Momentum for a 24 team field grows....

Story from today:

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) board has voted in favor of multiple major changes to the sport, the organization announced Tuesday. They include the idea of a potential 24-team College Football Playoff and the elimination of conference championship games.

The Full Story:

When Kirk was on the show On Iowa Liveast week he said he would be good with 24 since the genie is out of the bottle.

24 teams and you are on the Big Ten or SEC. You deserve to get fired if you don’t make it about 40% of the time.

As soon as they add that will be the end of conference title games.

How will they determine a conference champion if 2 or more teams are tied after 9 conference games? Through tie breakers? Or, will we go back to co-champions, like IOWA was in 2002 and 2004?

I guess conference championships (and one champion) truly don't mean much anymore in the CFP era.

I would just do conference record and then record against common opponents.

16 is the right number but don't expand beyond that. Also given the insane differences between B1G / SEC vs all others the B1G better demand 7-8 teams every year in a 16 team format.

I find a 24 team football playoff insane but wholeheartedly endorse getting rid of conference championship games. Those games have little meaning outside of generating additional tv revenue. Football especially with all the injuries doesn't lend itself very well to all these additional games.

Big 12 is now behind a 24 team playoff.

The ACC and Big 12 want to get more teams in the playoff and the money that goes with it. That's understandale.

What isn't understandable is why we need 24 college football teams to determine who is the best in a given year.

Absolutely correct on both points made here. It really dissapoints me to see the Big Ten pushing this although it doesn't surprise me. The money gravy train won't go on forever. Then comes untangling the mess we created in the first place.

More games, more money.

It's always about the money.

UNI should get a lot of paydays. No reason for anybody to play anybody out of conference.

all you do is risk injury or a tiebreaker if you are on the bubble.

I would guess, Kirk will stick around long enough to make the 24 team field at least once.

Speaking of risking injury, lets say that either (1) OSU or Michigan already has an outright B1G title wrapped up; or (2) another B1G team has already clinched an outright B1G title.

Would this likely happen? If so, college football is looking more & more like the NFL.

Just now read this Fran. Excellent breakdown of the issues surrounding this. I just happen to live in the area these meetings take place and support the SEC commissioner all the way on this. And I agree college football has much more to lose in this than basketball does with NCAA tournament expansion.

Why the ACC Commissioner is in favor of 24 teams:

Everyone runs to their own corner.
ESPN is aligned with SEC so they follow Sankeys lead on this topic.
ESPN has exclusive rights to cfp but expansion would leave them to payout more or risk losing games to Fox or NBC.
SEC is confident that they will always do well in a 12 or 16 team selection as they control the network that controls the narrative of 12- 15 SEC schools are rated high in pre-season polls and stay up there all season by playing each other, all based on ESPN s recruiting rankings.

If this happens my ideal would be 6 auto bids for sec and BIG.

2 rounds on campus would be fun.
SEC wants to retain sec title game...it's gotta go.
Spare me osu- mich back to back.

If the BIG title is on line in The Game, you think either coach will sit players?
Ain't happening.

Have lived in the heart of SEC country going on 25 years and have always found it interesting from a college sports perspective. Just recently I spent a couple years in Gainesville. So I found our win over Florida in the NCAA tournament a special delight with Cooper Koch treating their fans to the Gator chomp šŸ˜‚

The SEC commissioner of course has the interests of his conference in mind. His opposition to the 24 team proposal represents the best interest of college football any way you look at it. The concern about the 24 team proposal starts with the diminishment of the regular season which makes college football special. The annual Ohio State-Michigan game and these big SEC matchups play a big role in that.

This push for a 24 team playoff just looks so shortsighted. It begins with a worsening economic outlook ahead which makes the financial impact of adding these extra games less rosy. Hopefully common sense will prevail.

That would never happen with those two teams. Too much bad blood.
