This is where I am at as well. This is clearly not a good thing but I don’t think it’s catastrophic. Singleton is not an elite athlete and he can’t shoot. I’m sure his shooting will improve but I don’t think it will ever get to serviceable (I could be wrong). He could be a very good defender and rebounder, which is not nothing, but I don’t see him being anywhere close to all big material. And for those saying this is sour grapes, I have thought this all season.

I mean you're basically describing Chase Audige and I would gladly take him back.

Chase Audige was an elite athlete. Singleton is no where near as athletic. He is bigger and stronger so there’s that.
He plays a different position, too, but "elite defender and decent scorer" feels like Singleton's ceiling and that's basically Audige, even if Audige was more athletic. My point is this isn't like losing Buie or Martinelli, but Singleton is still a guy that could have had a LOT of value as he developed.

Audige had a "God mode" where he would go off and score 10 pts in 2 minutes on occasion while always playing exceptional defense. He was inconsistent, but we were sure lucky to have him in 2023.

What’s sad is I know after Mart’s last game, someone said something like “Boo showed Nick how to stay and now Nick showed Singleton how to stay and that’s how you build culture”.

The reality is, what Nick actually showed is that he likely left $1M or more on the table by not playing his last season elsewhere… and what he got for it was a terrible season where they were out of NCAAT bid contention by mid December. Meanwhile, he’s going to go play G League for a couple years and then go to China and his career earnings will likely never even match what he passed up for one year of NCAA ball somewhere else. A noble decision, but a very bad business decision.

THAT is what Tre learning from Nick. If you have a chance to make a ton more money and also a chance to actually win and raise your visibility for the next level, you have to take it. That’s really bad news for next year and the next decade if there aren’t changes immediately.
Meh. Think this is a misread.

It's a disappointment to lose Tre but it's not a great loss of basketball capital if our goal is to be a tournament team. He was not on a track to be an All-Big Ten player - the league is stocked, particularly among the top six or eight teams, with players ranked higher than him either from HS or experience, He started as a freshman but he didn't wow with any particular skill and was pretty disappointing in his distance shooting. I don't think a team on which he is the best player is a tournament team in a power league. So for him to have real value, we had to either land a better HS recruit or a Buie/Barnhizer/Mart - quality player through the portal, which I just don't think is going to happen given our portal returns from the past year. I think the player he will be next year is replaceable, but I don't think he or the replacement is the key piece to getting back to the tournament.

I thought you took advantage of the half price deal on the Rock?

multiple peeps with connections to the program confirmed the $1m offer. Not enough. Rumors are $1.2-1.3 on the table already for Big 12 to schools and Tennessee. Maybe Purdue gets involved.
I’m waiting on the Premium Rant Board like Rutgers has to be announced before I commit.

Until then I shall remain a proud, yet stingy, freeloader. 🪙 🤏

Lou liked a post where I mentioned it so maybe there’s a chance 🤞

All depends on what we end up with on the roster. If we only shop on the bargin basement aisle then next year is going to be beyond bad They should change the timing on ticket renewals so people can make a better decision based on the roster each year

That is a pretty good ceiling

Oh, please... He was a True Frosh. Give him the time to develop

If I was CCC I would get the **** out of NU. Until they realize this is basically professional sports and you can’t win with a Pittsburgh Pirates salary outflow going against the likes of the LA Dodgers, you will never be a consistent winner. You think Skenes will stay with the Pirates any longer than he has too? We have to at least get to the Baltimore Orioles to make a run.

All due respect, the comparison to MLB here is nonsense. The Pittsburgh Pirates may well be poorly run but they are neither financially incapable of retaining Paul Skenes nor building a competitive roster around him.

As for Collins, he is signed through 2028 and it seems quite unlikely NU will be asking him to leave before then.

I'll stick with my prediction, which is that while he might be a good player, he will not be the best player on a team that makes the tournament.

One of the issues for Collins is that his best teams have been build around guys playing together for a while. Pretty hard when you are starting from scratch every year
