Need some help from my fellow Husker fans. I am taking a family vacation with 2 adult sons and their families. Looking for a lake front airbnb where there are activities for children ages 14 to 8. Couple of ideas that I came up with is Lake of the Ozarks and Lake Lanier outside of Atlanta. Black Hills is an option for the different activities, nothing on a lake for a home but beautiful mountain setting and not easily accessible for one family to fly into.

Give me your idea's. I want to stay within the US. TIA

Lanier is good, plus you have all the ATL to have fun and do something if you're trying to find activities. The Georgia Aquarium is pretty cool. The new (few years old now) Braves stadium is really nice and the area around it has A LOT to do. If you're into baseball, it is an amazing atmosphere and for families as well.

There is also Lake Hartwell, which is north of ATL right on the GA/SC border. That's the lake I visit frequently. As for other activities, you'd probably have to travel a little more than Lanier but Greenville isn't far which has a lot. Anderson is right there and has a few things to do.

Thanks for the input. We do enjoy baseball, with our favorite teams the Dodgers, Guardians, Tigers and Mariners, maybe the Braves will be playing one of them LOL

Dodgers fan here. See them every year when they come to ATL. They’ll be in town towards the end of August this season.

Does Okoboji still have Arnolds Park? That's a nice lake with a smaller amusement park and tons of restaurants to go to... and there's a water park up there I believe

***Edit I just looked... they've really grown up there! https://vacationokoboji.com/

By the way, the Ozarks are great if you are going there with your friends and are looking to boat/party and look at boobs.

It will be VERY awkward when you get by party cove and your wife, daughters and grandkids see the hot girls flashing all the boats.

Didn't read whole thread so apologize in advance if already mentioned, but The Wisky Dells are a wonderful place to take the whole clan.

So is the requirement needing to include a major airport for some of your family? If so some of the suggestions aren’t viable. I’d also like to know if it’s for this summer since options for both Airbnb and VRBO are likely limited.

Not necessarily by a major airport....summer/fall trip but would be best if the grandkids were not in school.

Fully aware of those concerns. Guessing not much of that going on during the week.

I’m a real sucker for Branson as a Midwest place to go for a long weekend.

Table rock lake is a lot more chill than lake of the Ozarks. You can rent all kinds of boats and get out on the water. It doesn’t have the drunken jackassery that the Ozarks is known for either. There are places you can pull off and jump from the rocks into the water about 15 feet below. They also have a show boat with dinner and music and comedy

Branson has Silverdollar city which has been ranked as the best theme park in the US for several years running . The kids will love that. They’ve got about five roller coasters that are just fantastic.

The kids would enjoy the strip because there’s all kinds of things to do like go karts and adventure and theme attractions designed for them. I don’t like the strip too much because of how busy and commercial it is, but their evening shows are top-notch. I’d recommend seeing the Haygoods. If your religious at all, there is the site and sound theater, which is amazing. Love that place. It’s Broadway quality theater.

I also like touring the college of the Ozarks. They have several small museums on campus depicting what life was like in the late 1800s in early 1900s. That’s entirely free.

There are no shortage of good restaurants in the Branson area.

The area doesn’t have casinos, which is downfall to many people, but not me.

The scenery is really nice. You can drive an hour south to see some of the beautiful parts of Northern Arkansas too, as well as the Ozark mountains that surround the lake.

The prices for everything in Branson are pretty decent too. If you need groceries for your cabin, there are several grocery stores and a Walmart nearby.

These vacations are always more fun in your mind.
This is true. Nothing quite as good as shelling out a bunch of money while your kids complain and find fault with everything. WE’RE HERE TO MAKE FAMILY MEMORIES!!!! deep down. I think they’re enjoying themselves, though, at least I hope so.

I am going to put a plug in for my area. Lake Chelan, Washington. Hot days with no humidity. Cooler nights. Water is so clear you can see the bottom in 50 feet of water, but it is cold. Not too cold to swim. Comes right off the mountain snow. The lake is about 55 miles long and very deep. Take the Lady of the Lake excursion boat all the way to the headwaters at Stehekin. From there you can hike into the North Cascades or stop off on the way up for great hiking at places like Lucerne, Domke Falls and former mining community now owned by the Lutheran Church, Holden Village. The lake can be pretty good kokanee fishing. Good golf courses and if you like wine there are over 40 wineries. Lots of fruit orchards too. Rodeos and Old West things to do.

I need a vacation from my trip to Cary, North Carolina I made this week. To appease my wife, who is the nicest and kindest person I know, I went back for her mother's 90th birthday party. I did get to spend one day with an old co-worker. That was fun. As far as my mother-in-law goes. Well, the older she gets the more difficult she becomes.

If any of the ‘ must haves’ are being covered with a Branson/Table Rock Lake recommendations then IMO it should be high on your list. My family has been twice in the last 6 years and had a blast both times. We didn’t do a VRBO/Arbnb by definition, found a mom and pop property that had cabins with kitchenette. Saves us tons eating breakfast and some dinners on the property. Silver Dollar City is big enough to visit 2 days plus they have a partner water park that is a full day visit as well. Get a cabana, you won’t regret it. We never did a show in town but there are certainly many options if interested. Happy trails!

Great recommendation. I’ve been to at least 40 states but have never gone as far Northwest as Washington. It has a lot to offer, well, maybe not Seattle any longer. The wife and I are now empty nesters, so it’s time for us to get out and see more of this great country.

Stay at Indian Point in the Ozarks. There are a couple resorts there reasonably priced, higher end options & airbnbs, or camping. You've got a marina on Table Rock Lake with boat rentals, Silver Dollar City is one of the best theme parks in the nation, and you are about 15 miles outside of Branson with tons to do for kids and adults.

In my experiences, if there is a pool at the hotel, they enjoy themselves!

If not, it’s questionable at best.

My kids, the wife, hell even the dreaded in-laws (went with once, ugh) all complain that my vacations are too intense and they just want to sleep in and lay by the pool. 5 years later everyone is sitting around talking about how much fun they had and everything they did. In-laws even asked to go again.

I have tried to cut down on the Clark Griswald style minute by minute itinerary. Friends at work joked I was giving my family bladder infections by refusing to stop and let them pee off script.

There is this term "fauxstalgia". It is sort of a fake-term but it is basically the fear of missing out of something you never lived through but it applies to things like you mentioned as well.

They hated it at the time (rightfully so) but years later, even the parts they hated become fun memories.

It is like dudes that think about how great basic training was...20 years later. Or women talking about the joy of child birth...when their kids are all grown up.

Me and a big group of friends went to the NU vs Michigan game, Frost's first year. Where NU lost like 50-7 or something. It was horrible, the game sucked, the tailgating sucked, the bars sucked, the drive sucked.

Yet, all these years later we still talk about how bad it was but how we still had fun.

I think that mostly applies to detasseling. Every year I crunched the math and was like, nope, not doing that nonsense again for like $2/hour, working in an irrigated corn field in 95 degree heat. Then summer rolls around I was like, nah, it wasn’t that bad. Sign up again and in the middle I'm like, damn I'm an idiot.

Also, what I imagine every girl thinks about before having sex with me the second time.
