Can't see what's behind the pay wall, but any talk of Lisle leaving or even fielding a team this year? Maybe Seneca and Sandwich replace Lisle and Streator.

The article mentioned the 10 team likely closed conference. It also pointed out that this would mean that Plano and Sandwich would potentially not play each other for the first time since 1939. There was no mention of any other schools joining or leaving.

Wonder how this got done? They took off 6 years ago for greener pastures. Burned a lot of bridges!
Easy Answer Easy Scheduling for AD's. They were looking for ten team conference to accompish this. Seneca was in tough spot because there were basically pushed out of the VVC by those Southern Schools. They attempted to piece together a conference but I think a few left for other options and a couple others struggled to field teams. They basically have been operating as an Independant for the last few years. They will be fine under the new playoff format. Might take some lumps in conference play but will be battled tested for the playoffs. Trap game if they limp into the playoffs at 3-6 with their offense for a 6-3 or 7-2 in round 1 for sure.

I think Seneca will be just fine in conference play. They've made the quarterfinals the last 4 years and even beat Wilmo in regular season in one of those years. They were a solid program at the end of the last millennium and they've seemed to have picked it back up to that level once again. They will be a better test for CC and Wilmo than the conference has been providing lately.

Good post... I don't know if Seneca will lose 6 games annually but it will be a tough league!

Seneca will immediately be the 3rd best program in the league although they maybe might not finish 3rd.
Wilmo is looking at a bit of a drop off the next year or two. Coal City should win the league in 2026. Manteno, Herscher and Peotone will compete.
The worst thing about closed conference is that the strong teams won’t have the ability to schedule tough non conference opponents. It hurts 4A Coal City more than it hurts 2A Wilmo or Seneca.

Not sure if closed conferences are a bad thing. My only experience in closed conferences were in the Prairie State in the 80s and early 90s. I don't think it hurt us at Kincaid nor at Williamsville, Virden, Girard and Mt Olive. Playing good conference teams will get you ready for the playoffs. As long as Wilmo and Seneca continue to run the ball they will be in every game and most likely come out with wins. It will be interesting with the new conference and I look forward to seeing how it plays out!~

What’s the rationale for a closed conference other than ease of scheduling?

with ten teams you can still split the conference into two divisions and have cross over games and still have a couple non conference games. Would think this is much preferred so teams can schedule top notch nc if they wanted to (Wilmo & coal city)
