How hard can it possibly be to make it as successful football coach? Recruit talent, instill discipline and let them play the game.
A lot of very good coaches recruit talent, instill discipline and let them play the game, but still don’t win big consistently. It’s a zero sum game.

First of all, I hope that Beamer succeeds. I'm at the age where I know I'm getting close to taking the exit ramp in this road trip called "life on earth". Thus, I don't want to start over. For Beamer to pretty much guarantee that we'd make the playoffs this coming season tells me all I need to know.

If Beamer fails, I'd look at what Donati did at TCU when he let go the legendary Gary Patterson. He hired a mature, experienced proven Head Coach who was familiar with the recruiting territory there. Who would fill that criteria? Tyson Helton of Western Kentucky. In 7 years there, he has won a couple of division championships. Against Conference USA opponents who supposedly had similar resources, he has won 73% of his games. In his time there, his teams beat Arkansas, lost to Indiana by 2 and 3 points, lost to Boston College by 1 and last year lost to LSU by 3 at Death Valley. So, he seems to have the coaching chops. If we have an opening, I'd back up a Brinks truck to bring him to Columbia. But, that's me, as I know little and claim less.

If you want someone close to 60 ala Holtz and Spurrier: what's Mike Gundy up to these days?

I don't know, but word on the street is that he's a man.

And has been since he was 40.

Unless it’s a home run hire like Urban Meyer or Nick Saban, I don’t see the logic in rebuilding the whole program and firing Beamer. He’s recruited well, culture is good, big wins and a few good seasons. Bringing in a comparable hc would mean growing pains and, at best, similar results. If the football team goes 3-9 or something, then you probably have to though.

A few months ago, thought Beamer said everyone would be discussing what seed they should be in CFP?
Beamer is a clown. He is Dabo without the wins. No coach with a brain would talk about how great the team was going to be "next year". Those who laud the "culture" of the program are simply buying into Beamer's cheerleader routine.

I see Kent, Towson, UK and MSSt as wins. Arkansas and UF as reasonable possibility wins and any other wins would be upsets. 6-6 looks likely, 7-5 possible. Sadly, either of those records will be good enough to keep Beamer and the fans will be talking about how 2027 is going to be "special". Unfortunately, an inexplicable loss could mean 5-7.

The gamecock battle cry of "WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR!!" will live on.

I think he needs to win at least 8 and be in contention for the playoffs going into the 2nd half of the season to be secure for another year or two.

Looking at the schedule I think there are 5 should be wins (Kent State, Towson, MSU, UK, Ark), 5 toss ups (Bama, UF, UT, Okla, Clemson), and 2 losses (TAMU, UGA) based on perceived talent on our team. So win the games youre supposed to and win more than you loose in the toss ups.

I like the guy, but another losing record will be the end of the Beamer era.
Do you really see @Bama, @UF, @OU and @clemson as tossups? Of those, maybe UF is a tossup because of a new coach, but UF has been bringing in a lot of talent.

I see 6-6 or 7-5 and the mediocrity train rolls on. Either of those records will be good enough for Beamer to keep his job.

it's a pretty simplistic game. All you have to do is recruit talent, instill discipline and let them play the game.

UF is starting over with a new coach and new starters on offense and defense. They didnt land their #1 head coach target so they settled. No telling if it ends up working out for them or not.

Bama is yet another year removed from Saban and the new coach is still turning over the roster for his type of players and are starting a new QB this year. And frankly we have gone toe to toe with them the last 2 years and probably could have gone 2-0 instead of 0-2 if we had better offensive coordinators.

OU under Venables has had 2 good years and 2 rough years. They had a really solid defense last year but nothing they do on offense is really that mind blowing. Venebles was on the hotseat going into the year last year and I think they benefitted from an easier than expected schedule down the home stretch last year. Beating Bama @ Bama was their best win all year, but most of their other ranked wins (Michigan, Mizzou, Tenn) ended up not being ranked at the end of the year.

Clemson is replacing a 3 year starter at QB and fired their OC in the off season. Clemson as a program has been trending down the last few years compared to what it was in the mid to late 2010s. The last few recruiting cycles we have been out recruiting them. I like our chances if we can get better o line play this year.

I'd say the biggest advantage we have with UF, Bama and OU is that they view us the way they view UK or MSSt, an automatic win. That gives us a chance to sneak up on them.

Clemson still wants to beat us every year. I agree they have been trending down the last few years but, we haven't exactly been ascendant.

If we're depending on sneaking up on people in order to have a winning record, we're in a world of trouble.

That has pretty much been SC football since 2013. We think of UGA, Bama, UF and UT as "rivals". The fans of UGA, Bama, UF and UT don't think about SC at all until game day.

The worst part of our SEC affiliation is that we aren't really anyone's rival in football.

Sure we are.

It's just that it varies depending on whomever else is trying to avoid the title of basement dweller in the conference at the time. 👍

I guess I don't get pumped over averted bottom-dwelling.

And you probably feel the same when Slippery Rock and IUP square off... but that doesn't mean there isn't a rivalry going on!

Go Cocks! Beat... whoever else sucks as bad as we do! 👍

Man! The gift of low expectations is how much potential upside it leaves you with! 😄

I see that as a best case scenario. This is assuming everything goes just right, and I don't see that happening.

UF is starting over with a new coach and new starters on offense and defense. And we have a new coach on offense with a whole new OL They didnt land their #1 head coach target so they settled. Ahem, this sounds unsettling familiar No telling if it ends up working out for them or not.

Bama is yet another year removed from Saban and the new coach is still turning over the roster for his type of players Which would mean he has more players to suit his style of football, not less. and are starting a new QB this year. And frankly we have gone toe to toe with them the last 2 years and probably could have gone 2-0 instead of 0-2 if we had better offensive coordinators.

OU under Venables has had 2 good years and 2 rough years. So kind of like us. They had a really solid defense last year but nothing they do on offense is really that mind blowing. Again, this sounds unsettling familiar Venebles was on the hotseat going into the year last year and I think they benefitted from an easier than expected schedule down the home stretch last year. My granddaughter is entering Wofford in the fall. It's an expensive school but sucking at football is cheaper there.

If Ray was still AD, I bet Mack Brown would be on the list if he showed any interest. And I know in all seriousness that Brown is retired and would never want to coach in the SEC anyway but I bet would Ray would give him an interview. Anyway-all hypothetical.
Ray would ask his advice, and then say.. "wait... would you want to?"

Technically, he said that when the playoff rankings come out in 2026,we plan on watching to see where we are in the rankings. He never guaranteed a playoff birth.
