When I wrestled in high school in the 80s, we didn’t know much about how to best cut weight. But cutting weight for me was soul crushing.

We had a guy on our team who won states and won a national tournament (like Fargo, not sure the name back then). His dad was a college coach and wouldn’t let him cut weight. He was very good. I wish I had the guts to do that, it would have improved my life so much.

Back to Ono, I really feel for a guy who cuts that kind of weight, but I just have to wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze in the long run.
My dad demanded the same. I had to cut for a Christmas tourney in middle school & by finals I got bullied by a kid from Philly. I wrestled UP weight classes for the rest of my career & some bigger older kids mat burned my face a bit. But now I’m 6’2” 250 at an advanced age and gladly appreciate my dad’s insistence!

my coach would not have been happy with that approach. he would have benched me for lack of discipline to be over that much! Regardless, i fudged my weight for practice sheets and often fought not to drink the fluid from my tooth brush.... 24 hr dry fasts? that was nothing.
LOL that's the point I wasn't over!just how he was!

we would weigh in the morning before a match and coach would get kids over out of class to lose weight!

I remember this well. Running the halls in a rubber suit while classes were going on was less than fun. I once almost got trampled when they ran a fire drill while a couple of us were out in the hall.

I have zero info but him not wrestling freestyle this year makes me think he is going next year. Seems like he’s focused on folkstyle. Flo guys said that they heard all he’s doing is wrestling folk these days. Would make sense he’s doing that for a reason
Of course there won't be any information coming... 😂 but this was the thought I had also

I went to high school in the 90's, and there were plenty of days when there was a big match and there were a few guys that didn't go to class all day. Instead they were working out, jumping rope or whatever, in order to make weight. I moved there from a school that didn't have a wrestling program. When I saw this stuff, I thought there was no way this was allowed under the rules.

I skipped school only one day in my life, and that was with my mother's permission so I could run all day to make weight. I believe that was the week I came in 18 1/2 lbs. over on Monday morning and had to get down to 136 for the Thursday afternoon weigh-in. I made weight, but my coach had one of my teammates wrestle instead since he was worried my hard cut had taken too much out of me. Those were the days! Not!!

Like I said, I didn't wrestle, so I don't everything that went on. I do remember a friend of mine came to school one day and found out that the guy at the weight below him wasn't going to be able to wrestle so he had to drop 14 pounds that day (during school) to make weight. I remember him wearing a rubber/plastic suit and working out all day in lieu of going to class. This was all at the direction of the coach.

Off topic, but . . . at my high school they had this crazy attendance policy. There were 8 periods in a day so if you checked in prior to the start of 5th period, you were only marked absent for a 1/2 day. Most of my classes were in the morning so my afternoon consisted of lunch, 2 study halls, and Calculus, which was my favorite class. I used to walk to school and would check in just as the bell was ringing to end 4th period. I missed 47 half days my senior year. The attendance person used to call my house every morning to report to my parents that I was not at school. I was the only one home, so I would answer, listen, and tell them thanks for letting me know. I am not sure if they knew it was me or not. I was told that if I missed 24 days, I wouldn't graduate, so I made sure I cut it off at 47.

I'll be that guy: I skipped zero days of high school. Might have missed a handful of classes total in 11yrs of higher education after that. Same for my (two decades) working career. Maybe I'm a square, but I've always believed my greatest skill is that I show up.

My stepfather and sister are high school teachers; they are not even allowed to consider attendance in grades in either of their school districts. IMO couldn't be a better indicator of the decline of our public education system.

I went to high school in the 1960's and the wrestling coach (of course) taught Driver's Ed and Study Hall. If you were overweight , he would get you out of class and you would run mountains (I live in WV) while the Driver's Ed. students drove behind you. He would hang his head out of the passenger window like a big old dog and bark at us if he thought we were not running fast or hard enough. Only happened to me a couple of times as I was wrestling up a class most of my matches.

So, first day of school my 11th grade year one of my friends and I had a study hall scheduled the period after lunch. We were the last ones to enter the classroom that day which was short two desks. Teacher says, "There is no room for you, go down to so-and-so's classroom for study hall." Being the sharp minds we were, we immediately head to the restroom to hang out and smoke cigarettes for the period. We continue to do that for 3/4ths of the school year until a teacher decided he had to go to the bathroom mid-period.

We were sent to the principal's office and when he asked how long we had been skipping class and I told him since day one, he blew his top to the point that he was spitting pieces of salami and lettuce from his lunch onto his desk. "I COULD THROW YOU OUT OF SCHOOL FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR!" I had to spend 3 days of in school suspension at a desk they moved into a janitors' closet in the office. It was worth it.

For the first half, before I was married and completely focused on grinding in my career; not really. I then purposely transitioned from a very public-facing role when my oldest was 5, so I don't have to travel/speak anymore and therefore have near total autonomy as to where I work. I'm "on vacation" now, we're in a VRBO with my parents at Jordanelle (state park near Park City), but I'm tying up some loose ends on a publication and another trial submission as we speak. I guess call it what you want, but if I am getting things done for the entity that pays me, regardless of where I am physically at, I consider it "showing up" in modern nomenclature.

I think ONO going for us depends a lot on the new rule... but feeling like he is too good not to.

I was at that game. Unforgettable night.
I lived in MD for several years and followed the Birds. Moved to Cleveland in 1993-94, strike shortened year. So I start following the Tribe. Cal sets the record at Camden Yards - and one/ two (?) days later they’re at Jacobs Field. The Indians have a record # of sell-outs meanwhile. Orioles come to town and Cal gets a hit, and the C-town fans give a 15 MINUTE STANDING OVATION. He rounds the bases, then the outfield and back again. Still get chills thinking about it.

I'll be in Park City in June for a fly fishing trip. Nice country.
