We've always thought Bianco was a decent guy, right?

A kid who had been committed to him for four years was diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatments. He cut him a month and a half before school was to start. Apparently the kid was still playing at a high level, but Bianco didn't like that he would have to go to Mayo Clinic for treatment at times during the school year. The kid's brother is Calvin Harris from their national championship team.

The latest saga for Brett Harris came on Sunday, June 28, when he received a message to call Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco.

"When he got on the call, the first thing he said was, 'We have some bad news,'" Brett Harris recalls.

During that call, Brett was informed that the Rebels were rescinding his scholarship.

He had been committed to Ole Miss for four years, where his elder brother Calvin won a national championship in 2022.

"It didn't hit me fully, because I was like, 'There's no way,'" Brett said. "A month and a half before (going to college), what's a kid supposed to do? You're not giving a kid much of a chance after four years of being loyal to you ... You're not giving him much of a chance to go out and find a new school."

The news came days after Ole Miss had coaches in attendance to watch Brett play, raising a suspicion for Scott.

"It wasn't about his ability, because he's played really well," Scott said. "It was more the concern if he had to go up to Mayo Clinic and leave Ole Miss ... We want to take the high road, but we also want to say our disappointment in letting a kid know a month before a school year is going to start."

Wonder if there is more to the story.

Hard to imagine that he ends up at 17ing Iowa if he was a legit SEC player. Could have been a deal where he didn’t really develop as planned over the 4 years, and would have been your typical “one year and process them” route anyway.

All that said, tough situation. Pulling for the kid to succeed after everything he’s been through.

Looks like he already signed with Iowa, what a downgrade for him though I'm not sure there's a plethora of top programs with spots open in late June.

Everybody has spots now all the time….they’ve scrapped all the hard scholarship / roster limits, etc. The scholarship is no longer really even needed at the highest levels now with all the rev share and NIL money.

Bottom line is that he’d 100% have a spot at Arkansas, UGA, MSU, LSU, Tennessee, etc. if this was only a “Bianco being an asśhole” problem.

There's a roster limit of 34 so if your team is at 34 to add this guy you'd have to cut someone else, so yeah, if he was good enough #34 on any of the top rosters would be sent packing.

Kinda crappy but this is big boy ball these days. "Decent guys" get eaten alive. At least he called him and told him first hand.
I've been around youth baseball throughout my son's life, but he and his buddies are college freshmen/sophomores now and the step into this world has been an education for me.

This same thing, minus the cancer, happened to a guy my son grew up with -- he was cut by a well-known program after having been committed to it for years. I was outraged but all the guys more familiar with it, including the guy it happened to, took it in stride as it happens all the time apparently.

Big boy ball is right for sure.

Which well-known program?

I have to wonder if there’s any truth to this narrative that it had to do with his cancer treatments. They knew he was dealing with cancer when this got tweeted…

I feel like it was probably just a numbers issue, but who knows.

The timing of it all seems pretty awful.

It happens all the time, and always has. I remember back in the 90s a woman I knew had a son playing at South Pike (back when they used to be real good). She was talking about all the schools recruiting him and I just kept thinking we'll see how serious they all are.

timing was awful. But you’re right. It was a numbers issue. They’ve got 34 spots & they think they’ve got 34 better players.

You just don't cut this kid last minute after four years. He's a teen with cancer. His brother was a significant contributor. You absolutely take one guy. And in the scenario you absolutely can't, you don't cut the cancer kid a month before school starts.

We certainly have a contingent here that are going to defend the Rebs no matter what they do though. It's the strangest thing.

Well the young man plays catcher, and we know we could use help there. If he had to take time off we do have some guys on the roster to play ahead of him. Not sure of his hitting stats. Praying for this young man to kick cancer's arse and be a man we all can look up too!

We’re in the same State, bruh. This is not news worthy. Cancer aside, how many local, MS athletes have we shat on year after year? I could write a book across all sports. And we have 💩 to show for it.
Oh come on reb. Go back to Oxford you Confederate idiot. No real Dawg would defend the Oxford Rebels on this. No surprise GOAT is taking the Oxford side on this. Enough of him and you. Really, how much is enough on GOAT?

Sounds like he and his family are focused on the wrong things. My questions would be What do you think would cause tumors in his brain and what do you think would cause it to spread in such a seemingly young and healthy Caucasian male? Could it be exposure to something toxic where he lives? Maybe going to Iowa will help him get away from whatever is making him sick. I know first hand, people in Mississippi can be super stupid. Like throwing a bunch of plastic trash in a barrel and letting it stink and simmer for days.

If you were to present your case as to why you think nil, the tp & roster shaving in baseball needs to be removed use this situation. You may just win and everything goes back to what it should be.

Correct - and going from 11.7 scholarships and no pay-for-play and changing to 34 scholarships with unlimited pay for play means that nobody in the P4 is going to be lacking the ability to add a good player at any time. The 34th best player on any P4 team is going to be a 1-year scholarship player at best, if not a preferred walk-on.

It’s not going to be anyone that isn’t immediately expendable in favor of a highly coveted recruit from a Top 15 program, if said recruit is actually as advertised.
