For the 70,000 or so in attendance - and everyone watching around the world - that’s exactly what you want out of a consolation game IMHO.

WOW!!!
No. These games used to be more competitive and pride was at stake. The younger generation of athletes doesn’t have the same pride. This game was an embarrassment to WC competition. But I guess Americans liked the 6-4 score, so there’s that. 😂

1000%. It may not have been traditional hard-nosed, hard-tackling, fake-diving futbol, but it was incredibly exciting, showing off the talents on two of the best, most creative teams in the world. I could've watched that all day.

Wow, shocked that you would respond that way since you positioned yourself as a purist in this thread. That was garbage from a competitive spirit standpoint.

Not only is it a god-awful idea, it has about 0% chance of ever happening. Move on.

hey, let’s put a 5-point arc in for lax!!!!
Two point is fine like they have in the pros. College will adopt it someday. Just like soccer will someday come into the new century.

None of my English friends cared other than it pissed them off for not playing that way against Argentina.
If they said that that means they have no understanding of the game. Argentina simply wouldn't allow another team to slice them up like that in an elimination game.

Not that exciting of a first half. Spain dominating possession, but hasn't had any truly great opportunities to score and Argentina hasn't been able to possess the ball in the Spain end at all. Need a goal to jumpstart this thing.

Possession was only 50-45 for spain

They definitely possessed more in the offensive side of the field.

Would like to see tv give that breakdown

Hopefully Argentina scores first. If Spain scores first, it could turn into a boring Spain defensive lockdown.

Edit: 50-45 was posted just before half

At half they said 64-36 which felt more like it.

Yes, the possession in the other team's zone was probably 80-20 for Spain, which is way more important.

Halftime show? Madonna? pretty good. BTS? pretty good. JB? Really liked him slowing it down. Shakira? Always fun. Pele followed by kids and Sesame Street characters? Certainly fun, but nothing amazing. Overall, though, nobody wowed me, so I would've rather had 10 minutes of analysis and the usual 15-minutes halftime and back to the game

Very superbowl ish. I could do without all of it but it is what it is.

For a championship game to be decided by that is insane IMO.
That's what happened in 2022 with Argentina beating France after one of the best matches ever ended tied 3-3 after OT. Killed me to see that game end on PKs. That's the 3rd time it's happened since 1982 when PKs became the means of deciding the game.

I remember I think it was 94 with Italy ending that way. I think his name was Roberto Baggio missing on a PK. He was there top player I believe. I thought the game would’ve adapted by now.

Given Spain has dominated and Argentina is down a guy id like to see Messi more involved defensively.

Him roaming around while the 9 other guys have to play D doesn’t seem right.

Truly an awful finals. 0-0 in extra. Finally 1 goal after 110 mins.

Soccer = LOL!
