Not that Shapiro wants or needs my advice, but if I were him, I would transfer somewhere that will let me redshirt, get my body and head right, and give it one more shot. The kid has way too much talent to have not even made a finals through three seasons. I think you will see a different Kasak after taking a year off. Shapiro needs to do the same. If I were a big-time recruit, there’s no way I would trust my future to the Cornell coaches right now.

Imagine four years ago someone would’ve told you that Shapiro, Feldman, and Keuter would have no finals appearances through the 2026 season. Nobody would’ve believed you.

Say what you want about Cael (and now DT), but when they get a big recruit, they usually hit on it. Very few misses compared to the other big 4 to 5 schools.

He should be able to get a medical RS for 2025 if he wants it. He never wrestled after the live wrestle off with Kasak at Black Knight, and I recall Cael saying he was injured at one point during the season, so I think it's likely he could get one more year. I doubt there will be a spot in DT's lineup for him at that point so he would have to transfer somewhere for what would be his 7th year in college, so I think there's a good chance he just moves on, unless he's really interested in a grad degree at Michigan or something like that.

Teasdale for one is someone with a higher pedigree who accomplished less. I'm sure there are some other examples as well. He re hasn't lived up to the expectations from recruiting, but it's not like he's been terrible.e w
Teasdale situation started to come undone his Senior year in highschool when he was having trouble with weight cut. Rumors that he started to rely alternative weight loss methods

This seems very odd to me unless he already has his degree. Why forego a degree from Cornell and leave your senior year?
I very nearly went to Cornell for grad school; good thing I visited first. Liked it so much that I ended up going to a less prestigious U (with a similarly ranked program in my field) who offered a worse financial package. Within 5 minutes of stepping on campus and mingling with some of the co-eds and possible future classmates, I knew it was not the place for me. Shapiro is an a$$hole, I'm an a$$hole, maybe he fit in as well at Cornell as I knew I would and just had to get out?

He'd be a good fit at Columbia. Pritzlaff is doing great work there, and someone of Shapiro's caliber could really provide another jump in levels for them. Plus he'd still get his Ivy education, which has to be difficult to walk away from if you're so close to graduating.

No idea Grey's remaining contract length but, can anyone see Yianni or even someone like Gabe Dean to Cornell? I wouldn't be surprised.

I had my shoulder repaired 50 years ago and I still wouldn't trust it to hold up.
What is the appropriate amount of time?
I might still have eligibility left.

I'd say double what the surgeon says honestly. Athletes in general just do a terrible job of rushing back to competing. And wrestlers are the worst at jumping back into live wrestling. And not continuing PT. That's usually the biggest thing.

But yeah. He's going to have to change the way he wrestles. Torn Rotator cuff and labrum myself. Never repaired, just learned how to protect it, and use some different offense. I tell my wrestlers all the time - injuries should make you a better wrestler.

One of my OT fieldwork rotations was in an outpatient hospital. We had several total knee and hip replacement patients with an occasional shoulder replacement/repair. Having worked with each, I’d take a knee or hip surgery over a shoulder surgery any day of the week

I don’t think Gabe had a very positive experience as a coach during Covid. I think he was expected (not by Rob Koll) by the higher-ups to act as a campus monitor and enforce distance requirements.

I think that may have been a strong incentive for Max to transfer to PSU.

He'll be fine if he takes the appropriate amount of time off. That's usually the biggest issue.
Can’t disagree. I had major shoulder surgery and at about the 9 month mark I played some beach volleyball and it was back to sleepless nights. Stupid! The doc had me rest the shoulder for a few months and I then began an exercise regimen that I’ve maintained to this day. Every case is different, but, I general I’d say taking a full 18-24 months away from wrestling would be what it takes in order to come back sufficiently strong. Case in point is Anthony Cassar’s early PSU career. I remember him practicing all by himself for more than a full year on the far mat on the left side of the practice room. I thought it quite odd that a relatively low level recruit would stick hard in the room for so long with a bum shoulder. He took his time and made it back in spades.

In that case, Iowa wrestlers should be much better wrestlers!!
