He’s the kind of player who ends up being a glue guy on an NBA championship team. Hopefully a college team if he chooses Kentucky.
Yes, the "connector" archetype in NBA parlance. His statistical profile as a player is very similar to Dyson Daniels: elite wing stopper / point-of-attack defender, good rebounder and playmaker, below average shooter. His free throw rate is good and he shoots a nice clip from the line (81.5% career), and the offensive efficiency could still improve with additional development and a better role.

How do you see that? I just went to the site to research and I see nothing that would lead me to think that. (I am unfamiliar with using the site BTW.)

In fact, basically no portal players have a "Crystal ball" projection.

I don't even see any place where the site mentions the top interested teams.

Edit: I take that back. I see the site says Magoon Gwath is 100% Crystal ball for UK.

Is this something to "goon" over? IDK the player.
It’s on their main page they have a story about him replacing Oweh.

Prospect considered UK lean, Pope has Zoom call with said prospect, prospect commits elsewhere. I have absolutely 0 faith in Popes recruiting abilities. I hope he proves me wrong but this has happened way more often than it to just be a coincidence.
This is why Brooks and Hart left. They kept bringing recruits to the closing table, Pope showed up, recruits immediately noped out. It couldn’t be more clear

Yeah, Hart was an extremely well respected guy with NBA ties and AB3 was an ace recruiter for Baylor and could get guys like V.J. Edgecomb. As soon as they get to Kentucky, nothing.

That argument makes no sense. He was well revered enough to get offers to go to UK. So are you saying UK is not as prestigious as it was? If so, that says a lot about the state of the program. Also, why did you just point out Hart and not make an argument for AB3? Doesn’t fit your narrative?

For those critical of Byrd ("he doesn't score enough", "he doesn't shoot it well enough", etc...).
1) Butler was also a transfer from SD St, who only made 30% of his 3's and his best scoring year there was just 9.3ppg. Yet he was possibly our best player on a S16 team while playing injured.
2) Just because Byrd may be our 1st signee, does NOT mean he is the top priority, or even expected to start. But it's still important to get those critical role players for the 6-9 spots as well.
3) Very few players do everything well (score, shoot from outside, drive & finish, post-up score, get to FT line & make them, rebound, block shots, get steals, not TO, passes it well, defends well). Players who can do at least half of them well are good. Byrd is an elite defender who also gets steals and blocks, and shares the ball good, and makes his FTs.

yes the staff is terrible. none of these guys would get decent jobs if they left. look at chuck martin on cal's staff. unc just poached him.

you have 10M to spend on 2 studs. do you really want to spend half of it on a guy who is going to average 10ppg, shoot 40% from the floor, 30% from three.....and is cool spending his last year in college playing for providence.....

I think the kid could be a much better 3 point shooter if he would stop trying to be Steph Curry. He takes a lot of bad 3's. Better shot selection could help this kid a lot!

Yep, it's super clear b/c we as fans have all the details and transcripts from those meetings to know it's all on Pope... no other possible explanation.

I will be the first to admit the roster construction for this past season by Pope & Co. was not good, but I the first season wasn't terrible. I think last season was an over-correction to trying to be more athletic/physical/defensive-minded, and they did so at the expense of shooting and ability to create off the dribble (Jax, Brea, Oweh & Butler could do so the first season).

Like many, I think this 3rd year is make or break for Pope, so I am hoping his roster this year finds the middle ground and excels.

However, it's arrogant or ignorant or both to pretend like we know the ins and outs of when/why recruits do or don't commit.

Yeah I think Mark corrects this past season's over correction. He's learned his lesson I feel like.

I have my doubts, but I hope so... for the sake of everyone, it would be awesome if the switch flipped, and the team has a massively successful season. Then you have a coach the fanbase can get behind, and you have a coach who doesn't want to be anywhere else... win win
