So, this past year, PSU brought in essentially an entirely new squad (only DIllione, Rice, and Stewart returned from the 2025 squad - and all of them were first year players in 2025)

Now, the very next year, the roster almost completely vanishes again - who's left? Some first year guys from 2026: Juric - and maybe Ciani, Mirtic, and Grodin (but I guess time will tell on even them).

How typical is this level of turnover in current college BB? I really don't know.

I do know it is rather silly to even refer to these as the PENN STATE basketball team (or the University X team, if this is now normal around the country)

It's just a bunch of guys being paid some short term money to put on a blue (or whatever color) jersey.

What's the point? (Aside from, usually, the school being able to make a few bucks... PSU excepted, at least for the time being). No one is coming in for, or leaving with, a meaningful education. These folks in no way are "representatives of" or part of the fabric of the university.
Is it all a "life support system" for gambling businesses? To give them a tool to separate bettors from their money once football season is over? (Maybe that's it?)
Is it just a "content" vehicle for the ESPNs of the world?

It certainly isn't "the point" regarding anything that "college" sports were supposedly all about.

And, yes, one can say the same for "college" football (though, from what I can see, college BB is even more extreme)
Unfortunately, it is exceptionally typical these days. I I’ve not coached high school basketball for a couple years, but still do some scouting and help out at some of my fellow coaches practices occasionally. Most of these kids who are getting recruited at any level of division one are only thinking about next year. There’s not any inkling of staying at the school. They’re being recruited and attending as a freshman with no interest in staying longer than that first year.

Division two kids think that they’re gonna go in as freshman at a school like IUP and have a good year and be able to get picked up by D1 schools. Kids that go to schools like Towson or Mount St. Mary’s here in Maryland are hoping to have a good first or maybe by the time they’re sophomores be the guy on the team and then jump from there to a power five school.
There is definitely no more recruiting a kid out of high school to stay in your program for years.

Basketball is worse than football in my opinion but both sports do not resemble what the college sports landscape was even 5 years ago.

Michigan had all portal transfers this year. It seems that the better teams can keep the returning players who were starters and/or who got a good amount of playing time but there are no guarantees. For example, I think all the starters for Duke who have eligibility are staying except Cam Boozer who is off to the NBA.

I agree with your point that a lot of these basketball players are one year rentals. It is not college but a minor league professional team to them. I guess they have to take classes but how many are they required to take? They take some on the Fall semester then they can take some in the winter/spring semester but just drop out when they portal so how much effort do they even need to extend for that?

For Penn State football I still am a big fan but you can't track guys from being freshman to moving into starting roles like the old days. Much harder to keep track of who is on the roster.

What is the status of limiting these portal transfers to possibly only one in a career? There needs to be limits so there is not this ridiculous free for all roster flipping every season.

I think there is a realistic chance that Rodgers will end up having two years left…then again, in this environment, it doesn’t mean he’d use it here.

Is he going to start? How many starting PG in the B10 is he better than?
I would assume so, and he’d probably get 30+ minutes a game. The next step would be to find a couple guys who could actually score from the wing, whether it be from three point shooting or getting to the basket. That was a significant part of Penn State’s problems last year, that our 2/3 aren’t consistent enough shooters and couldn’t get to the basket.

Concerns me that he is coming from one of the lower rated conferences in the country. Pretty big jump from NEC to BigTen.
If he was 6 foot instead of 63 and if he was 19 instead of 23 it might bother me, but this guy‘s been around a while and if he wasn’t injured the two years prior to this one, he probably already would’ve been playing at at least one of the top mid major conferences

I believe this kid also visited today
He did, and he’d be a really good get. Westry is still the one I want most, but his skillset is similar to Rodgers so a bit of an overlap (plus I’d still love Mingo back, which is another similar one, but won’t hold my breath).

I believe they also had one of their large donors there today trying to get some more NIL money. 3 million is last in the conference and it’s rumored Rhoades even had to pay Mingo money out of his own pocket last year to cover what was guaranteed.

To get any of the guys you’ve mentioned and this one, along with at least two more to fill out the roster they’re going to have to get up over four and closer to five.
