That is exactly what the Wall Street Journal is reporting.
It turns out there was heavy political pressure involved, from Trump.
I have been on record as saying I think Trump has often overstepped when it comes to what should be allowed by the office of the president, but this time……
All this will result in the US getting smashed tomorrow night. It would be the most Mississippi State thing ever.
Different rules back then. There was no automatic suspension for a red. Each case was reviewed individually. Most cards resulted in suspensions. I wasn’t alive then so I had to google it. That’s what I found.

I don’t doubt the rumors he called but what’s he going to do if they don’t change it?
I know he is, but what leverage could he possibly have on FIFA that would allow him to place heavy political pressure? The World Cup is the most popular sporting event in the world no matter where it is played. Nothing Trump could threaten would even be a gnat on FIFA’s arse. Him and Infantino are apparently buddies, so maybe he just called his friend up and said “how about suspending that red card, especially since it was a crap red card anyway.”

Yep. I'm not sure it should have reached that level of pressure, even though almost everybody agrees that the red card was not justified. Me, I know next to nothing about soccer, so I'll go with the majority on that opinion.
