Looks like we have another Gamestop brewing with the Reddit degenerates.

WEN (Wendy's) in a short squeeze. Up over 30% in 2 days and up another 12% in pre-market.

Wendy's used to be by far the best of the big 3 or whatever fast foo burger joints. The last few times I've had it - probably a half dozen in the last 5 years - it's just been sad. Their chicken sandwich (not the cheap one, the good one) was legit good, and they offered spicy way before anybody else. It's just a turd now. Andthe hell are those nuggs even made of?

Also, we went from the Super Bar and the sunroom to this. I've seen prisons that were a more welcoming space; all it needed was someone yelling NO TOUCHING.

Apologies for the hijack, I don't know a damned thing about their stock price. I hope all sixpackers make a killin' on it.

To be fair, which fast food joint today is as good as it was 15-20 years ago? I can't think of any. We already went over Pizza Hut. Even Chik has gone down some.

I saw a thread on Reddit a couple days ago about the Wendys push. I figured it was just shittalking and BS. Interesting to see at least some people are actually doing it.

I think McDonald’s is better than it was 15 years ago. Not the prices, but the quality of the sandwich assembly is greatly improved.
This is true. I didn't eat McDonalds from the early 2000's to 2020. They heard the complaints and improved food quality and made changes.

Truthfully I started eating them because my kids love happy meals, the greatest marketing tool in restaurant history. But the food is 100% better than it had gotten in the early 2000's.

Wendy’s service quality is awful… I refuse to go there

McDonald’s isn't bad, but I don’t go there as often as before

Taco Bell is surprisingly good

Chick-fil-a needs to get rid of its drive-thrus because the lines are so long that they are safety hazards on streets

In the Memphis area, Wendy's is definitely hiring the very bottom of the fast food hiring pool barrel. It's worse than Popeye's. Sad bc I could crush a double or a 3 piece dark for lunch today. But I wouldn't get it even if I tried.

Unfortunately while what you say may be true, they remodeled all of their restaurants to look like doctor's office waiting rooms, removed drink machines, and you walk in and don't see an employee. If they'd bring back some 1980's McDonalds ambiance, it would go a long way.

I've probably eaten there twice in the last five years and the last time was probably a year ago at this point, so this may not be representative, but the food was still better than McDonald's (which granted, I've probably eaten there only a few times more over the same period). I assume it's just the same thing hitting pretty much all the fast food places. Hard to keep prices low enough to offer a good value compared to better, more specialized fast or fast'ish food (e.g., Five Guys, Chipotle, Chik Fila, cane's, zaxby's, etc) while also offering decent food. Their value menus are I think practically loss leaders for them and also generally not good or small portions, but if you leave the value menu you might as well go to a decent place to eat.

I'm not doubting you are correct in your area. But in every case, this is 100% dependent on the franchisee, his hiring practices, and the attention (or lack thereof) he gives to each of his stores.

*Other than Jesus' chicken, of course. They have traditionally always done the best job of pushing corporate policy down to the store level. But we all have to admit that even their service has dropped off lately. I will refrain from commenting on some theories I have of why that is.

Even Chik has gone down some.

I used to be spoiled in new braunfels. The only chik fila there (yes, only at the time) located on 35 and not far from schlitterbahn was a well oiled machine. They were used to bus loads country rushing them. I could go in there and order lunch for the entire plant (35 people), they would not blink at the order and 10 minutes later, im walking out with everything I need, hot and fresh.

Then....something happened. Probably the death of Cathy. CFA started making an effort to hire folks that actually do not fit their normal employee mold. Courtesy and other things pivoted.

We have since moved and around here, I wont bother with them. The few times I went around here, felt closer to a waffle house dining experience (sans good cooking).

Culvers is probably the one with the least dropoff.

I ate at a Burger King in I think Brookhaven? Maybe McComb? And it was the cleanest and nicest fast food place I've been in in years. Food was good and service was great. I actually like Burger King's breakfast, but the rare times I actually go to a burger king to get it they always seem like the most run down and understaffed stores.

I don't think it's so much about them pushing corporate policy down as it is basically requiring owners to work the stores. I'm also unaware that their service has dropped. I don't go there because even knowing the line will be incredibly quick, I just can't make myself wait in a line like that. But would be interested in knowing what has changed.

I don't eat at chikfila a lot - which will SHOCK some of you - but probably average 2-3 times a year. The quality dropoff on the chicken sandwich is impossible not to ignore. And the wait time is more in line with what you used to see at any other fast food joint years ago. That kale salad isn't bad at all but they're sure proud of it.

CFA has by far the best points system for getting free food. Taco Bell has a good one too. McDonald’s and Wendy’s are more restrictive on what you can use your points on.

Best way to get CFA and Taco Bell is order on the app and it’s ready when you get there.

Great example. The Burger Kings around Ridgeland/Madison/Gluckstadt are (or were, some have closed down) some of the worst-run restaurants I've ever seen. But even that old and tired brand can still have clean and well-run stores.

That's part of what I meant by 'pushing policy down' to the store levels. A lot of franchises will take almost any applicant who can write the check, train said new franchisee for a few days, give them marketing materials and the menu, then tip their hats and say "good luck".

The system CFA has in place - where the owner of any given store is a partner with corporate, and that owner has been thoroughly trained and actually cares and has to maintain really tight oversight in his stores - is the best there is. Some others are going to similar models now to try to up their service and hopefully to gain a loyal following like CFA, to varying degrees of success. But you almost have to have a cultlike devotion to that atmosphere at the corporate level to spread it out as successfully as they have.

Truett Cathy died and took some of that devotion with him. Dan did a good job of maintaining it. And as a lot of companies find out in the third generation, I'm not sure the grandson in charge now has as much of that as his father or especially grandfather did, and I think you can tell. My interpretation is that it's all about corporate growth for him.

Service is down. They don't all love their jobs as much as they used to. Food orders gotten wrong, which has happened multiple times to me. Hell I've been to both Madison and Ridgeland stores lately and didn't get a "My pleasure". It's happened twice in the past month. Not the end of the world (maybe), but it's certainly a noticeable change.

The quality of the beef is still far and way better than any of the other major chains, but you are right on that its not like it used to be. Wendy's french fries used to be the best as well, but they changed something with that too. I am always amazed when restaurants seem to take something that is great and tweak it into something that is subpar.

Given that I can hit a better quality establishment for roughly the same food cost as fast food, I never go fast food unless I'm just in real hurry and don't have quick access to nabs.

If you ever grabbed a tong-ful of salad from that thing only to see another clump of salad hanging about 8 inches below what you grabbed via a string of hair, you no longer wanted this. Happened in Starkville circa 1991. Caused me to give serious consideration to all salad bars, the reason they have sneeze "guards", etc. Haven't done a salad bar since.

Burger King and Popeyes in Madison have something in common. About every 5-7 years I forget how bad the service is and make the mistake of going in.

Yup. For me it's always either I'm on the road, or I have to get something for kids immediately and quickly, or sometimes if I'm hungover. I will say that I've had Culver's once and I thought that was worth eating. Would put it more on par with five guys than fast typical fast food.

A lot of times with fast food restaurants, I have to debate with myself about whether they truly declined or else I just enjoyed greasy, crappy food a lot more as I kid than I do now. You’re spot on with Wendy’s though.

They had the OG gourmet fried chicken sandwich as far as I’m concerned, and man was it good back in the day. Then you throw in their 99 cent menu, chili, what I thought were delicious fries, and a cold frostee? That was some good eatin’ that even the adults didn’t mind most of the time. They have gone severely downhill, and I don’t know when all these fast foods execs decided that we wanted a more “cafe” experience, but it sucks.

I think the food is about the same quality across the board. What has dropped off tremendously is staffing ie service and value. Taco Bell has always sucked quality wise, but when you could get a Mexican pizza, a supreme burrito, & 2 tacos for $5 is was great. Now that’s like $20. A jr bacon cheeseburger has never been a good burger but the value prop at .99 was awesome.
