I read that both Steve McQueen and Warren Beatty turned down the role of Buttermaker due to other commitments. Neither would have worked imo.
In this case, Matthau > Beatty > McQueen. Beatty was the least accomplished of the three but he could play comic. McQueen fell victim of the worst trap an actor can find himself in, he started taking himself too seriously.
Jack Klugman - another Oscar Madison - could have possibly worked.
Maybe. To play that role you need to be able to play desperate. Nobody did desperate better than Matthau.

I loved when the Mexican kid said this about Kelly Leak when Buttermaker asked about him: “es un bandito”

...and the child actor that played Miguel went to school w/ another would be famous actor (name escapes me) and didn't speak Spanish. They had to teach him the lines.
Does anyone remember the line the smallest kid delivered when Buttermaker introduced Tatum O'Neil to the team?
Hard to forget Tanner's line (Timmy Lupus was smaller btw). That's part of what made the movie great - depicting the way some 11 year olds actually talked. Everyone got over it. No one died.

First PG movie I was ever allowed to see, and believe me, it took a serious effort on my part. Was rated PG for language and that was back when the f word automatically got a R rating. Hard to imagine what kids are exposed to at that same age now.
