Interesting nonetheless.
https://www.on3.com/teams/kentucky-wildcats/news/coach-cal-makes-a-push-for-jasper-johnson/

“(Jasper Johnson’s) recruiting has taken a big turn as I am hearing (John Calipari) — who offered Jasper Johnson when he was coaching at UK — plans to meet with the guard in the next few days,” he wrote. “At least five SEC schools I know of now in pursuit of (him).”

Calipari, as you likely remember, offered Johnson out of high school and prioritized the local standout early. He told KSR at the time that the former Kentucky coach had told him his playing style was a fit after watching him multiple times in person.

At the time, he believed Jasper could be a superstar.

Wait 5 SEC schools are interested in Jasper? Interesting. To me that tells me they see his massive potential and Pope didn't know how to extract that potential and lack of discipline.

Cal wanting Jasper Johnson is just further proof that Cal no longer cares about winning a natty. He’d rather piss off UK fans than win, which is exactly how he was when he was still our coach. I hope Jasper goes there, it’ll be one less gifted and physically ready player they’ll be able to sign.

Doesn't bother me.

Scenario 1: It blows up spectacularly in Cal's face and it messes up their season (win).

Scenario 2: He turns Jasper into a major player that helps him win big (maybe they even knock out an actual rival of ours in the tournament), and it gives us another major talking point we can use in our case against Pope and the UK administration if/when our season implodes next year (win in the long run).

I really don't understand what people see in JJ. He's just not good.
It's his offensive ability. He can get very creative to get a shot going. He can drive to the rim and shoot the 3. His defense is still super lacking. I think JJ's mental wasn't there and was super immature. I think Rick Pitino would honestly be the right coach for him.

Nothing matters for him if he doesn't get physically stronger. When he faced guys with similar size, athletic ability, and length he really struggled. He often settled for shots despite having a quick first step because that's not enough to get by physical SEC guards. He has a nice shooting stroke. Most of the holes in his game can be addressed just by getting physically stronger.... a lot stronger.

I have no ill will towards JJ. It obviously wasn’t going to work here. I honestly don’t see this huge potential some of you guys talk about. However, if it works out for him, I’ll be happy for him.

From where I'm sitting JJ's fine at certain things and should be better as a sophomore. But it would be an unusual system that could take advantage of his strengths and not get burned too bad by his weaknesses.

Strength and coach the Harden step back/side out. He can score. Needs coaching badly though.

Would like to trade him for Knox.

Anyone think Cal is recruiting JJ to be a starter? Cal is probably telling him that Dilly and Shep came off the bench for Cal and went to the NBA. “I can’t hide you.”

“inconsistent playing time overlapped with inconsistent production”

Is that how it works? Overlapped? As if there was no causal connection. Playing time is usually earned. JJ did not earn playing time and we all witnessed why that was the case.

As for Larry Vaught, you won’t get anything objective from that a$$ kisser.

You’re WRONG. 5 SEC teams are recruiting JJ.
Aberdeen is telling folks that Jasper can ball.
This board said same thing about Bryce Hopkins & Hickman & DJ & Big Z

Perry was a very serviceable guard this year & Ky could have used him after Lowe got hurt.

Nobody said Hopkins couldn't ball

Dude IDC who is recruiting him
I'm smart enough about basketball I don't rely on who says what. The kid is lazy or he wouldn't be so weak at 20 years old and be a much better ball handler. That's all effort.
