’t begrudge the Dodgers or the Yankees … overcoming those odds are part of the lure. There are “small” market teams that manage to compete, and to start the season we were not far off IMO. I’m not surprised at Geno’s season, but can any of us remember who we got when we first let him go??? I can’t

Talk about hitting heights and then the depths …and Aaron Judge starts the season just killing it, and now hasn’t played in months … batting averages are down … we really got a lot of great pitchers out there right now … Misiorowski Cease, Skenes, Sale, so many others, including my boy Chase Burns!!! And for us fans, we have and are witnessing one of the most unique talents in MLB history with ShoheI … hell, him alone kinda makes you like the dodgers
