I think some of the new posters are A.I.

I will say this about AI... Hopefully I'll be gone before Hal takes over, but in the meantime it's rather helpful.

If I'm looking for fixes for all the stuff I own that needs fixing, it's great. You ask it a question and it usually gets you an answer. At the very least it points you in the right direction. Better than a plain google search that provides dozens of video links and forums (many sponsored) you would have to sift through.

I say that based on some of the names that show up as new posters, look like the AI names that are picked for me when I play solitaire.

This brings to mind something that really bothers me. I play Classic Solitaire on Arkadium Games and I swear many of the top performers are artificial. I've been playing it for a longtime and there's no way people are getting the scores that I routinely see posted.

Are you seeing the same thing and are they artificial scores to your knowledge?

Or not. Had an article in a writers group newsletter recently, where the guy used AI to write an article. It did give some good info and good phrasing. However, it also had two quotes and a reference given that DID NOT EXIST. At all. That's a problem for me.

If you use AI for finding basic information, it works. Beyond that, experiences similar to yours seem to be the norm.

The way I understand it, AI can’t differentiate between good information and bad. I’m not sure how AI manages to come up with totally bogus quotes and references.

I’m glad I’m retired. I loved my job and I was damn good at it but I’m told it’s now extremely challenging to teach mathematics in the way it needs to be taught, getting students to do the necessary grunt work. A big part of becoming skilled in mathematics is developing the ability to recognize that you’ve made a mistake. I’d tell my students, “The biggest difference between you and me is that I know when I’m wrong.” With AI and whatnot, that skill seems to be becoming rare, almost extinct.

When I was teaching electronics tech. for a few years, I always believed in students using slide rules until they were proficient in those before using a calculator. You really don't know if an answer is right or wrong when using a calculator unless you've done the "grunt'" work to truly understand and expect an answer that is reasonable!

I wish you were around back then to tell this to my students. They just considered me an "old fogie" at the grand old age of 25-28.
That was the real benefit of slide rules over calculators. With slide rules you had to have a good estimate of what your answer was going to be.

Unfortunately it also makes fraudsters and scammers harder to detect.
