I saw a teenager drown at Sardis once. In the swimming area with a shitload of people around. Never underestimate the power of water and the power of panic.

Was on the Destin East Pass once about 10 feet off the beach and I jumped off the front to try and pull the pontoon in closer. I thought the water was waist deep or shallow enough to touch bottom at least, but I went straight down and never touched bottom. The current immediately started pulling me out and somehow I surfaced just in time to grab the front of the pontoon. I could still feel the current trying to drag me under the boat, and it was strong. Man that was scary enough. I can't imagine being completely helpless in that situation, not being able to touch the bottom with nothing to grab on to, then you start getting muscle fatigue and can't even fight to stay above the water.

Had something similar happen to me at crab island once. Hopped off to help walk the boat in to anchor up and water was much deeper than I anticipated. I couldn’t get a hold of the boat but luckily someone on a jet ski nearby was able to scoop me up. Tide at that time was pushing me further out into the bay but I was along for the ride. I couldn’t even begin to swim fast enough to get back close to the boat.

I mean, yeah, that’s kind of a Captain Obvious statement though. A perfectly healthy 16 year old kid isn’t just walking down the street and minding his own business and then suddenly found dead on an uninhabited island that’s 8 miles from the coast of his home town without SOMEBODY’s bad judgment or malicious judgment.

Is there a truly some widespread narrative that this was some million-to-one, act of God, wrong place / wrong time sort of situations? Full disclosure - I haven’t the slightest clue what happened or even of what the speculation is. I just can’t see anyone making an argument that this was just happenstance / bad luck.
There are lots of dumb people on facebook claiming he must have been murdered because there's no way teenage boys drinking alcohol on the water could result in a drowning without a murder. Just no possible way a teenage boy drinking alcohol would follow a girl and then manage to separate himself and drown. I mean, anything is possible, but it's not typically a very murdery crowd out there. You're pretty much talking about a serial killer type person that's going to manage to kill somebody without first having an altercation that caused people to take notice.

I was at Lake Caroline the day a girl drowned there, probably more than 5 years ago. But yeah, she just fell off the boat and hit her head. Tragic.
Well I didn't even know about that one. This was a black dude. Just jumped off the boat and they said he never came up. Said he was a perfectly good swimmer and I don't think they ever figured out what happened. Really crazy because no currents or tides or anything that would explain why they couldn't find him.

I do remember a girl that I think fell out of the boat and got hit by the propeller and had her arm all chopped up? That may have been one of the other lakes in the area.

The girl was the one at lake Caroline. We saw the emergency vehicles go past from the tennis courts. Very sad. Any lake, river, or the gulf can kill you.

I’m far from a salt water expert but I know that the ocean/gulf has ways of killing you that 99% of people would never dream of. In a different but similar situation, I was white water rafting and got sucked into a hole; I had no control over what was happening to me. You get shot out of the holes almost every time but that is a helpless feeling. Big water is scary.

The ocean wants to kill you, it goes to bed at night wanting to kill you and wakes up in morning wanting to kill you.

The ocean definitely doesn’t care one way or the other, but if you’re just a little bit careless it’ll kill you quick and easy.

What is the chatter on cause of death? Did he drown and wash ashore? Overdose??Over imbibe?? Foul play?? Suicide??

I’ll be honest. I’ve never spent any time around the coastal barrier islands. When I hear Horn Island I think of Walter Anderson in his little rowboat painting animals on typing paper.

Had no idea it was party central on weekends.

Was in South Padre for the 4th.. had both my kids (7 & 5) in lifejackets when they wanted to go in the water without me. Saw 8-12 year olds out on the second sand bar with their boogie boards during a red flag... not smart at all. Went out to dive for sand dollars past the second sand bar and the cross shore current was pretty insane.. I'm very comfortable in the water, surf the texas coast, and swim for exercise and I still wore an inflatable belt pack as a precaution. Mother nature does not discrimnate. Rip currents aren't about your capability to swim.. it's about not panicking, can you just float and let it take you, then do you have the cardiovascular ability to swim back in from 50-300 yards..

First I am sorry this happened . It sounds like he was a nice young man . What I haven't seen mentioned here is that being a fit young athlete in no way means you are a good swimmer (see our own Keffer) . Drowning almost always starts with panic which is almost started by gulping water you when didn't intend to . I think this is what happened (and if he was drinking) which I do not fault cause I did it myself it just makes it worse . Just a tragedy .

Of course those white boys did it. They had it planned all along. The same white boys that were very clearly having a a lot of fun with him just hours before they killed him.
I never thought it was about race and anyone that did probably has some looking in the mirror because the idea of white and black people being friends on a boat was foreign to them. Like Goat said it was an Occam’s situation for me, with a small piece of me thinking it may be a Murdaugh like situation but the boat wasn’t wrecked so that seemed unlikely.

Go to any TV stations Facebook page in MS from Jackson south to the coast (WLBT, WAPT, WDAM, WLOX, WTOK, WJTV) and read the comments, it is all about race from one side of the equation............

The only people saying it’s about race are the ones who want it to be about race. Ask yourself what’s more likely, A.) a bunch of teenage boys got drunk on a boat while they were chasing girls and one of them got separated and drowned or B.) three dipshit high school white boys conspired to kill their black friend in broad daylight around a shitload of other people at a holiday gathering and no one at a packed beach/shore/island saw anything.

Most of what I know about this incident is from this thread. They sure are.

I learned of this on Redditt yesterday. If you want to go down a hole of terrible, it's there waiting. The sub is "blackpeopleofredditt" , lot of opinions on there about corruption. Pretty sad really.

Well, you know there is a video of them on July 4. Its very clear that there was an altercation because of the 100 or so people visible in the footage, one could be heard saying the F bomb. Thats all I need to know that they took that Ole boy out there with the express intentions of killing him.

Im really tired of seeing this sort of comment on repeat with the extras that are added to each of the comments.

And there's a Go Fund Me with over $100,000 raised toward a $120,000 goal. I get that this is sad. And I could see maybe $10,000 raised to pay for a funeral. But $120,000? How 17ing cold and greedy can you be to profit like this off of your own cousin's death?
