The Iowa OL this fall

Probably not quite as good as the '25 group, three of whom were drafted and likely to make NFL rosters.

Returning are Jr. LT Trevor Lauck and Jr. C/RG Kade Pieper. Both will almost certainly go in the 2027 NFL draft. Kirk and Lester reportedly really like veteran Jr. Leighton Jones at LG. Oft-injured Sr. Mike Myslinski missed spring ball but could start at RG- or C if Pieper moves back to guard. Redshirt freshman Lucas Allgeyer has impressed and also may start at RG.

The starters at C and RG seem to be the question, Jr. Cael Winter could be in there as well. However it shakes out Iowa should have a good OL in 2026. A couple of slots will be decided in fall camp (August) before the starting five take the field against Northern Illinois.

Thoughts?

I think Lauck and Pieper are most certainly first and second round caliber draft picks. They're going to be the anchor on an OLine that lost a lot of experience and leadership. Wasn't it rumored that Myslinski would possibly be moved to center?

I try not to take too much stock from the Spring, so I'll be extra attentive to Kirk's answers about the Line during fall camp. But with Kirk being an Oline guru and Barnett's great track record, I think we'll be better than we hoped after losing three starters.

Exactly. Enough legit pieces that the best men will win and it will be a strong line.

I really love this line.

As always, (assuming health) they will be as good as the opportunity they are given to develop a lather and pound in the running game

Yep. Whoever gets handed the ball should have some holes, and whoever drops back to pass should have some time.

Moreso vs. most opponents, but a few will be challenging to the big hosses.

I think Dotzler will do well at RT. He was competing with Lauck for a starting job last spring, and Lauck is probably going to be a millionaire a year from now.
Yea I think dotzler will be solid. they really like Allgeyer, its Going to be hard to keep him off the field.

Solid again with a lot of talent beneath the starters waiting to get better. It’s going to be solid for a number of yers

I forgot to mention Dotzler in my original post, but think he is solid at RT. I got caught up in the C-RG question. I absolutely trust Coach Barnett to figure it out, he has some good talent to work with.

The first three Big Ten games will test this offensive line- at Michigan, Ohio State, at Washington. Their work will be in the spotlight. I think they will be good and only get better.

Myslinski at C and Pieper staying at G make the most sense to me, but if they want to move Pieper to C then they must be pretty excited about one of the younger G's. I haven't heard a lot about the Trent Wilson kid from JMU but he's been my pick to win that RG spot.

Wilson has some upside, but some developing to do.

The staff will play the best five guys, and he isn't passing Myslinski or Allgeyer.

Could pass Winter, but that still won't get him in

Myslinski cannot stay healthy, also has he actually been granted an eligibility waiver?

I think they will be pretty darn good and hopefully have 3 games to get very situated. I’m pretty confident in this group and our offensive scheme. We are SO less predictable than the old BF offense and that really helps the Oline. Solid receivers, RBs and TEs just create more that defenses have to prepare for. We were so close last year. Hope the guys finish off some of those close games.

Dotzler has been around for a while now. Couldn't win the LT job that went to Lauck. Has not been impressive to date. I'd hope someone passes him at RT just like Lauck did at LT.

It sounded like it was a true competition, though, which is a good sign. I mean, if you get beat out by a guy who’s projected to go and either the first or second round and this year’s draft that’s not necessarily an indictment on your abilities.

Jack played in all 13 games and won the Offense Next Man in Award. I think the coaches think much higher of his abilities than you. I think I'll trust them.

I hope they are right and he has a breakout year. However as a RS SR he's never broken into the starting five. I guess all teams need those guys that hang in there through their career and excel as the next man in. Props to him and here's hoping he has a great year.

I think it'll be a solid unit. However, very worried about RT.

RT, D Line and QB are the biggest weaknesses on this team.
Instead of weakness, I would say unknown. I think both of our QB's throw the ball better than Gronoski. Dotzler has a lot of experience, was playing behind Dunk. D-line has the most question marks but there is a lot of young, athletic talent.

He was behind 5 guys that will be drafted no worse than the 5th round.

If a team can truthfully call itself a developmental program it very much needs those guys. In these portal days let's not neglect the player who improves every year.

He may get his arse handed to him as a true freshman, but he can improve each year. It may not be until his fourth or fifth season but he can prove himself to be worth the time and wait. At worst you've got solid, quality depth.

Got that old crystal ball working overtime do you? Thank you for confirming he was not good enough to crack the starting lineup to date. Certainly good enough to be on scholarship and play a significant number of snaps, but not good enough to start. May actually be the same case again this year. We will see. I hope he has improved enough to start and then be the guy. Be good for the team if he has. But like I said, the best of luck to him. I hope he's all B10.

Who was the Iowa LB from Omaha about a dozen years ago (guessing). The poor kid couldn't catch a break, seemed to be injured every season. His fifth year he started and was excellent at ILB. May have made an NFL roster for a year or two (Buffalo?).

Those are success stories to me. I suspect some programs would have run him off (suggested he leave) but I don't think Kirk operates that way. Iowa IS a developmental program. Others claim that but you know they are fibbing.

Jeff Tarpinian. Played for the Colts for a couple years, had brain surgery and came back and played a year or two on special teams for the Texans.

CSB: one of my fraternity brothers married his sister and Jeff donated all of his old Hawkeye team shirts to me when he found out I was a fan.

Thank you! His Mom posted here, maybe on the OT board. Tarp's brother played LB at Nebraska and was deciding between the U of Chicago and Nebraska for medical school. I and a few others told her Chicago's med program had an excellent reputation and he ended up going there.

There are quite a few "good stories" (as Kirk would say) regarding guys who rarely, if ever, played until their fourth or fifth season and then provided great return on investment. They don't all make the NFL like Tarp. One of my favorites is Ramon Ochoa.

so, just to get back to the main topic if we may (because this is such an informative threat, IMO), where do we stan at right guard with Myslinski (sp?) and/or Allgeyer? It seems like Allgeyer has a lot more up side, but seems a bit too large to play guard.

I get the impression that the other four jobs are pretty much set by now.

I just want the best five, as does everyone, and am very curious as to how this is all going to play out. can't wait for August.

I don't know, but one of the beat writers speculated that the coaches may be thinking Allgeyer could play guard this season and move out to tackle the rest of his career. Of course we are speculating.

Coaches Barnett, Ferentz and Lester will be looking at these guys in fall camp. How they play "when the bullets are flying" as Hayden used to say will be seen in the first three Big Ten games.

Growth in practice, injuries, there's a lot to happen yet but Iowa has some talented options.
