It's his offensive ability. He can get very creative to get a shot going. He can drive to the rim and shoot the 3. His defense is still super lacking. I think JJ's mental wasn't there and was super immature. I think Rick Pitino would honestly be the right coach for him.
You just explained what I struggled to find words for. The way I've described it is Jasper has a "way of moving" on the court and you can see he does things on offense nobody else on the team could do. It's hard to explain it, but I just see his potential. I also don't think a Pope-led staff has any chance of developing a talent like that properly, so it's mutually beneficial he go elsewhere.

Interesting nonetheless.
https://www.on3.com/teams/kentucky-wildcats/news/coach-cal-makes-a-push-for-jasper-johnson/

“(Jasper Johnson’s) recruiting has taken a big turn as I am hearing (John Calipari) — who offered Jasper Johnson when he was coaching at UK — plans to meet with the guard in the next few days,” he wrote. “At least five SEC schools I know of now in pursuit of (him).”

Calipari, as you likely remember, offered Johnson out of high school and prioritized the local standout early. He told KSR at the time that the former Kentucky coach had told him his playing style was a fit after watching him multiple times in person.

At the time, he believed Jasper could be a superstar.

Wait 5 SEC schools are interested in Jasper? Interesting. To me that tells me they see his massive potential and Pope didn't know how to extract that potential and lack of discipline.
They see his massive potential that he can't dribble the ball & ***** down both legs when pressured at half court? Wow, we need those scouts to help build a team here 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You’re WRONG. 5 SEC teams are recruiting JJ.
Aberdeen is telling folks that Jasper can ball.
This board said same thing about Bryce Hopkins & Hickman & DJ & Big Z
Bryce Hopkins actually balled and was a positive impact when got playing time

This is selection bias. There were times when JJ didn't do that, had good passes, good takes to the rim and good shots. I'm sure he could beat you 1v1 with his eyes closed.

Popes best team in 12 or 13 yrs of being a college head coach was a group of 5 yr players. Granted, that team STILL lost 12 games. But they all, for the most part, had played four yrs of CBB. Point? They already knew how to play. It’s pretty obvious to anyone that pays attention, Pope doesn’t develop or cultivate. Problem is, he doesn’t recruit worth a crap either.

I don’t think you know what a selection bias is. We all watched him play and his plus/minus was shockingly bad. Kid has some serious flaws.

and any kid at the Johnson center running full court could probably beat me 1v1, so we can get that outta the way lol

This is fiction. Nobody here was bashing Hopkins. In fact, I remember the prevailing opinion being quite the opposite, we thought Cal should play him more. And I don’t recall anyone bashing Hickman either.

And those who were critical of Big Z and DJ turned out to be exactly right. They are not good. Hell, if anything, they’ve turned out to be even worse than folks here thought they’d be.

Perfect for Cal. We will never hear the end of Jasper's uncle if he goes to Arky
His uncle knows more about the ins and outs of Pope/UK than we do.

Jelly, JJ, JQ, Lowe, Chandler, Aberdeen, BG, Mo D. Either Pope picked poorly when he selected most of those guys, or he can't retain guys he actually wants to retain.

The POS practically came out and said UK fans were racist against Jasper. Sorry but the kid just sucks.

Of course he knows more. It don't change what we know. Jasper wasn't the answer this season. His uncle is talking like BBN is blaming this season on Jasper. He barely played.

You are Wrong
One can argue for his potential but this past year he was mostly not good at all. He literally just fell down trying to dribble the ball up the court against ISU’s pressure. Not slipped on a wet spot, just fell down under the pressure. Let’s not forget the Florida game where the ball was taken from him while he was attempting to call a time out. He was about as weak of a player as one can be at this stage and took many bad shots when he was on the floor. He can certainly be good with increased strength and basketball IQ but those aren’t things he had this past year so yeah he was not good.

We all know the dude is slippery. He can move and force a shot. It won't ever be successful until he learns how to dribble a basketball against a defender guarding him close. Same for Chandler

Would be a mistake for JJ to go with Cal. Cal long ago lost interest in developing guys. He wants finished products. More time for Little House reruns. Honestly Oats would probably be the perfect fit for JJ.

Johnson should look at Wagner, he was the top guard in the country and never really lived up to that at Kentucky. Everyone thought he would be a one and done and he followed Cal to Arkansas and played less there than here.In fact he may have regressed a bit under Cal, he was always steady but never got to the point we all thought he would. Cal will also recruit over him if he were to go there and with all the guards Cal always has, he wouldn’t get the playing time he wants based on what I’ve seen.

Jasper is listed as 6’4” and 180.

I think we can agree he might be 165 if that.

Guy just didn’t have the build to play with the big kids. Only chance he has is to hit the roids and pack on some fast muscle

Yeah. That’s what we heard all this past season too. Kid just isn’t very good. Loose with the ball, lacks strength, terrible shot selection, poor defender, low basketball IQ, etc.

EDIT: Not to mention, he was a year older than a normal freshman and still sucked.

He has such a long way to go, I really don't think he can get there in 4 years. I honestly think his best bet is to redshirt this coming season.

Just peaked at a 2026-27 roster thread over on hogville.net “jump ball” board.

Big Uncle may not like sentiment over there 😂. They decidedly do NOT want Cal to pursue. But it’s just us meanie UK fans…
