Why? Up until recently, IU did not sell out their games. Purdue, Northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, MInnesota, UCLA, Michigan State....they don't sell out their games.First you have to sell out games.
UNC, NC St, and VT aren’t exactly football success stories. I’m not sure how they move the needle much beyond a name on paper.Academics Football and Research not to mention international pursuits and involvements (namely Europe) certain universities have?
UNC has done nothing in football up to this point. Their academic prestige may be there, but was also tainted by the discovery of fake classes for athletes years ago. Also, I told you guys several years ago that the XM college football guys began discussing the realignment of the B1G and SEC expansions will eventually lead to an NFL like playoff system. They started reporting this back when it was announced that USC was leaving for the B1G. This isn’t new news, it’s been the goal from the higher ups all along. All of that and more, but starting with the academic prestige of UNC nationally and globally, which is why B1G presidents were highly supportive of adding UNC a few years ago in the the previous round of expansion. Both schools are considered to have underdeveloped football programs that will benefit from SEC or B1G money. The state continues to grow in population and both conferences would love to add that market. FYI - I learned in the past that PSU4U is an actual insider on this topic and was very accurate on conference expansion on the old forum. I always defer to his knowledge on this topic.
And UVa not Virginia Tech is the bigger prize in VirginiaUNC, NC St, and VT aren’t exactly football success stories. I’m not sure how they move the needle much beyond a name on paper.
I would agree on academics, but again, the football team is largely an afterthought at UVa behind bball, baseball, and lacrosse. Although, those UVa sports would drastically improve the reputation of the B1G.And UVa not Virginia Tech is the bigger prize in Virginia
The posters who are advocating to add Pitt have obviously never attended a PSU-Pitt game in Pittsburgh.I would agree on academics, but again, the football team is largely an afterthought at UVa behind bball, baseball, and lacrosse. I understand what you're saying but, JMO, I believe "football prestige" is way overrated in these decisions. I'm not convinced Clemson doesn't get left out.I would agree on academics, but again, the football team is largely an afterthought at UVa behind bball, baseball, and lacrosse. The sheep in the nearby University Farms pasture were really nervous about the Pitt fans. ;-)The worst animalistic behavior ever.
Not sure how credible this is, but it is interesting…
They have a short YouTube clip on the discussion. Again, I have no idea how credible they are. It popped up in my X feed. It's a subscription site
UNC and NCS are tied together at the hip politically and honestly have little control over that situation.UNC, NC St, and VT aren’t exactly football success stories. I’m not sure how they move the needle much beyond a name on paper.
Has USF come up in recent conversations as a plan C to get into the state of Florida and that huge market? I know they obviously do not move the needle in any sport, but they are a very large school that is an AAU member. Isn’t AAU status still a requirement for the Conference?UNC and NCS are tied together at the hip politically and honestly have little control over that situation.
The SEC taking NCS is a political reality. VT and VA (also have political ramifications) is a move to help get VA and completely shut the Big 10 out of VA. VT is on the Big 10 list of schools they have interest in and might try to take them if other offers fall apart.
States the Big 10 really want to be in for varying reasons are VA NC GA and FL.
While people continue to point to football prowess it has never been all about football, see MD and RU. For instance, the Big 10 has serious interest in Duke who in football doesn't move the needle either. The presidents still vote and have their own interests and agendas.
In ACC country one of two things will take place between the Big 10 and the SEC, either it's going to be a Battle Royal for schools, or they will work out an unwritten agreement as to who gets certain schools then maybe do battle over certain schools such as a UNC and a Miami.
I think the SEC and ESPN have the ability to shut the Big 10 out of the BIGs most desired teams but maybe not the financial appetite to do so.
I think the BIG 10 schools that will control this next expansion for the BIG are PS MD RU OSU MSU MI and WI. WI because they always do what MI wants because WI has always been MI's little Toady. Those schools seem to be all in on VA DUKE UNC GT and Miami. It seems PS MD RU OSU and MI would also vote for sPitt should the BIG 10 offer.
The Big Scoop as some are calling the next expansion, my question is will there actually be a Big Scoop? It seems more likely today. I just don't know how any conference could integrate 4-6 or even 8 schools at the same time. IMO that would be an administrative nightmare.

All true but if the SEC/Big Ten break away (which seems inevitable) then they're negotating based on games more than markets. If CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX all want 3 games while needing 8 for ESPN/ESPN2 and 4 for FS1--that's 24 games--you need about 56 teams to make that happen with bye weeks. We're going to see NFL like money spent by the networksThanks for the info. Very informative. I realize it isn’t all about football. Let’s be realistic, it’s about money. Everything is about money. Guess what sport generates the most money, especially in the B1G? Football. So, in a round about way, the administrators at these “prestigious”’schools like Duke, UVa, UNC, GT, etc can talk about the academics, research, etc all they want, but money will win out in the decision from both sides of the negotiations
Penn St-Pitt should be the final regular season game of the year, on rivalry weekend, every year. If Pitt would end up being admitted to the B1G, they should be the one team that shouldn’t rotate off the PSU schedule like the Michigan-Ohio St agreement with the conference.
Boise would be more significantTaking Pitt would be like taking Boise.
I also heard from the basketball guys that Duke is the big fish in the expansion. Like you said there are not much in football but bringing them in for basketball as well as some other girls sports would be worth more than any of the other football related schools could bring.UNC and NCS are tied together at the hip politically and honestly have little control over that situation.

I can’t see women’s sports being a draw in these mega conferences. It’s all about generating more income to pay to players and create margin.I also heard from the basketball guys that Duke is the big fish in the expansion. Like you said there are not much in football but bringing them in for basketball as well as some other girls sports would be worth more than any of the other football related schools could bring.
Yearly conference matchups with Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, etc., are what they are looking at

Two true declarations.Penn State isn't (1) going to play Pitt every year and (2) they're not getting into the B10
Duke basketball would be a great get for sure and a bonus. But Duke is being pursued more for their international prowess in overseas markets where they are huge compared to most universities.I also heard from the basketball guys that Duke is the big fish in the expansion. The new frontier is international markets and it's going to be enormous. That's where some of those universities are ahead of the game. We tend to see things in the here and now, but these moves are being made for 20 years down the road. Thanks for the info. Very informative. I realize it isn’t all about football. Ive heard them discussed and they are on some lists but IMO they would be a last gasp offer if a bunch of other things fell apart. I actually like them and see their potential down the road.Has USF come up in recent conversations as a plan C to get into the state of Florida and that huge market? Not sure how credible this is, but it is interesting…
Georgia Tech, Arizona and Utah all have value for us in addition to UNC and UVa. FSU, Miami and Clemson are all very overrated in terms of value IMO.Pitt has all of the downsides of UMD without any of the upside.
If Pitt were otherwise the same school, but were located in (say) Charlotte, NC then yes they might be a decent consideration for the Big Ten. I would still doubt it but they would at least be in the conversation if the Big Ten were adding another team and needed a partner to keep the league at an even number. As it is though, they bring nothing of particular value to the table that the Big Ten would want.
The only schools that are going to "move the needle" to be considered for expansion are IMHO UNC, FSU or Miami (FL) plus of course Notre Dame - or some team from the SEC that wouldn't consider it like Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia or Florida. I don't think UVA brings enough financially to the table, but they'd be a good fit. Clemson ostensibly would be a consideration but I don't think the Big Ten would consider them academically up to snuff.
Houston > TTU in terms of marketability IMO but Texas Tech, Baylor and TCU all have some logic to meTexas Tech, never see mentioned, would be an interesting consideration to break in to Texas. Has strategic initiative.to get AAU acceptance, large school, good hoops, solid football, Texas.
Thank you for all your information .Greatly appreciatedClemson and FSU seem to be a package deal to the SEC. Both met with the SEC in Birmingham AL this year. Do not know if it was the same day, I doubt it.
This next realignment seems way different from any in the past probably due to political intrusion, never a good thing.
As it stands now league expansion seem incredibly hot even to the point that several have reported that the big media outlets ESPN and CBS have been involved in discussions with some of these programs, to what extent is largely unknown to writers and the public.
Out on a limb here but I think Miami and ND could end up being travel partners to the Big 10. I also think Miami could be the first to announce to the Big 10.
Announcing and signing a contract are two different things. It seems that this time around programs could announce their intent to leave down the road in a certain year but not have signed any contracts other than maybe some sort of promissory to the conference they would be joining.
I think there would have to be some sort of legal agreement between the program and their new conference without jeopardizing their (ACC) legal arrangement with their current conference.
The only way I see a complete breakaway this year or next is if the Media companies and the conferences step up and agree to pay at least part of the fines and exit fees for these teams. I actually think that could happen in some cases such as a UNC.
Never trust ESPN they are the Media Evil Empire of college football. IMO they will attempt to have all three Florida power teams in the SEC, and they will throw the money around and make any promise to accomplish that if they can. Having said that Miami seems to have little appetite for the SEC.
