It is depressing to hear all the people say things like "what kind of teenager is going to leave his phone on the boat". Aside from the idiocy of expecting somebody to carry around a phone in salt water all day, the answer is a healthy teenager. If you are on a white sand beach and you already have a dozen or two of your friends with you, and you have cold drinks and music plus women, what kind of degenerate do you have to be to think, "the only thing that could make this better is if I was looking at my phone." I get that a lot of people are that addicted and I feel bad for them, but I have a lot less sympathy when they pretend to not even imagine anybody making better choices, as if they have zero blame for their dependency.

Was at the beach this weekend. It was so bright you couldn’t see the screen so it was pretty much useless except for playing music. Then it eventually overheat and shut down. These clueless Racist 17ers wear hoodies and backpacks to the beach and have never set foot on a boat but that doesn’t stop them from fueling victimness

this is all being posed by people who clearly have never boated. geeez, everybody puts their phones in ziplock bags and leaves them in a lock box or a console for the day so they don't get wet, lost. or stolen.

I'm definitely not an experienced ocean swimmer. About 25–26 years ago, I decided to try boogie boarding for the first time in some pretty big surf. One wave absolutely hammered me, drove me into the bottom, flipped me around, and left me completely disoriented. It scared the hell out of me. I swallowed a lot of water, and it made me realize just how fast things can go bad in the ocean.

Same. What some eternal victims don’t understand that in the Deep South and especially OS there is no race segregation. These kids have been integrated since birth….they don’t see color. I see it in my boys on the ball field. They only know race when some old racist aszhole brings it up

same with my son who just finished his freshman year at State rooming with a friend who is black. my biggest beef with this situation is that it is creating more racisim within this young generation that did not exist prior to this event. some of the black community has taken hold of the victim mentality and have openly called some of my son's friends "killer", etc. this is happening to white kids who were not even at Horne Island and did not even know Nolan personally. I think Nolan would be upset the black community is criminilizing his friends and other white kids his age. it's all hate. it's really sad.

This whole story bothers me for a variety of reasons. Obviously the most tragic part is that a young man who by all accounts was a great person, is gone. But the parents have done a lot of damage to that community, and our state as a whole.

Two things can be true at the same time. Yes, Mississippi has a terribly racist past. But in my opinion, there’s no place in the country where race relations are better, present-day. My kids are bi-racial. My wife is Mexican/Italian, but more Mexican than Italian. As a result, our kids, who are beautiful, have a very distinct look. My wife was a little concerned when we moved to South MS. And do you know how they’ve been treated? NOT ONE DAMN BIT DIFFERENT. The younger generations in this state truly do not see color.

Yes, there are some people who are racist, but they are few and far between. The only negative experience we’ve had occurred a couple years ago. My wife was shopping in a local boutique clothing store. Now keep in mind that my wife is definitely darker-skinned, but is an incredibly well-dressed, classy woman. At 40, she still turns heads.

Anyway, we’re in the store and my wife whispers to me, “The store clerks won’t leave me alone. They’re following me everywhere like I’m going to steal something.” I told her I was sure that wasn’t the case, and that I was sure they were just trying to be helpful. However, the more I observed, the more I was sure that my wife was 100% right. I was pissed.

So I loudly asked my wife if she had found anything she liked, and she shook her head “no.” So I loudly stated, “All this stuff looks cheap and tacky. If I’m going to spend a couple thousand dollars somewhere, I want better quality. Let’s go somewhere else.” The look on those biddies’ faces was priceless.
The problem here is the officials you are asking those parents to just trust, arent today's teenagers. They're Boomers. They're the biddies you had a problem with at the store. Its entirely understandable for these parents to not just 100% trust the police in this situation, and turn to outside help for some assurance of a proper investigation. I dont think theyre getting that with Crump, but it's not hard at all to understand why they wouldn't trust the police, and those that state out loud that they just dont get it are only showing their own ignorance and lack of empathy.

Not trusting police is not good reason to sit by (if not encourage) while your son's friends are getting death threats or to claim that they are not their friends because you don't know them, despite them being in pictures together and clearly being friends. They have apparently accused them of deleting stuff from Nolan's phone with zero evidence. They are unfortunately being just horrible human beings at this point. Maybe they are grief stricken, but lots of parents lose children with out encouraging lynch mobs to go after their deceased child's friends. You can point to drownings in this state where grieving parents have not acted this way.

ETA: And it's not like they waited for something unsatisfactory to happen. There was all sorts of support from the community and no indication that anything was not being done properly that they have offered. They made it a spectacle and introduced hate into the situation with no justification that they have publicly offered.

Thats probably true, but besides my point.

Lynch mobs is certainly way too far (if thats true), but these guys took him out there then left him out there, where he died. Thats not criminal, but I sure would have ill feelings towards them if it were my child.

If you catch a ride to a place on someone’s boat and then refuse the ride back when they tell you they’re leaving (for good reason with a balky bilge pump).

Then the responsibility is yours (Nolan’s in this case). There is little reason to believe this is not what happened as multiple people at that island have confirmed the story.

Soft disagree. You take someone, anyone let alone a friend, to somewhere they cant get back from on their own, then you have at least some responsibility to see that they get back. More so if theyre drinking.

I see where you're coming from, and agree with it in a everyone-for-themself/SOL view of the world that I often have. But in a more compassionate view of the world, his friends have some more responsibility to him than that.

It is possible that they didn't do anything wrong but still didnt do enough.

That is an ignorant framing. Not in the pejorative sense, but in the literal, lack of relevant knowledge sense. I have been to Horn on one boat and come back by another. The people that took me to Horn did not "leave me out there". I chose to get a ride with a different boat. They did not check with the captain of the other boat to make sure they were aware I was needing a ride with them. That was my responsibility before telling them I wouldn't be riding back with them.

Think about how much more common that is for people that live on the coast and grew up there. They likely have several options on any reasonably busy day. That probably helped contribute to his death. He was too lax and did not immediately get somebody to confirm they would not leave without him. It possibly wouldn't have mattered. There's a pretty good chance he drowned before whatever boat he was planning on catching a ride with left, but in the event they left before he drowned, somebody knowing that he was counting on them to get home very likely would have saved his life.

Perfectly understandable for the parents to be angry in their grief. But that's not an excuse to be a horrible human being. They should have had the decency to state that they had no reason to suspect any of his friends. Instead they claim they deleted things from his phone and all but sent the mob their way.

No, it's just that you are having trouble seeing any view but your own as plausible or legitimate.

Imagine it was your 18 yo kid that you booted out there. Or younger. Do you feel you'd have no responsibility the second they said "I'll just catch a ride with someone else" and walked off? Why wouldn't his friends also have some responsibility?

Im sure they feel the kids were acting suspicious. They probably were, im sure all of them were doing things they dont want their parents to know about.

Why? Im not speaking to anything other than in general discussion of how people should act.

Thanks for acknowledging you didn’t watch it. Watching the video would give you a lot of context about what was typical for that group of friends heading out to the island and what the specifics were that day.

For example, you’d realize that there was a large group of friends, including Nolan, who met and went out for the day on three different boats from the same spot. And this was something they had done many times before.

You really should watch it, unless you’ve just made up your mind.

It's just having facts and understanding of the situation at hand. There are lots of places where you take somebody out on a boat and you don't leave without them. Horn on the 4th of July for locals is not like that. It's more equivalent to the redneck parties we went to in high school growing up. People catch rides to and from with different people. It would be great if there was an ironclad buddy system where everybody kept tabs on each other, but it happens thousands of times with no ill effects, so naturally teenagers get lax. Hell, we lost somebody at an out of town bar when we were out of college. He left without telling anybody and everybody catching cabs back to the hotel thought he was with somebody else from the group. It would not have been reasonable to call any of us murderers if he had not showed up the next morning.

Imagine it was your 18 yo kid that you booted out there. Or younger. Do you feel you'd have no responsibility the second they said "I'll just catch a ride with someone else" and walked off? Why wouldn't his friends also have some responsibility?
If we were talking about somebody leaving their kids or their kids' friend out there, that would be a really good point.

But they are his friends, not his parents. There are a hundreds of boats out there and probably a dozen with people they know on them in a close vicinity. It would be great if teenagers and young adults acted were buttoned up to the point that they kept tabs on each other, but that's just not the way they operate, particularly at a place that feels safe, which Horn and local bars and hangouts typically do. At worst, they were slightly irresponsible, but still less irresponsible than Nolan. That's not worthy of death threats and does not justify the Wonsley's behavior.

Again, its possible they didnt do anything wrong, but didnt do enough.

Im sure they feel the kids were acting suspicious. They probably were, im sure all of them were doing things they dont want their parents to know about.
And none of that justifies the Wonsley's behavior either.

I think you’re trying way too hard to be contrarian here. Like someone else said, you should watch the video. The video says there was 30 friends that went out on 3 different boats. One of the 3 left and left in what sounds like a bit of an emergency situation and they tried to get Nolan to get on the boat (according to the video).

I’m just not sure what else the boys could have done. Tried to get Nolan to come, he didn’t want to and there was no reason to think that Nolan wouldn’t get a ride back with one of the other 2 boats. It seems to me they had 2 options… drag Nolan on the boat or wait till he was ready to leave risking the possibility of the boat not being able to make it back.

no. Im really not saying any difficult or conrroversial. You just have a problem apparently in accepting theres another way to look at it that is completely valid. Youve been radicalized on this.

Funny, thats exactly what im thinking of.
People catch rides to and from with different people. It would be great if there was an ironclad buddy system where everybody kept tabs on each other, but it happens thousands of times with no ill effects, so naturally teenagers get lax.
What do you mean, get lax? Get lax from what? You're saying theres no responsibility there whatsoever. Which therefore means theres nothing to get lax on.
Hell, we lost somebody at an out of town bar when we were out of college. He left without telling anybody and everybody catching cabs back to the hotel thought he was with somebody else from the group.
Yep. Its happened to me on both sides.
It would not have been reasonable to call any of us murderers if he had not showed up the next morning.

It is a really good point.
But they are his friends, not his parents.
I was not aware that friendship carried absolutely zero responsibilities.
There are a hundreds of boats out there and probably a dozen with people they know on them in a close vicinity.
Same thing applies if it was someone's 15 yo kid.
It would be great if teenagers and young adults acted were buttoned up to the point that they kept tabs on each other, but that's just not the way they operate, particularly at a place that feels safe, which Horn and local bars and hangouts typically do.
oh, its ok to do irresponsible things if it "feels" safe? Vibes based responsibilities?
At worst, they were slightly irresponsible, but still less irresponsible than Nolan.
hes starting to get it!
That's not worthy of death threats and does not justify the Wonsley's behavior.
Agreed (taking your accounts of their behavior as correct)

What they did is entirely reasonable. But they also could have done more. Remember that all i said was, if it were my kid, i would have ill feelings. But since that gives some amount of humaniation to the parents rather than casting them as reverse-racist monsters, drew the ire of a few.

Or take a little more responsibility and check in with their other friends on other boats to check up on him. Whoever owned that boat that took him out there had a little more responsibility, imo, than "he's on his own now". Im very disappointed that thats even controversial.

Nobody is criticizing them for being angry in their grief or for having ill feelings. They are criticizing them for behaving terribly and dishonoring their son by attacking their friends. This is not the first drowned teenager at the barrier islands. But this is the first one where the parents jumped out of the gate and accused friends of deleting stuff off the deceased's phone. They are not reverse racist monsters. They are behaving horribly and being racist. Who knows how out of character that is for them other than the people that knew them closely before.

I literally said in the post your are responding to that I can't say what their character is, I can only say how they are behaving.

They are behaving horribly and being racist. Who knows how out of character that is for them other than the people that knew them closely before.

And this is all assuming they are not withholding their reasons for suspecting his friends. If there is some actual evidence implicating them that they are not sharing publicly, then things are different. I am not repeating that disclaimer in every post, but it applies to all of it. My guess has been they are not withholding the reasons they suspect the friends because they have given bad reasons (he didn't have his phone with him in salt water, other kids didn't know where his keys were and had to call somebody to find out where they are, he didn't have any snaps on his phone, etc.) so I assume they are not playing 3 dimensional chess and withholding info so they can spring it on them later.
