Loved everything my mother cooked......now my MIL was another story . Woman couldn't boil water without a recipe and then it was still hit and miss .
Oh hell, my MIL came over to cook for us while wife was still at hospital with our daughter. I came home for something we forgot (left in a huge rush several weeks ahead of due date). MIL is in kitchen over a pot. Smells like ***. She says "oh, making you guys a brisket, but could not find your seasonings". I ask what was she missing because I just see black liquid in the pot. She says, "well you're didnt have any liquid smoke".

Apparently, her recipe for brisket was to boil it in enough liquid smoke to cover. I might have tried to make nice, but I know we did not eat it beyond what she saw us put directly into our .mouths.

We used to feed the dog leftovers from the table. She would eat all of Mom’s stuff, peas, beans…whatever, EXCEPT the corn bread.

Mom had fried some fish & hush puppies in a cast iron dutch oven on the back porch. She left pot of crisco on the back porch to cool down. The family beagle ate pretty much a whole can of fishy tasting crisco. His belly looked like a swole up tick. The dog laid in the shade under a tree for about 3 days before he got back to normal.

Without a doubt it was salmon croquettes. Close second. Liver and onions. When I’d walk in from practice and smelled either, I’d head to the neighbors for a bologna and cheese samich
anything with bell pepper. My dad loved it. I hate it with unbridled passion. It tastes like plastic. I like just about any pepper besides the burn your gut out with a flamethrower hot ones, but bell pepper is disgusting.

My mom was convinced seasoning chicken was one sodium crystal away from a coronary. Consequently, every piece emerged from the oven dry enough to dehydrate you and bland enough to make cardboard seem flavorful.

"Croquettes"? Oh, y'all were fancy. I got "salmon patties".
I think that’s the problem. I still love salmon patties, but you need to remove the bones and skin. Season it with some Old Bay and/or Paul Prudhomme’s Seafood Magic. Fine ground salt on the top just before serving.

I love me some gizzards, livers, and hearts. Organ meat, yuuuum.
You and my father would have enjoyed a trip to KFC back in the day. Had the "holy trinity" as I recall. He always ordered liver and onions if someone had it when we went out to eat because my mother wouldn't cook it at home (thankfully). He too was a big organ guy, loved them. He didn't pass that gene to either my sister or me.

Starkville Cafe does liver and onions on their lunch specials, usually the day I go is the day they do liver because NOBODY in my house will touch it so it's the only time I can get it

Would not eat this as a kid but Mom would occasionally take spinach out of a can ( we had all the turnip greens and collard greens out of our garden you could even want) but not spinach
She would put it in a black iron skillet and scramble an egg over in the spinach and this was a side dish that only my Dad ate and he apparently loved it.
I’ve made it as an adult maybe 3-4 times, last time just about 2 weeks ago and I have come to really like it.

Goulash. Hated it as a kid but looking at recipes just now it doesn't sound so bad - it's like hamburger helper mixed with a beef stew. It think it was the stewed tomatoes my 10 y/o palate couldn't handle.

I guess I can't commiserate with you guys on this one because my mom was an amazing cook. I still cook salmon patties to this day because of how good she made them. Lots of other things I try to copy of hers as well.
Guys, next week will be 15 years since I lost my mom. If you still have her, treasure her..Even if she doesn't cook well..

We ate whatever was put in front of us. Nothing was 'worst' or 'best'. It was food for which my parents worked hard.
